Dear Brown Girl,
You Have the Ability to Change the World!
As a teacher, back-to-school season is probably one of my favorite times of the year. Fresh school supplies, energetic students entering the doors and best of all, seeing my own daughter walk in the doors excited to learn something new.
As a kid, however, Kamaria sees back-to-school completely different than I do. Each year, we spend hours rummaging through the back-to-school supplies in hopes of seeing a character that resembles her. A character that not only that matches her caramel complexion but one that has some of the same interests as Kamaria does. For instance, a girl surrounded by all things STEM, or a girl completely in love with God, even a girl who doesn't like pink but loves music, and we can't forget a girl who is not afraid of being the BOSS. Well, after becoming frustrated while shopping, Kamaria was inspired to do just that! Create a line of brown girls that would celebrate the beauty, intelligence, and uniqueness of brown girls.
Launching in January 2016, Kamaria decided that instead of a party, she wanted me to give her money to start her own business. She wanted to start Brown Girls' Stationery so that other young brown girls would not have the same problem that she has faced since her early elementary school days.
Over the last year, we have supplied over 200 backpacks to brown girls all of the world! We have also been featured on Black Moms Blog, Blavity, and ABC News Houston for our backpacks.
With your support, we hope to utilize the funds to reach even more brown girls and supply them with not only backpacks but other necessary products needed for a successful school year. From backpacks to lunchbags/lunchboxes, umbrellas, notepads, notebooks, stickers, and planners.
As a mother, I realize how important it is for my daughter to see her image on different products. That is why I am so supportive of her business. Kamaria often spends her free time (after school and ballet practice) handwriting thank you notes for each sale made.
Brown Girls' Besties Club
Each person that purchases one of our products is automatically our "Bestie!" We love to see the pictures on social media and we love hearing from other educators and parents how the positive images of brown girls on our products have changed their daughters' lives.

Risks and challenges
While every project faces challenges and there is always a risk involved, over the last year, we have found that our risk to be low. Each of our brown girl designs have already been complete and we have successfully shipped over 200 backpacks over the last year. One of the challenges that we foresee, just like any other retailer is damaged products. We can proudly say that out of 200 backpacks shipped and 100 umbrellas, we have only had returns on 3 backpacks and 6 umbrellas. We pride ourselves on providing quality products at affordable rates.
Another potential challenge is the delivery of our products. We often place our orders with the manufacturers as they come in, so shipping can take anywhere between 10-20 business days. Our goal is to use the funds to purchase backpacks to store with us so that shipping can be cut down to 1-3 business days while keeping the same quality and low price.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
