About this project

UPDATE JULY 15: We reached our revised $13,000 goal! Thank you so much for your support. Because of you, BR will now be able to launch the new web site and purchase the bostonreview-dot-com domain. The final deadline is tomorrow at 9:00 am: every additional dollar that we raise here will directly and materially support the development of the new site. Thank you!

The Stakes are High

Are you disappointed by the tone and depth of public debate? Are you frustrated that sensationalist political coverage and talking heads drive our public discourse? You are in good company. And it is a big problem. The media—old and new—are not providing honest, thoughtful, open debate on key issues like economics, war, and justice. Our democracy is suffering as a result.

The Boston Review Mission

Boston Review is an award-winning, independent, nonprofit magazine of ideas, publishing on everything from politics and economics to fiction and philosophy. Our mission is to improve the state of public discourse by encouraging fact-based, reasonable, open debate on serious issues.

Every issue of BR includes a New Democracy Forum with thinkers from across the political spectrum debating topics like inequality, military intervention, technology, global poverty, and political reform. Our articles are written by people who know what they are talking about and who know the difference between a serious discussion and a shouting match.

Goal: Effect Change through the Web

The decision to provide all of our content on the Web for free is driven by our mission. To improve the tone of public debate, we need to make our content available as widely as possible. Through the Web, we’re able to reach many, many more people than we would in print alone.

In 2010, as part of a major relaunch of the magazine, we decided to fundamentally redesign our Web site. We also moved to a gorgeous new print edition and expanded our editorial staff. The print transition has been a great success; our new Web design is not yet complete.

To achieve our aims, we need to do more than simply make content available on the internet. We need a community. But to build a community online, we need a modern web site that can become a place for our readers to really engage, both with the ideas under scrutiny and with each other.

With this new Web site, we’ll be able to publish more feature essays, reviews, literature, and forums on a regular basis. You’ll be able to navigate the site more easily, find the content that most interests you, and find other readers who share similar concerns. All of this will remain, always, completely free.

Why Kickstarter, Why You?

We are obviously excited about the new site. And we are in the last phase of development—the end is clearly in sight. But we need your help to finish the job. We need to raise $10,000.

Your donation will contribute directly and materially to the production of the new site. It will pay for the developer to implement new features, the staff to debug problems, and our designers to polish the look. With the resources in place, we will be able to finish the whole project in a matter of weeks.

However, Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing venture: BR gets zero dollars if we don't reach our goal. So please give generously. With your donation, you’ll not only be supporting nonprofit, independent media, you’ll also be helping to support the vibrant, open, democratic culture that we all want and need.

Thank you for your support.
