In early December, Kurtzman started penning a book about the Denver Broncos' historic 2013 season. While the Broncos were beat-down in Super Bowl XLVIII by the Seattle Seahawks, the book is certainly relevant and important.
Recently, Kurtzman was contacted by a publisher, Mascot Books, who wants to publish the book. This is incredibly exciting news, indeed.
Of course, as is the case with publishers, they wanted to change things up a bit, which is completely fine since they have all the experience in selling books. The title has changed and it will be a look at the entire John Elway/Peyton Manning era, complete with a look forward for the team into the 2014 season.
And, since we're working with a publisher -- the original plan was to simply publish on Amazon through eBooks -- we have to come up with a great deal of cash to pay them for all the wonderful work which will take place. Mascot Books has already professionally designed the cover, they've already provided us with a tremendous title, they'll perform final edits, they'll press the book with a wonderful hardbound cover as well as create eBooks online, and they'll also help market by selling on their website as well as in the stores they have a connection with, Barnes & Noble and COSTCO.
The catch is, all that work costs money. Lots of money.
We want to print 2,000 copies for a first run, which will cost $9,600. If and when we sell them all, it will mean a nice little profit, which will almost certainly be reinvested back into printing more copies, another 5,000 ($15,500).
This is where you come in! We need you to become involved, to donate towards publishing! Our goal is $5,000.
Anything and everything you donate will go towards publishing and it will all be beneficial!
If you can't donate at this time, that's fine, but please take a few seconds to share this project on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest) as well as in emails to people you think may be interested.
Thank you so much,
Risks and challenges
One challenge is the timeline, which is why the funding is being done now and wraps up quickly, in the middle of May. We're working with very time-sensitive material as the book describes 2011 through the present, what we call the "Elway - Manning Era." In order to be successful, we need to release the book at a time of year when football is at the forefront of fans' minds, which is why our publisher -- Mascot Books -- has decided on mid-July, just before training camp, as the release date. Before they can get to work, though, we must raise the funds needed. Of course, we also understand and anticipate a healthy back-and-forth with Mascot Books in the editing process, which is included in our timeframe. No matter what, we will see this project -- creating the book -- through to the end. It's a lifelong goal of mine and the product has evolved greatly into what could be something special.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
