What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

I've been making wooden handlines for years. Unfortunately I simply can't make enough in my garage. With your support I'll be able to have enough made from injection molded polymer to let everyone enjoy this form of fishing.

Remember when fishing was just fun?

Fishing doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Like many anglers, my rig as a kid consisted of line, hook, and sinker wrapped around a soda can. I vividly recall the smell of the water and the little crabs scurrying around the rocks between waves, the exhilaration of landing a fish, and above all, I remember having fun! Isn’t that what fishing is all about?

My first fishing rig as a child was a pop can with some line wrapped around it.

Are You Hooked?

A very wise friend once told me that most fishing gear was designed to catch fishermen. And I must admit that I myself have frequently taken the bait, hook, line, and sinker. But just how much fancy gear does it take to catch a fish? And even more importantly, do the fish even care? No, no they do not. But your buddies care. They care a lot. And what better way to troll your buddies than to out-fish them with just a handline?

The secret to fishing is not fancy gear, it is knowing the fish. If you understand the fish then it really does not matter what gear you have.

What is a handline?

A handline is just that, a line; no rod, no reel. This method of fishing long predates any sort of rod and reel and still today feeds millions of people around the world. It is a direct connection to the fish. Without the buffer of rod and reel every twitch, every strike, is communicated directly to your hands. There is no mechanical drag between you and the fight. This is the bare knuckle boxing of fishing.

No sissy mechanical reels here. Time to fish "mano a mano".

"Cabuya": A New Approach to an Old Practice.

The name “Cabuya” (ka Boo yah) comes from the Taino word for a thin line or string, often used for fishing. These lines, spun from natural fibers, were employed with hooks and lures made from bone and turtle shell to catch fish since time immemorial.

Cabuya Casting Handlines add a little convenience to this ancient practice by keeping one’s line neatly organized yet ready to cast at a moment’s notice. The unique features of this design allows the line to strip off the end of the handline for long casts even with light lures. Not only are they super convenient for backpackers, pilots, paddlers, even survival fishing, handlines are perfect for young children. Every fish feels like a monster without some cheapo kid’s pole and crappy reel in the way.

Features of the Cabuya Casting Handline:

  • Made from a durable high impact polymer, they are resistant to fuel, oil, sunshine, saltwater, and they even float.
  • Each handlines holds 150 yards of 8-20lb monofilament line and can be easily cast distances comparable to a rod and reel.
  • Each wrap eats up 10 inches of line, allowing you to retrieve fast enough to keep even heavy lures in play.
  • They are compact and lightweight, easily fitting into a pocket or pack.
  • Save time on the water. Pre-rig several handlines with different tackle setups.
  • Perfect for impromptu or survival fishing.
  • Made in the USA from the highest grade materials

The Story...

I’ve been fishing with handlines since I was a child. One of my favorite handlines is the familiar Cuban Yoyo. I’ve owned over a dozen but I keep giving them away to friends and even strangers who have approached me with great curiosity while fishing. Cuban Yoyo’s are fantastic handlines that have been around longer than I have. However, they aren’t very compact and I wanted a handline that fit into my pack and pocket.

A few years back I stumbled upon Streamlines Casting Handlines while searching for an alternative to the Cuban Yoyo. Jack Cohen, the inventor of Streamlines, began making handlines like this when he lived in Costa Rica. Handline fishing is very common in Costa Rica and Jack made just about the perfect compact handline based on his experience there. I purchased one and immediately fell in love, so much so that I began to sell them through my website.

Unfortunately the supply of Jack’s handlines has dwindled as he is unable to manufacture any more and has passed the torch to me. I’ve done a little bit of modification to Jack’s original design to fit my needs and tested them in wooden models. I’m very grateful to Jack for giving me such an opportunity to go continue developing these handlines as the Cabuya.

Let's Go Fishing!

I want to give everyone a chance to enjoy this method of fishing. With your support I can pick up where Jack and Streamlines left off by providing the best quality handline possible. I wish to purchase molds to make the Cabuya Handlines from a super tough high impact polymer. I've located a great injection mold company here in the USA that can do a superb job. Let's get them to work so we can be ready to fish this summer!

Backer Rewards

Later in the project backers will be able to adjust their pledges, select additional rewards and other addons.

Production Timeline

As soon as the project funds I'll submit a down payment to start production on the molds. Estimated turn around time for the molds is 6-8 weeks, with a couple weeks in there for testing and production. We should be shipping Handlines and Backer rewards by the middle of Summer if not sooner.

Risks and challenges

You could say this isn't my first rodeo, er, kickstarter campaign. The backstory on the handiness is that I'm resuming manufacturing on an already existing product. Not withstanding a few design changes, the polymer handlines are tried and tested.

I don't anticipate any issues with delivery. And of course backers will be updated with any and all developments as they happen.
