OUR FIRST COLLECTION:
NATURAL... naturally dyed, handwoven and 100% natural unbleached cotton. No chemical dyes creeping through your kid’s skin, no water pollution from the manufacture and use of synthetic dyes, a healthy environment for all the producers and users of this collection!
VERSATILE... a season-less collection which is meant to be worn all year. All of our items look stylish on their own in the warmer months and fantastic when layered with long sleeved shirts, tights or leggings in the cooler ones!
FUN... a focus on pockets! As a mother of two I have found myself carrying sticks, stones, chestnuts, flowers, toys, dolls - you name it. I believe that big pockets to hold treasures are a must in children's clothing!
WHAT WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE:
- Successfully marry traditional techniques with thoughtful designs to create products for today’s world.
- Create a thriving business which is environmentally and socially conscious.
- Empower and support women by paying them fair wages for meaningful work in a healthy work environment.
- Protect and preserve the rich textile traditions of natural dyeing and hand weaving. Teach about the value of natural dyes.
- Plant organic natural dye gardens - the first will be planted this summer to provide color for future projects.
- Support the planting of more organic cotton locally and move toward certification.
- Give back more than we take - we will plant three trees for every $100 we spend on shipping to help compensate for carbon emissions.
- Use recycled paper for our hang tags and packaging and water based, biodegradable inks for our printing.
Sandra and Sylvia met on the Thai-Burma border and immediately decided to collaborate on a line of children's clothing. They shared the goals of preserving traditional weaving and dyeing skills, spreading organic cotton cultivation, compensating with fair wages, and being part of the emerging slow textile movement. Thus was born the Vermilio - Chimmuwa collaboration, with the mission to build a thriving business while creating soulful and healthy artisan made clothes with a story...because every thread has a soul!
THE LAUNCH COLLECTION:
VERMILIO... We are so passionate about natural colors that we named our business after a very special dye - Kermes vermilio. A little bug which feeds on the Kermes oak and has been used since neolithic times. It was used to dye the robes of emperors and clergy. Even the English word "crimson" comes from the word Kermes. Now that's some history!
THE DANGERS of chemical dyes cannot be stressed enough. The wet processing of textiles is responsible for an astounding 20 - 25% of ALL chemical pollution on earth. Hormone disrupting dioxins, carcinogenic amines, heavy metals and formaldehyde get into the environment, onto workers at factories and remain on finished clothing. In addition, conventionally dyed textiles have an extremely large carbon and fresh water footprint. (Please see our video on this topic below.) But it doesn't have to be like that. We offer a solution.

NATURAL DYES are alive, nontoxic and nonpolluting. They are renewable and can be grown sustainably across the earth. Most are as easy to grow as a sunflower. They are slow and beautiful. We practice, preserve and promote the art and science of coloring textiles naturally.

We are proud of our team of natural dyers, weavers, sewers, designers, managers and dreamers. We've all been working hard for the past 6 months!
Given the nature of our products, the most challenging part are the timelines. The intricacies of dyeing and weaving by hand require a great deal of expertise, time and work. Only after this, the sewing process can begin. We've been in constant contact with our team, perfecting our colors, patterns, samples and relationships. Everyone is anticipating our full production order and should have no problem with the volume.
But we would like to apologize beforehand in the unlikely event of any changes in schedule and promise to be as transparent as possible and communicate efficiently should issues arise!
Political turmoil? That is happening far, far away in Bangkok. Our team is rural and mostly unaffected by those things. Life goes on, people must work, eat and be merry.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
