One-woman vocal army Janice Whaley is pressing 250 limited edition collector's vinyl.
Guess what! James Roday and I are hitting radio stations beginning Oct. 22! He is a Producer of The Smiths Project and a big fan of my music. He wanted to sing a song with me to help spread the word about my art far and wide. (What a guy!) Watch/listen the video for the full story...
I’ve been setting up this kickstarter for a while. This WAS going to be a much more elaborate affair to ask for your help getting my first marketing campaign off the ground. It included incentives that were a lot more time-consuming and stressful for me, but thankfully, plans have changed. I've hired marketing guru Kevin Sutter from Tazmoe Music and I'm so excited to work with him! He's worked with some major major talent so this is BIG!
Rather than canceling the kickstarter & all the incentives I've been planning, I just took out the stressful ones, lowered the goal and now, this can just be for fun, to do something that you’ve asked me for. VINYL. If you want it, let's do it! We will make it together and YOU pick the songs! This will be a special, one-time pressing of 250 records that will be made right on the heels of my first major marketing campaign. So... you know, you’ll be able to use this as proof that you heard of me first. Or at least you'll be a part of a fantastic group of people that I've been privileged to know since I started putting my music out into the world in 2010.
This will be the only place to order the vinyl pressings. If there are any left over, the remaining vinyl will be locked away until Record Store Day April 20, 2013 where they will be available in Bay Area record stores such as Amoeba, Rasputins, and Streetlight. If MORE than 250 people were to kickstart this, I will make enough for everyone and that will be that. There will be none left to sell in record stores or online, so if you want one, get it here while you can.
Something NEW For Everyone
I’m setting this up like a store with lots of different configurations of the same items. Please read the backer levels carefully since there are many different groupings. If you’ve already been a super supporter on my previous kickstarters (thank you!!) and you only want the new single for $1, that option is there for you. Even then, you’ll get it before everyone else. Awesome! If you want just the records or just a T-shirt, those options are there. And remember, everything comes with a download of We Need You, Ideas As Opiates, and in most cases LOTS of additional downloads!
Lots of Music Downloads For Cheap!
This is the absolute best place to buy my music right now. It's a much better deal than iTunes or my Bandcamp store. Once the kickstarter goal is reached I'll start sending out DL links:
- Everyone who kickstarts $1 or more will get a digital download of We Need You and Ideas As Opiates (both mastered by Grammy-winning a cappella engineer, Bill Hare!)
- Everyone who kickstarts $5 or more will ALSO get a digital download of my new 12-track album Patchwork Life. That’s 14 songs for $5! You’ll get this in addition to which ever backer level you pick.
- All vinyl and physical CDs come with the corresponding digital download.
***Apologies for the low-quality/distorted music in this video. My video editing software was free for a reason. It sucks. The real downloads sound amazing, though!
Super cheap- only half of the actual shipping price in most cases. Just add the amount listed under your backer level to your total pledge. It's a minimal amount for you, but on my end it would add up to be a huge expense if I were to cover it all on my own. International orders are getting an especially good deals on this. And yes, I will ship to any country!!!
What Will The Smiths Project Vinyl Look Like?
The Panic-inspired graphic, created by the amazing The Mystery Parade using a photo by my partner in crime, Josh Cadwising, will be the cover and the vinyl will be the same sexy shade of turquoise as the font.
What Will Be On The Jacket?
YOUR NAME! You’ll be listed on the back of the record jacket under the titles of Thank You, Executive Producer or Producer. I want your name all over it because YOU made this possible.
What Songs Will Be On The Smiths Project Vinyl?
IT'S UP TO YOU! If you’re backing to get the vinyl, you get to vote for favorite tracks. I’ll send you a link to the poll and I’ll be putting as many of the highest-rated tracks as I can fit onto the record (45 minutes max). We will make it a fun thing we do together over the next month. Expect ongoing kickstarter updates!!
Limited Edition FLEXI-VINYL Pressing of ‘We Need You’
Being able to create a song requested by Simon Le Bon was a big deal for me. Duran Duran was the first band I ever went obsesso over when I was young. And then, to top it all off, Simon let me give a CD of the song to them in person! To help me celebrate this momentous occasion, I’ve decided to press 250 copies of ‘We Need You’ to flexi-vinyl. There is just no cooler way to present it. If you’re not familiar, these were used as magazine inserts and promos back in the 70-80s. They were out of production until Pirates Records in San Francisco began manufacturing them in 2010. Flexy-vinyl is making a comeback as a hot collectible among vinyl enthusiasts. They play and sound like records, only they’re flexible!
