What IS "Neon Milk"?
Neon Milk is a concept album that follows the story of two aliens who have crash-landed on planet Earth, and are doing everything they can to blend in with the strange creatures known as 'humans'. Dan Span and Dom John, who have been making music for many years, deftly mix genres as varied as rock, rap, dance, and dubstep into a tongue-in-cheek exploration of what it feels like to be an alien, even on your own planet.
Who Are The Space Bards?
1997 was the fateful year Dom John and Dan Span met at recess. Over the years we’ve dressed up as jedis, old people, wizards, and even gangsters in the name of filmmaking and comedy.
Earlier this year we thought it would be fun to try making music together, blending our very different solo material into one cohesive sound. After we laid down the first track, we knew there was no turning back. We continued to write another eight songs all in one month, and by April we had an entire albums worth.
In the midst of writing the album, our lifelong love for video games came to the forefront as we entered and won a fan video contest for "Shroud of the Avatar", an upcoming MMO from fellow astronaut, Richard "Lord British" Garriott. Since then our song/video has been featured at Rooster Teeth Expo and Comic Con NY.
In the process we met the talented Ember Isolte, and couldn't help but collaborate with her on another video game tune, this one paying homage to World of Warcraft.
After all the video game fun, we're eager to return to our original vision, and take all of our new found friends and fans on a laughter-filled tour of the universe and beyond!
What's All This Got To Do With Me?
We've got the songs. We've got the engineer. Sure, we could save up all our pennies and get this done eventually, but we thought it'd be much more fun to get you guys involved and make the creation of this album unforgettable. From ringtones, to cover requests, to personalized songs and videos, our perk list is chock-full of ways for you to have a special and unique experience to go along your copy of "Neon Milk"!
So, What's It Gonna Sound Like?
Here is a brief sampler of some of the rough demo tracks we have lying around in Garageband for "Neon Milk":
And here's an actual studio version of one of the tracks:
We refuse to give you anything less!
Where's The Money Going, Anyway?
For this kickstarter our goal is set to the minimum amount we need to produce a 6 song EP for you guys. Each complete song will cost roughly $300 to produce from tracking to mastering in the recording studio, and the rest will go towards manufacturing the CD's and mailing them to your door. So, to break it down:
Starting Goal - 6 Song EP - $3000
- Studio Costs - $1800
- Album/Swag Production - $800
- Est. Mailing/Packaging costs - $200
- Est. Taxes/KS/Amazon Fees - $200
Ideally, we'd love to make "Neon Milk" 12-15 songs in length (we have the songs!), and if we hit a goal of at least $5000, we can make this happen!
Stretch Goal 1 - Full-Length LP - $5000
Any more funds raised beyond that will go towards music videos, including more on-album skits, and spending more time to perfect a complete musical journey for you guys!
Okay, I'm Sold. Send Me Cool Stuff.
Well, what are you waiting for? Check out the rewards to your right. :)
Risks and challenges
All of the songs are already written and completed, and the studio is set up and waiting for us! We've already produced many songs there before, and even have some proof of product above for your listening pleasure.
Our estimates for production costs and shipping are modest to meet our goal, and we are prepared to take a hit if it means we under estimated. Time is the only risk factor here, but we are VERY confident that by April 2014 we will be able to have "Neon Milk" in your hands!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
