Shipping Update, Game Samples, and Essen

Hey everyone!

We're back from Germany, we've cleared the email backlog, and we're ready to give you another progress update. Lots of exciting things have happened in the past week - not only did we get to show off the game to many more people at Essen Spiel, but we received our first samples from the factory - Core Space is almost a real, physical thing!

It's real!
It's real!

Anyway, first things first:

Shipping Update

When the campaign was live we estimated a shipping date of November 2018, and earlier this summer we were nearly ready to press the button. Before doing so, we thought we should take a step back and look at the long-term plans for Core Space. This is not just a Kickstarter that will come and go in a flash - we want Core Space to stand the test of time, with a full retail launch and FLGS support. This is an immersive campaign game that you're going to want to keep coming back to.

With that in mind, we took the decision to hold off on the production. We brought in a professional editor to clarify, develop and future-proof the rules to ensure that the game is playable for years to come - with new missions and expansions dropping straight into the existing framework far more seamlessly. In doing so we've also streamlined some of the mechanics so you can spend more time playing and less time looking things up. Nothing has fundamentally changed from the game we envisioned, it's just in a sleeker, shinier package! It's a big package too - Kickstarter backers will be getting the full deluxe hardback rulebook in their box - that's 180 pages of Core Space goodness!

Outside of the core rules, we've also made sure that all of the add-ons and expansions are truly compelling in their own right. For example, the shuttle is no longer just a cool piece of terrain. It's now a piece of equipment that can actually be purchased in game, and used for daring deployments, emergency extractions, or even a quick shopping trip!

While developing these rules, in hindsight, we didn't structure some of the add-ons in the way we would have liked. It turned out that we couldn't bundle the additional rules with the appropriate minis in the way we would hope to for the retail products.

Get to the Shuttle!
Get to the Shuttle!

Not to worry though! We can't have our backers missing out, so all of the additional rules and missions will be sent out digitally to everyone who backed the game, so there's nothing you won't have. After seeing the rules, if you decide you want some extra minis we will continue to stock the KS add-ons on our website for a limited period before they are packaged up for retail.

While the rules were being worked on, we haven't wasted time elsewhere. We've brought in an extra sculptor to refine the details across the entire range of figures, and we've also added more Harvester and Devastator poses so every model in the set is unique (of course backers get a second set thrown in).

New poses!
New poses!

We have also written more background text and narrative missions, refined all the components to ensure the best possible quality, and tested and retested everything over and over.

If that wasn't enough, Core Space backers will also be the first Battle Systems customers to receive our brand new terrain clips in their pledges! We have commissioned a new plastic tool for the clips with a new profile that makes them stronger, tighter, and far more durable than before. Also they are backwards compatible across all our terrain ranges and when set up they blend in nicely just like the current clips. All Core Space pledges have been upgraded to the new clips at no extra cost.

With all of the extra development complete, you'll be happy to hear that Core Space is now in pre-production! The additional work has delayed the project compared to our original plans, but we are sure you'll agree that the improvements are well worth it! We now hope to begin shipping in February 2019.

Game Samples

With Core Space going into production, the samples have started to arrive, and we couldn't be happier! This is all (obviously) not final yet, but we wanted to share it anyway. I've waffled on long enough in this update, so I'll let the pictures speak for themselves :-P.

The Core Game
The Core Game

OK, so I'll still talk a little :-P. To the left of this image you will see a cardboard lattice. This will be supplied flat-packed, but once you have punched your terrain out of the card sheets you can slot this lattice together in the now empty space at the bottom of the box. The compartments can then be used as a tray/organiser for your walls, crates and other terrain pieces. Clever eh? Also on the left you will see some yellow dice that were not in the KS originally. These are used for activating Security Wardens and are now included in every core game pledge.

Dashboard and Pegs
Dashboard and Pegs

These will be supplied in grey plastic when finished, with the pegs in three different colours. Also seen here is the production sample of the character board, in our new laminated card that can be used with dry-erase pens :-).

Essen Spiel 2018

We've spent the past week in Essen, and it's been such great fun. We've met loads of awesome people, and showed a lot of them how to play Core Space. We also had our terrain ranges on display, and one of the key selling points was the ability to drop Core Space straight into any of them. Playing on an Outlands board will give a whole different feel to the game - well worth trying if you get the chance.

