What is the Panda Bar and how did it come to be?
One day I was holding a store bought panda plush and the black band around the middle separating the two white sections reminded me of an ice cream sandwich. Yes, I do have a bit of an ice cream obsession! After this inspiration, I created chocolate and strawberry panda bars to sell as prints and on various products like buttons and magnets. When I posted the panda bar design in an art community that I belong to on Facebook, it got very positive feedback. As this is one of my simpler designs, I thought that this could translate well into a plush.
Finished plush will measure 6" long, 4" wide and 3" thick. They will have embroidered eyes and bodies made of super soft minky fabric.
Why do I need help?
I sell at anime cons and have always wanted to have plushies to offer my customers. I’m always seeking new ways to expand Kimchi Kawaii and let’s face it, cute plush are pretty irresistible. I have sewn various plush by hand, but I am unable to keep up with demand on my own. Backing this project will allow me to expand my products that I sell both at anime cons and through my online shop with Storenvy.
Getting a plush manufactured is a rather expensive process. I have already put down a significant deposit to get both the chocolate and strawberry panda bar prototypes done. I now need to raise the rest of the money to send these guys to full production. I will be using Gann Memorials, a well-established company who many artists use for their plush. The prototypes are complete so now I just need the help of friends/fans like you. My goal is to have 500-1000 plushies created.
What is the process and timeline?
Since the panda bar prototypes are already completed, production will commence shortly after the successful close of this campaign in June. Estimated manufacturing time is about 30-48 working days. Shipping will take several weeks as the panda bars will be traveling to the U.S. from overseas. All artwork for the rewards is completed. Rewards will be produced by companies I already work with for regular Kimchi Kawaii inventory. I will send out backer rewards as soon as the product and awards arrive. My goal is to keep you posted along the way and to aim for rewards to be in backer hands by September/October of this year.
I have created some fun, new artwork that will be exclusive to this Kickstarter project. Backers will be able to get fun items from the Ice Cream Bear series featuring Raspbeary Sorbet, Strawbeary Ice Cream, Root Bear Float and Blackbeary Froyo. There will also be three non-exclusive designs - Beary Sundae, Polar Bar and of course, the Chocolate and Strawberrry Panda Bars.
Backers from the $10 level and up will receive the exclusive ‘I Melt for Panda Bars’ 2.5" pinback button.
Backers will be able to choose from the Ice Cream Bear designs and receive these various items:
- 1.5" acrylic pins
- Vinyl stickers measuring approximately 3"x4"
- 2" acrylic magnets
- Custom digital artwork*
If we can reach $10,000 in funding, the Polar Bar 1.5" metal keychain will be unlocked and all backers at the $15 level and up will automatically receive the keychain.
If we go even further and reach $11,000 in funding, unisex screen printed
t-shirts featuring the chocolate panda bar will become an option.
At $20,500, the Polar Bar plush will unlock! All backers at the $35 and up levels will then have the option of a Panda Bar or Polar Bar (or a combo if backing at a multiple plush level).
*Digital Artwork Guidelines:
I will work with the backer to create a solid background, digital artwork in the Kimchi Kawaii style. Please do not ask 'I want you to draw [x] in [other artist's] style'. To comply with intellectual property, I will not draw fan art - i.e. characters from existing series/publications/etc. I will not draw themes of a sexual nature. Please keep it PG :) Requests for designs already in production as Kimchi Kawaii products are ineligible for request (ex. backers can not request the Beary Sundae design). I reserve the right to deny a theme/topic and will work with the backer to create a digital piece that falls within these guidelines. Artwork will be emailed and provided in digital format only. Any reproduction in tangible format is the full responsibility of the recipient.
Risks and challenges
Gann Memorials are a well-established company for manufacturing plushies. However, like any collaborative project, production delays with the factory or shipping delays may occur, especially for overseas manufacturing. Zap Creatives, based in the United Kingdom will be producing my acrylic pins and magnets and could also be affected by shipping delays. If these should happen, I will notify all backers through updates here and by email.
As the Polar Bar plush is the highest stretch goal, these will take 2-3 months longer than the Panda Bars which are ready to go into production at the successful completion of this campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
