Homegrown & Hungry: An Athens Ohio Roller Derby Production
Forged from the grit and girth of talented, creative, and athletic women from our community, Athens Ohio Roller Derby’s Appalachian Hell Betties is an all-star grassroots roller derby team entering into our first competitive production season. After over a year and a half of perilous organization and training, we are well on our way to providing Athens Ohio with something famously exciting and new: Live Roller Derby productions! Our debut ‘Homegrown & Hungry: An Athens Ohio Roller Derby Production’ is already scheduled and planning well underway…
On June 23rd, 2012 at Bird Arena, the Appalachian Hell Betties are hosting our worthy opponents, the Glass City Rollergirls from Toledo, Ohio, for an evening of rough and tumble roller derby accompanied by the groovy rhythms of local music acts, DJ’s and dancers. The event will be followed by zesty celebration at our local Athens Ohio brewery, where the live music continues as you sit back and enjoy a specially brewed ‘Hell Bettie’ stout. Sounds fantastic, right? You want in!
Our plans for the evening are almost finalized, but we need your help…
Funding a roller derby production is not a cheap venture and we cannot do it alone. Athens Ohio Roller Derby is a non-profit organization. Every skater on our team donates not only their talents on the track, but also those involving photography, graphic design, textile arts, public relations and marketing, and the list continues. And for the most part we fund ourselves, every member paying monthly dues to help support the activities of AORD, venue rental, insurance, printing costs, and merchandising.
With your support, the Appalachian Hell Betties will provide Athens Ohio with an unforgettable night. Your pledge will assist not only the success of the evening, but will ensure that you have taken part in bringing something truly unique and exhilarating to southeast Ohio and the community of Roller Derby enthusiasts at large.
What will my pledge pay for?
Your pledge will be used to offset the costs of renting the venue and sound system, printing and publicity, a travel stipend for the opposing team and referees, and ‘Homegrown and Hungry’ merchandising. Our promise to you is to spend your pledge wisely. It means the world to us that you want to be involved.

Appalachian Hell Betties in action:
What have we done for you?
The Appalachian Hell Betties are a strong and proactive force within the community. Some examples include hosting events to raise funds for My Sister’s Place, as we take a stand against domestic violence. We also recently participated in a trash clean-up alongside Wayne National Forest. We also like to have a good time, that’s why we hosted a free roller skating and pizza party just over a month ago. It was awesome getting a chance to roller skate with you and your families. And there are many more events such as these planned for the future. It is a part of who we are, giving back to the community that supports us both as an organization, but also as individuals. Here are some links to articles and events that we have taken part in:
THANK YOU! WE LOVE YOU! And look forward to seeing you at our debut!
