Why You Should Back This Project
It’s not charity. It’s not consumerism. It’s patronage.
From feudal Japan to Renaissance Europe, patronage has been a vital part of art and music history. As a concept, patronage lies somewhere between no-strings-attached donation and the outright purchase of a creative product. Within blurred edges, it implies a relationship between artist and art-enthusiast: an understanding that in exchange for monetary support (often the most difficult kind for an artist to garner), an artist will continue to create the best art they are capable of; the kind only possible when one doesn’t have to worry about whether or not they actually have the means to pull it off.
In 2011, thanks to the proliferation of social networks, music-hosting and distribution sites, and cheap recording software and equipment, it is easier than ever to create and sell music. For the same reasons, it is harder than ever to get anyone to pay attention to what you create; harder still to get them to pay hard-earned dollars for it. Thanks to Kickstarter, though, the concept of patronage has been reborn for the 21st century. And we are but humble minstrels wishing to throw our hats into the ring.
Our Project: The Cinemascope EPs
Within the next few weeks, Hotels will begin recording our latest musical endeavor: a series of three EPs entitled The Cinemascope EPs. Why a series of EPs and not an album? A couple of reasons. First, a few old sayings about brevity being the soul of wit, good things coming in small packages, and the like. Second, due to various reasons- some practical and some ridiculous- our previous releases have run in cycles only marginally shorter than presidential elections. This is bad for us in that we can stagnate, and bad for you in that when we finally get off the island ala Tom Hanks in Castaway, you have long thought us dead and remarried a younger, hipper, tighter-jeaned or longer-bearded band. In the interest of avoiding both of these outcomes, we want to get our best new music out to you as fast as possible, and to keep doing it at regular intervals.
Finally, in keeping with the project’s theme- our love of/ obsession with movies and movie worlds- we thought it best to deliver this suite of songs about travel, romance, solitude, and rest in the form of a trilogy, or triptych, if you will. In fact, the Star Wars trilogy was an inspiration for this mode of storytelling. And it will be again when in 20 years we release a second trilogy that is uninspired, horribly written, poorly performed, and made of mostly artificial means.
Project Schedule/ How Your Support Helps
As mentioned earlier, the recording will begin in early November and continue at regular intervals for the duration of the project. While the first EP is being released, we will be recording the second, and so on, with the goal of delivering all three EPs before the end of the 2012 calendar year, as well as compiling them into an omnibus package along with bonus material. Your patronage will help pay for recording and mixing sessions, analog tape (you heard us!), mastering, and a portion of pressing/ distribution/ promotion. In truth, the final cost may far exceed our fundraising goal, but we felt it more important to set a realistic, achievable goal that would put us well on our way. The outlays for hookers, studio cocaine, and the London Philharmonic will just have to come from somewhere else.
Feel like being a patron of the arts today? If so, give as little as $6 or as much as $1000 and not only will you help in supporting the creative process, but you’ll have a host of unique gifts to choose from, all of which incorporate some aspect of what we love and know the best: music.
Our campaign runs until 11:59pm on the last day of November, but don’t delay! We don’t want to eat into your Christmas shopping funds.
Be a patron.