A massive thanks to Michael and Mathias for their stunning work running the Core Space demos. There was an overwhelming response to the game with people loving every aspect of the game from the terrain to the minis and the overall gameplay.

We also had all of the painted minis on display, including a few that had only arrived at the last minute, like these:

Signing Off

That's it for now, but we'll be back with another production update as soon as we have something to share. In the meantime, we'll be brainstorming the next steps for Core Space, if we can tear Colin away from his new favourite toy that is...

If you've got any ideas for what you want to see next, let us know in the comments.

Thanks everyone!

... oh and happy gaming :)

That's not good enough, Colin. We deserve a 200+ page rulebook! 8-)

Jason... correct and the book is already busting at the seems :oD

@BS - if the only thing missing from the rulebook will be the missions for the add-ons, is there no way they can be squeezed into our nice shiny hardback rulebook? That could mean that some backers have mission logs that they don't then have minis and terrain for, but surely that's better then the other way around?
I'm guessing it will push you over a production price point or something, so no great shakes, but just asking....

      What a fantastic update !!!

This game keeps getting better and better. Thank you for all the care and thought you're putting into this project and ensuring a strong future for Core Space.

Can you provide a listing of what the actual content difference between the pledges and the retail packaging of the expansions so we can begin to formulate what additional minis we may want / need ?

Thanks and keep up the great work !

PS - The new clip design is great, too. Well thought !!

    11. Devin Brackett on

Thank you for the update. I can't tell you how excited I am to see this update. Everything looks great.

I'm really looking forward to making my own characters with the blank cardsets. Would be nice - if it's not already there - to have blank weapons and equipment sets too! I'm truly happy I backed this project and am looking forward to a long and eventful gaming sessions with Core Space. Thank you for all the hard work you all do.

Thanks for all the comments! To address a couple of questions:

Rulebook size - don't be too intimidated :-P. As Drew said, everything you need to know for the core rules is over and done with in about 35 pages. The rest of the book is the missions, campaign rules, optional advanced rules, character creation, background, behind the scenes notes, artwork, and reference for all the skills and equipment. Think of it as getting the core game and loads of expansion content all in one place!

At retail there will be a smaller softback rulebook in the box, with the deluxe rulebook available separately.

Additional digital content - apologies if this was unclear. To clarify, I will use the Galactic Corps as an example. When we structured the retail products, it made sense to bundle the Galactic Corps and Security together into an 'expansion'. They will not be in the retail core game, and so the expansion will contain their models, the security dice, their rules, some extra scenery (the particle transmitter in this case), and some new missions featuring them.

The issue was that half of these models were included for free in the KS pledge and the others were add-ons, meaning that backers that didn't buy the add-on would sort of have half an expansion. We didn't want to compromise the retail product, but we also didn't want backers to have to buy a complete expansion when they already had half of it. That's why we will be keeping the add-ons available on our website for a limited time so backers that want to get everything for this expansion can still do so.

Minis and scenery aside, the Galactic Corps rules are in the deluxe book anyway, and we've added the security dice to the pledge, so the only thing that our backers would be missing was the extra missions. These missions will be sent out digitally to all backers - that's what the note in the update referred to. Across the core game, all the expansions, and the crews, there are around 25 missions for you to play, with more planned, so that should keep you all going for a while :-).

    14. Pietro de Martino on

@Drewbacca. Thank You for your reply. I fetched updates and found the TOC. You are right! Calling it a simple rulebook is misleading. It's more like a "construction kit" for Sci-FI adventures, skirmish games and RPG-Like-all-You-want. I will surely check 1st the character\enemy coustomizations to "import" minis from other games. Then creating a shared workplace to submit homebrew campaings and missions should boosts other gamers to check out "Core Space".

    15. Drewbacca
      Superbacker
      on

@Pietro de Martino Yes, there’s lots of diagrams, examples, lore, maps, and everything else you’d want from a 180 page rulebook. It’s really so much more than that. In an earlier update Colin shared the contents page. As you’ll see, it’s actually X amount of pages of rules, then all the campaign missions, pages of lore for the crews, purge etc. then advanced rules for you to implement as-and-how you wish.

