"An issue faced by many photographers using tripod-mount based straps is having to unscrew it to make way for a tripod plate. This new accessory gives users the ability to wear the camera on a shoulder strap and then transition to mounting it on a tripod without unnecessary fiddling. The Fusion Plate fits ballheads that use the Arca-Swiss standard." - Shawn Low, CNET Asia

"Add to that the fact that you can’t use a tripod with the screw-in strap plate attached and you’ll see where this new Kickstarter gadget is coming from." - Charlie Sorrel, Cult of Mac

"I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m always on the lookout for gear that can take a beating. I look for items that will take a stomping and keep on working. These kind of accessories aren’t always easy to find as there aren’t a lot of jobs that call for this level of protection. Recently, I came across a Kickstarter fundraiser for David Fliger’s “Fusion Plate,” and it seemed to be just the sort of thing I was looking for." - C.S. Muncy, hands on product review for The Photo Brigade http://thephotobrigade.com/2013/04/fusion-plate-camera-accessory-review-by-c-s-muncy/

"Do you own a camera? Do you use a sling-style shoulder strap to carry that camera instead of an old-fashioned neck strap? Are you tired of screwing on and off the attachment loop to mount your camera to a tripod? The Fusion Plate camera accessory Kickstarter project may just be your solution. What an amazing week! Introducing our first Stretch Goal!

Stretch Goal #1 - Reach $10,000
Stretch Goal #1 - Reach $10,000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A good Shoulder Strap by which to securely carry your camera, and a tripod for steading your shot are two accessories that are vital to most photographers. The problem has been that using one and then changing to the other can be a real pain.

That is until now, introducing the “FUSION PLATE”, bringing together utility, convenience, and safety. The FUSION PLATE is designed to allow the photographer to have an attachment loop for their shoulder strap yet also have a tripod mounting plate always ready to use. This all in the same device so that the photographer doesn’t have to fiddle with unscrewing his shoulder strap attachment loop to then have to screw on their tripod mounting plate and vice versa. Another benefit of the FUSION PLATE is it reduces the risk of the attachment loop unthreading and dropping your gear to the ground.

UTILITY:
The FUSION PLATE is very utilitarian because both shoulder strap attachment loop and the mounting plate are in the same device. The FUSION PLATE is an Arca-Swiss compatible plate and will work with Quick Release clamps produced by Really Right Stuff, Wimberley, Markins, AcraTech, Arca-Swiss, Kirk and others. The FUSION PLATE was designed from the ground up to provide a simple effective solution.

CONVENIENCE:
The FUSION PLATE is convenient because the photographer can switch from their shoulder strap to the tripod without any need to thread anything on or off their camera. Just flip the attachment loop down for the shoulder strap or flip it up to be concealed inside the mounting plate to put your camera onto the tripod.

SAFETY:

The FUSION PLATE is safe because the torque from the twisting and turning of the camera on the shoulder strap is not transferred directly to the screw that holds the attachment point and mounting plate on to the camera.

MY STORY:
I am a photographer and about a year and a half ago I bought a sling style shoulder strap, I liked that it allowed me to carry my camera at my side instead of around my neck. However, I quickly discovered that the screw on attachment loop interfered with my ability to utilize my tripod quick release plate. Both devices utilized the ¼”-20 accessory hole on the bottom of the camera. This required me to screw the loop in when I wanted to use the strap and remove it when I wanted to use the tripod. This really became a problem when once I was in a field of tall grass attempting to capture a photo of a tractor as the light was fading quickly. I wanted to put my camera onto my tripod to capture the shot. In my haste to remove my accessory loop I dropped it into the tall grass. Luckily I found it but it lead me to think, “There has got to be a better way…” the concept of the Fusion Plate started to take form. Discussing the concept with my father who was a toolmaker for 10 years and now a manufacturing engineer for the last 25 years, the concept was refined into engineering drawings and then prototypes. We built 4 different iterations of prototypes while refining the design to its final form presented here.

My father had a hobby machine shop at his home with various manual machine tools including a mill and lathe that were used to make the prototypes. Realizing that our design was a very good idea that needed to be shared with other photographers, we bought a CNC milling machine to be able to manufacture our project more effectively to keep the cost at more reasonable levels.

The FUSION PLATE is machined from solid bar stock made of aerospace grade aluminum. The flip up attachment loop is made from  300 series stainless steel to give years of care free service.

The various pictures and video will help you understand what our project is about, how it works, and what it looks like. We have decided to offer our product in the standard camera black, we are also offering them in blue and red. The colors are a bit more expensive to manufacture but not that much more that it would limit your stepping out.

My Goal:
The next step is to get the manufacturing costs low enough that will make our product a success and affordable by all levels of photographer, be you a professional or hobbyist. To do this we need your help to take our manufacturing to the next level. Your pledge of support will help us expand our tooling fixtures and machines to quicken the time from raw materials to finished product, thereby lowering the manufacturing costs.

Now I'm here on Kickstarter to share my product with you and ask for your help. We are offering a number of levels of pledges that will let everyone wishing to help, do so. Please help by investing in one of my pledge levels.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The biggest risk we face with the fusion plate is our production capabilities. We are working with new machinery and learning how to optimize our production work flow. We are constantly working to shave production time off the machining of the Fusion Plate. The stainless steel loop also presents some issues as machining stainless steel is not a simple process. We are working very hard to make sure our production process is as efficient as possible. To buffer against the delivery deadlines we have laid out, we have started to purchase some of the materials required, anti-slip pads, attachment screws, etc. Also we have begun some of the machining required to deliver product on time.

FAQ

  • Safety was one of our key concerns in designing the Fusion Plate, The plate is machined from solid aluminum, the loop is made from solid stainless steel. The hinge pin gets alot of questions, it has a shear strength of 1100lbs.

A lot of testing has gone into the plate. We have been field testing prototypes for over a year and we have conducted stress tests on the plate. The stress tests have included picking and droping weights that would exceed real world use of the plate.

I am very confident in the plate, its materials and its design. My father who has worked on this project with me is an engineer for a major corporation. Aside from him we have consulted with other professional engineers on design of components.

I am a photographer as well and have expensive gear that I do not want to see damaged.

I believe in this product, if I didn't we would not be putting it out there.

  • It already has! Being that we have achieved full funding we have already ordered aluminum and have begun the machining process to make sure we fulfill our commitment on time.

  • No, The Fusion Plate is designed to work with tripod heads with an Arca-Swiss Standard clamp. Manfrotto does not use the Arca-Swiss Standard clamp on their tripod heads.
