What is Clockwork Watch: Tick Tock IPA?
Clockwork Watch: Tick Tock IPA is a multicultural twist on the Victorian era, set in a genre called Steampunk, at a time when clockwork mechanics, and weird science are the two most important developments in the world.
Our overarching story is told through graphic novels, interactive promenade theatre, live events, free-form role-play, an interactive book, and a feature film.
What is this Kickstarter For?
This Kickstarter is to fund Tick Tock IPA #3, the third and final book in the Tick Tock series. It is a hand drawn, and coloured graphic novel, illustrated by Jennie Gyllblad, lettered by Mike Stock, front page designs are by Fabio Duarte Martins, and edited by Corey Brotherson.
What's The Story About?
Tick Tock IPA is the story of Ervin, a Clockwork Servant who falls into a brewery’s fermentation tank, and gains his sentience. Exactly the opposite of what would happen to a human being. He finds himself in a world sick to the core, searching for a miracle.
The series is a continuation of a story from the Steampunk world of Clockwork Watch. It’s a tale of perseverance and determination against the odds, the fight for freedom, and an alternative / fictionalised history of the Victorian era’s first internationally renowned Indian Pale Ale - Hodgson's IPA.
What Happened Since We Launched in 2011
We remain a self-published project, and despite not having distribution we've notched up several 'wins' since our first book, The Arrival, was published in 2011/12.
Our second book, Clockwork Watch: Breakaway featured many of our funders as characters in the narrative. We felt that immersing them in our story helped further our plan to make them feel part of the adventure, and encourage them to help co-create our storyworld.
2014 was a momentous year for Clockwork Watch, as author Yomi Ayeni was presented with a Starburner Galactic Courier Service Award at the San Diego Comic Con.
At The Asylum 2014 in Lincoln, Yomi was awarded Fellowship of the Victorian Steampunk Society, and he was involved in the Longitude Punk'd Exhibition at the Royal Observatory in London, where an audience interacted with the Clockwork Watch: Tick Tock IPA narrative staged as immersive theatre.
Over the past four years we have hosted several immersive theatrical events, and brought part of the Clockwork Watch story to life. These shows are participatory excursions, and are co-created by the attendees. Some last for more than nine-hours, such as Clockwork Underworld.
This year Clockwork Watch was voted Steampunk Chronicle Readers Choice 2015 Best Graphic Novel
Tick Tock IPA #3, is a tale that is so far fetched, it will have you questioning many of the things you've learnt about history, and will prompt you to revisit recent events as we put a unique spin on life as we know it.
Who Is Behind This Mad Tale?
Clockwork Watch is a collaborative project with Corey Brotherson (Editor), Fabio Duarte Martins (Front Page Design), Mike Stock (Letterer), Jennie Gyllblad (Illustrator), and Yomi Ayeni (Author).
If we pass our target, which we hope to do (with your support, and some wind in our sails), we will have a bit more leverage to do some amazing things. Did you know that Clockwork Watch was originally written as a film? No, we wont go for the film just yet, but we've started adapting the script into a new series of books.
Reaching the £9000 mark will kickstart the early production Countenance, the final part of the Clockwork Watch story, which was written as a prequel to the film script. This book is scheduled for publication in July 2016, but we will publish it this year.
Corey says it is the most brutal part of the narrative, and Jennie is yet to read it, because she knows it will distract her from working on Tick Tock #3.
Raising £12000 will give us the means to produce a limited edition BIGGER A3 compilation of all the Clockwork Watch: Tick Tock IPA books, which look amazing! These will be hand-bound, and have a fancy cover.
Arriving at the £15000 mark, gives us enough funds to create the Full Clockwork Watch, a book that combines, The Arrival, Breakaway, Countenance (scheduled for 2016), and our three Tick Tock IPA's.
We will even ask Mr Hodgson to make a special batch of his IPA, to serve at a joint launch party.
Risks and challenges
If we fail in funding this book, aspects of the Clockwork Watch project will fail. Even though our schedule currently allows us to deliver this on time, lack of finances means Jennie will have to work on other projects to make a living.
In the event of a disaster hitting our schedule, we will keep everyone informed of developments, and endeavour to deliver as soon as we possibly can.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