And yes, my understanding is only us KS backers will get the deluxe box as part of the game. Retail copies will come with a smaller, softback rulebook. Also, the future looks bright. I myself am (totally in over my head) attempting to write a custom campaign for Core Space that’ll utilise a bunch of components from the Kickstarter. I exect there’ll be lots of custom content – new missions, crews, etc. from other excited backers after they’ve got the game and familiarised themselves with it all.

    16. Drewbacca
      Superbacker
      on

@Bernd Perplies I think what Colin is alluding to is that for those of us who ordered add-ons, you’ll get the extra rules relating to that product separately. E.g. the shuttle will have it’s own set of rules that explain how it’s used in Core Space and come with some extra missions designed to introduce it into the game. Similarly with Guards & Gangers, G-Corp etc. These aren’t in the main rulebook.

    17. Roadrunner on

Thanks for the update, not that surprised that there will be a delay, hardly uncommon for a miniatures KS. Does it bother me, no, I would always wait for a finished, polished game, than something rushed and incomplete.
Wondered about the rules,180 pages plus extra digital content, surely this is not all rules?

Colin stop sleeping with my game, you are going to get drool all over it!
      Cheers mate, looks awesome

    19. Mike Welch on

Usually KS delay updates leave me with a sense of dread, but this makes me feel a lot more comfortable that the final product will be something I will get a lot of use out of. Upgrading the clips and adding rules for the addons is also pretty nice and a good direction IMO. Wish I could get my hands on some of the minis earlier, but I will survive.

    22. Pietro de Martino on

Well if Colin finally get up.. I have some questions. Rulebok 180 pages, i hope it will be full of exaples and diagrams. It's really huge… suppose the most of the book is intended for RPG-like gaming? You stremlined rules but every update the book increased pages. I'm not complaining, I'm really happy, just want to understand.
For retail boxes there will be a "more basic" book? And the backers-Book but will be sold as an expansion? It's quite the same doubt as Bernd Perplies.
What can i say? This KS is getting better an better.
For the future make our heroes to fly back and forth from space-stations to planets surfaces with story-campaing with rescues, smuggling, trading and researches - while kicking-ass lots of Purge minions.
Last thing in the future keep bad guys alien and technological cos most of sci-fi games actually poured legions of Chulhu\Zombie\carno\horror, all the same, figures. Keep sci-fi flag high.

I’m more excited about this game than the dozens of other Kickstarter games that I’m waiting for. I’m totally willing to wait longer if it means a better and more complete game. Great job and good update!

    28. Doug Winters on

I have no doubt it will be totally worth wait!

    29. Sander de Heus on

Thanks for the update, I had the great chance to play a game on Essen Spiell...

To be honest.... How do I say this...

      It was amazing!
I have played alot of different rules sets and Core Space played smooth, clear and worked. The npc's, the purge, the gangs they worked so well and fast with out much difficulty. Compared to the first play video (which where great) the adjustment made things even better. And the Mimi's are Awesome!!

I am very happy with the aditional changes an tweaks. And the abit extra waiting will be worth it for sure! Keep up the great work and thanks for the great chats!

It's a shame we have to wait till February for this to arrive, but I'd rather have a finished game then an incomplete product, so thank you for telling us. In regards to things we'd like to see in the future, the option to make owe own characters would be nice for a future up-date, plus more aliens & NPC characters :3

I had the same question as Bernd Purplies. I didn't really understand the part where there's additional content that we will get digitally. Is there a printed version for retail, or is that just content that won't exist otherwise? Do these digital versions go with content we backed that will be packaged differently for retail?

Sorry, just didn't really understand that part. Not getting testy, just a little confused.

    35. Bernd Perplies on

Nice update! But 180 pages of rules and background? That's not a board game, it's a roleplaying game! :)
There is one part, I did not fully understand:
"While developing these rules, in hindsight, we didn't structure some of the add-ons in the way we would have liked. It turned out that we couldn't bundle the additional rules with the appropriate minis in the way we would hope to for the retail products." Then you talk about sending out rules and missions digitally. Does that mean there will be printed rules and missions for retail we don't get? Or does it mean we will get rules and missions that are not going to go on sale?