I loved these as a kid and I think everyone should have at least one in their collection. We Need You flexi-vinyl will be packaged in in a poly bag w/printed insert. And you can have your name on the insert under the title Thank You, Executive Producer, or Producer.
But Janice! I Want To Hear 'We Need You' Right Now!
I know you’ve been waiting… As soon as goal is met, I’m sending you the mp3. If that happens on day 3 of the kickstarter… YAY!
I want your names alllll over this stuff. Plus you'll get twitter and FB shout-outs & mentions on kickstarter video updates. At the end of the kickstarter, I’ll ask how you want to be listed on the following:
- All backers will be listed on a special thank you page of my website for making this happen.
- Vinyl backers get name credit on the vinyl they chose. If you pick both vinyl AND flexi-vinyl, you’ll get your name on both! High level backers get Executive Producer or Producer credits along with a basket-load of other great things.
Lyrics On An Old Record
Re-purpose, reuse, make art! I’ll engrave lyrics from my music or any personal message plus paint/draw/embellish/decoupage onto an old a record for you. Who knows what I'll do. If you've seen any of my other art you know it will be unique and interesting. Below was my first attempt with the a cheap soldering pen, but I'll be getting an actual heat engraving tool to make the writing really nice. These one-of-a-kind personalized art pieces will not be playable, but they'll look great on your wall. They will be packaged in a clear poly bag to keep 'em safe.
The Official Smiths Project T-shirt
I’m making an official Smiths Project t-shirt through a local printer who does amazing work. All men/women's sizes available. I like being able to support local businesses and I can’t wait to rock one of these:
I am releasing a series of eight 8"x12" photographs taken by photographer Josh Cadwising (swank106) from the photo shoot used in The Smiths Project albums. I love these photos and think everyone should see them. Internet doesn't do these photos justice! They will be autographed by Josh and myself.
The Smiths Project Jewelry / Keychain
1" x 3/4" picture embedded in resin. You choice of silver chain, black cord, or key ring.
Pirates Press will make 5 test pressings (without graphics & labels) of the Smiths Project vinyl and We Need You flexi-vinyl so that I can be sure they will play correctly. I’ll listen to them all, and then give the final ok for them to press the entire order. I am keeping one, and you can own one of the other four!
Keeping It Local
The vinyl will be pressed by Pirates Press of San Francisco, T-shirts from A-Game in San Jose, photographs printed at Photoworks in San Francisco. Any remaining vinyl will be sold in Bay Area record stores to support Record Store Day, April 20, 2013. THEN- and only then- if there are still some left, I’ll sell them online through my music store at Bandcamp.
Sharing Is Caring
This is a 30 day kickstarter so it's
important to get the word out there fast to let everyone have a chance
to participate. Even if you're not able to back this project, please
spread the word! It all helps!

Why another kickstarter?
I have been given the gift of an exact amount of time that I can use to make music and turn my dream into a career. I am making the most of it by working my beehive off to make music I'm proud of. The reason for several kickstarters is because I've done A LOT in a
short amount of time- 85 songs in under 3 years. I don't have the
luxury of putting out an album every 3 years, nor would I like the idea
of making you wait years to hear something new. Together with all of you who believe in what I am doing, we have been making albums. Because of your support in the last two years, I have a 6-CD box set of the 71-track Smiths Project, AND an original album under my belt. WOW!
I'm not able to make albums on my own, but with your support the alums are being made and you are giving me the gift of being able to retain 100% control of my art. It means the WORLD to me to put your names in my albums and make personalized & unique backer rewards for you. These CDs are made with love by people who care about what I'm doing rather than a label who, after all my hard work, would take song ownership away from me and only be interested in making a profit off me. And of course, none of that profit would actually reach me. You know, crowd-funding isn't actually new. The difference is, it used to be the record company asking for money via cd sales, concerts, etc (and keeping it!) but now, the artist has a voice and a say in their own career. The days of record companies exploiting artists behind the scenes are gone, baby. Dinosaur times. Power to the people.
That being said, I don't want to wear my fans out. If you have backed other projects, and can't do this one, it's totally ok. I still love you! I was going to cancel the entire kickstarter but fans said they want vinyl, so here we are! If you want one, grab it. If enough people want vinyl, we will make vinyl! I am willing to do the work to make this happen if it's what you want.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
