About

Functionality. Aesthetics. Safety. Motion. Universal Design.

The story of Pilius began a year and a half ago after winning an international creative challenge aiming at the design of fashion accessory equipment for physically disabled people who use wheelchairs. “DESIGN (DIS)ABILITY” competition was launched by RogLab in collaboration with the YHD – Association for Theory and Culture of Handicap.

After one year of testing, researching and prototyping, we have finally found a way to design a fashionable and functional raincoat, enhanced with convenient features for wheelchair users. Even though it incorporates some standard features of the raincoat, it is also customized to suit the individual’s needs.

Our project is based on a proactive approach to creating a designer product that benefits those with both temporary and permanent limited mobility. People with disabilities are faced with the decision of choosing comfort and functionality over aesthetics and individuality.

We want to offer them both.

Pilius can be rolled up tightly into a discreet bag with Velcro loops that fit onto the push handles or push bar of any manual wheelchair. On the lower part of the bag are two zippers that open from the middle outwards. With a simple move, you can pull the sewn-in reflective strap and unfold the raincoat from the back of the wheelchair.

With its easy access and fast unpacking, Pilius offers effective protection from rain and the elements.

Features like a thoughtfully designed hood, extended and reinforced sleeves, customized strapping options and reflective tape that provides high-visibility, are all designed and constructed to fit the body perfectly, providing real comfort and protection.

The specially designed hood with peak has an enlarged neckline and aperture for optimized peripheral vision.

The reflective strap that's primarily used to unfold Pilius from the bag is also used for fastening the raincoat around the ankles to keep it in place.

Elastic attached on each side are used to fasten the raincoat around the backrest of the wheelchair with a plastic clip. That way the back of the raincoat creates a perfect universal fit, eliminating unwanted bulk and preventing rainwater from drenching the seat.

Pilius is cut from a technologically advanced material from the Swiss company Schoeller Textiles, which specializes in high-performance textiles widely used in active sport applications. Thanks to its special membrane technology, Pilius provides optimal protection, even in adverse weather conditions.

The colour of the waterproof zipper, elastic cord, cord locks and eyelets are all well matched to create the overall unified look of Pilius.

There are no seams running across the most exposed area – shoulders; instead one seam runs up the arm and finishes in the back, following the lines of the wheelchair’s backrest.

Welded seams make Pilius waterproof.

Capes that are currently available on the market, are a practical solution but they are shapeless. Pilius was thoughtfully designed by a fashion designer who took into consideration the specific needs of the individual wearing the garment.

Within designing for disabilities, where teams still tend to come exclusively from clinical and engineering backgrounds, the dominant culture is one of solving problems at the expense of aesthetics. We want to produce a highly functional and quality clothing, but maintaining the autonomy and uniqueness of the design.

The translucent fabric helps create a contemporary, urban look and emphasizes the individual style of the user.

While your favourite raincoat is out refreshing, you can enjoy the weather, because it’s probably sunny.

With the two Velcro loops you can adjust the fit of the bag on different width sizes of wheelchair.

Pilius can be easily folded into the bag. For safety reasons you can attach the raincoat on the bag with a small Velcro dot so it doesn’t fall on the ground while pulling it out.

We were really excited when we found out that the material is also touch-sensitive and you can operate any mobile device without even taking it out of the pocket!

After use, Pilius can be easily folded into the inside-out pocket with the reversible zipper, so it can be stored in a smaller, more compact package.

The raincoat’s reinforced sleeves are designed with an extended construction with thumb-holes to protect the hands and minimize exposure to the elements, without impairing wheelchair operation.

And keeping safety well in mind we added an extra reflective tape on the back of the hood.

 THINK BEFORE YOU CUT

We approached our project with sustainability in mind from the very beginning. We wanted to include environmental goals in our product and consider the complete lifecycle of our designs. So we decided to make this key accessory using the leftover materials from Pilius – fabric and metal eyelet. Not only practical, but also a daily reminder of a nice gesture (you did)!

To tie in another special story into our concept, we also made a multifunctional velour blanket (100% polyester) to keep you warm in many ways.

First you should check which size fits you regarding your body height. In the chart below you can find the maximum bust, waist and hips measures that help you find the perfect fit.

For reference: Barbara (body height: 173cm / 5'7ft) is wearing M size Pilius and Primož (body height: 190cm / 6'2ft) is wearing an XL Pilius.

As a team we are entering this Kickstarter campaign in hope that advances in mainstream design will eventually find their way into products for people with disabilities and smaller markets that cannot afford to support the cost of their development.

With the best quality materials we are determined to produce durable, high performance clothing, while at the same time maintaining real design integrity.

Why is disability still an afterthought?

Even though it is long known that no two individuals are the same in any developmental dimension, there are still shortcomings in particular design areas. During our visitations to the rehabilitation centre, we were confronted with this fact.

With Pilius, we are trying to establish DESIGN (DIS)ABILITY brand that would pave the way for a series of - functionally and aesthetically - pleasing products for different types of disabilities. We want to go beyond universal design. Take a new approach, advocated by a wide range of users, designers, engineering teams, social sciences and humanities.

Design needs to include every body regardless of its current status as disabled or not.

Risks and challenges

The products in our campaign are prototypes, so please have tolerance for minimal changes that won't affect the overall look or functionality. If there will be any changes, they will definitely be for the better.

Because of the high quality fabrics and the design of Pilius, production will require 5 months from the end of the Kickstarter, hence the June 2016 date.

We will be extremely transparent and will update you on the status of production and shipment whenever there is something new to share.

We want to produce Pilius and all the rewards locally with manufacturing expertise and experience that we have access to.

And sure, good fortune just might play a role in our delivery timing, but the quality of our delivering product isn’t about luck.

Simply put, our product is our promise to our backers. Pilius.
