The Pirate Deck - A Quick Card & Coin Game for All Ages
Strategically use pirate cards to board a ship and steal treasure by matching card icons. Games take only 10-30 minutes to play.
I developed "The Pirate Deck" as a game to play with my own children, but through play-testing I discovered it appealed to middle school students and grownups as well. (My wife even loves playing it!) The games are quick and lead you to want to play a second round. While this is a light game, there is strategy involved in order to make the best use of the cards in your hand and complete as many coin icons as possible. Pirate cards can be added to the ship in specific locations, replace other pirates, or be removed from the ship entirely (with adjacent cards being pushed together to close the gap). A variety of other cards add another layer of interest and player interaction to the game.

This Kickst-ARRR-ter campaign will help fund the creation of new, uniform artwork, and for the publication of the game itself. When I created this game, I used graphics pulled from the internet as temporary place holders for my play-testing decks. To take this game to the next level, new professional artwork is required. The artist who will help us accomplish this is Nick Gowman, whose pirate illustrations stood out from the rest:
Once we meet our minimum funding goal, I'll be listing some stretch goals that would be great to achieve. These include things like bonus cards, custom plastic coins, and an upgrade in card stock.
For pledge levels, I've arranged there to be two different versions of "The Pirate Deck." The first version is the basic version, the one that's more likely to be for sale in the future. This comes with the Pirate Deck of 54 poker-sized cards, 25 standard plastic coins, a pouch to keep them in, and a two-piece box. For the deluxe version, the plastic coins will be upgraded to metal coins created by Conquistador Games.
Once we meet our minimum funding goal, I'll be listing more stretch goals that would be great to achieve.
"This is a versatile game that allows adults and children to play together. It has enough strategy to be played with only adults. There are not enough strong games for kids 6 to 15. This game fills a gap that is lacking in tabletop gaming. The kids that tested this game went back to it over and over again!" - Table Tested.com
"That was a lot of fun!" - a 7th grade student
"I really like the mechanism of matching up coins – it’s a lot like a puzzle as you try to figure out how to maximize your cash intake. It’s fun, and definitely good for its target audience." - Boards and Bees
"Interesting mechanic." - a BGG reviewer
"We really enjoyed it - looking to back this as soon as it is available to back!" - Table for Two Show
"My children love stealing treasure from me." - a BGG reviewer
"Let me tell you, this is a fun game. It's easy to learn, has a surprising amount of strategy for such a simple game, and you will have a blast playing it." - Kickstarter Awesome List
"This is a fun family game. I see this more for the younger kids, ages 7 to about 13 with their friends and/or parents. The spacial recognition aspect of the game is very good with the matching of the coins to score, so the players have to think about what cards they play. It is quite fun and entertaining." - To the Table
"Can we play again?" - one of my 6-year-olds

Risks and challenges
Once this project is funded, the main impediment will be the time it will take for the artist to create almost 60 new illustrations (of which 11 have been completed before the launch of this campaign). To that end, I have pushed my delivery estimate farther than I would like, to December 2014, in order to allow time for the creation of the artwork and for the production of the game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
