About this project
The Orion iPad Stand was designed with aesthetics, function, and quality in mind. Each Orion stand will be machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum then anodized either black, gun metal grey, or Kickstarter green. What makes Orion so unique? Orion is comprised of three precision machined, anodized aluminum parts. All three parts are held together using magnets. Each magnet has a pull force rating of 2.2 pounds. There are a total of eight magnets in each Orion stand and together that's over 17 pounds of total pull force strength! Why do I use magnets? Using magnets allows the user to disassemble Orion in a matter of seconds without the need of tools which makes traveling with Orion a snap! Simply pull Orion apart and put it in your computer bag. Orion also has six rubber o-rings that come in contact with your tablet device to provide a soft, nonslip surface when placing your tablet device in the stand. Orion works with all three generations of the iPad as well as many other tablet devices. Orion combines form with function to give you a stand like no other; a true conversation piece on any desk or countertop.

I've been working on the design of Orion for over nine months now. I've made several ABS prototypes (see youtube video) to help resolve any and all design issues. Using rapid prototyping has allowed me to refine the design and make the necessary changes to ensure a fantastic, functional finished product. The video shows the ABS prototypes I developed, but with your support I can take Orion from the ABS prototypes used in the video intoprecision machinedproduction parts.I already have a local company here in the USA lined up to manufacture all the parts of Orion. I'm currently working with the company to develop five aluminum samples. Images of those aluminum samples will be added to Kickstarter as soon as they are finished.
Where the money goes....
- Material: Billet 6061 T-6 aluminum, rubber o-rings, and magnets.
- Production costs: CNC machined parts.
- Finish: Hard anodized finish on all parts.
- Laser etching: Etching the logo and serial numbers on the limited edition models.
Risks and challenges
Materials: Orion is made entirely of aluminum and a potential issue could be the price of aluminum at the moment of placing the order. The price could be higher. However, the factory that I'm working with has enough aluminum on hand to produce over 2000 units at this time. Therefore, it's unlikely the price will be effected. If the project exceeds 2000 units I've been assured by the manufacturer that the price per unit will not change.
Orion will be manufactured in the USA from a local factory in San Diego. All CNC machining will done at this factory. The turnaround time for 500 units is one week. The parts will then be sent to another local company to be anodized. Once that process is complete each part will have "Orion" laser etched onto it as well as serial numbers on the limited edition versions.
All units will then be shipped to me. Once I receive them I will add the rubber orings, magnets, package them and ship them.
