About this project
Hi, My name is Caroll Taveras.
Thank you for viewing my kickstarter page.
Photo Studio project
Small town photo studios in the first half of the twentieth century were once abundant and in a way taken for granted. When people lived in one area for many years the relationship between photographer and subject was often long term. In an age of digital media, where the digital camera has become the expected format of most photographers, having access to a photo studio in your neighborhood, where everyone can be photographed with a 4x5 view camera is not only a fun activity, but a necessary addition to the historical and social documentation of our time.
In 2009 I opened a temporary Photo Studio on Atlantic Avenue, in the downtown section of Brooklyn. I charged $5 a portrait and was open for about 2 1/2 months. The result, over 250 faces of what the people of Brooklyn and the surrounding neighborhoods look like today. The plan is to take this project to different communities around the world. I have found a location in East London by Hackney. As excited as I am to take my project on the road the cost, especially in London can be quite overwhelming. Your support will make a huge difference in it's success. Please pledge today.
I plan to bring my Photo Studio project to East London, Chatsworth Road store front for a month in late June. Turning the store front into a neighborhood Portrait Studio. Where sitters can have their portraits taken for only £10. The £10 fee is the exchange between Photographer and sitter emphasizing the labor of the work. I want the studio to be a popular weekend destination, also a place where the community can gather and talk, exchange ideas while they wait for their portrait. My goal is to document what the people living in East London look like right now at this point in time. I want to eventually gather enough cities and towns around the world and bring it all together in a future exhibition and book. I will use your generous support to pay for airfare to London, Materials such as, 4x5 film, 4x5 polaroid, processing of the film, making prints, backdrops, cost of the store front rental, a bench or stool for sitters and the cost of being in London for a month.
