Gamers at Indiecon 2012 play the prototype of Lone Wolf - The Board Game

Lone Wolf came to life as a fantasy gamebook series first published in the 1980's written by Joe Dever and illustrated by Gary Chalk.  Joe and Gary collaborated on the first eight gamebooks before going their own ways.

Gary Chalk's influence is known across literature and gaming.  As an artist, he specializes in children’s and fantasy illustration, bringing light to such beloved series as Redwall.  He also illustrated and created components for games such as HeroQuest, Talisman, and 1st edition Space Hulk, and created full games including Cry Havoc, Battlecars (with Ian Livingstone) and the recent Gun Dogs app (with Jamie Wallis).

And 30 years ago Gary Chalk designed his own wargame/board game version of Lone Wolf.  Today, after much playtesting and revision, he would like to ask your support in bringing you the Battle for Magnamund, also known as Lone Wolf - The Board Game.

. . . Or, as one of us put it in this essay:

"In those books, heroes weren't championed by 'fighters' and 'magic-users'--no, they called on monks and border rangers.  There was a shocking minimum of green dragons, green-skinned goblins, and trolls with green blood that regenerated for no clear reason--instead there were shapeshifters, dark knights, and ships of drowned sailors that rose in undeath."

We hope to start from the basic game put forth by Gary Chalk and, with your support, expand it to cover the breadth of that amazing world.

Battle for Magnamund is a fantasy wargame for two or more players.  Each battle pits good against evil, and the core set sees the Human forces of Sommerlund in war against the Giaks, murderous grey-skinned humanoids bred in the infernal city of the Darklords.  Players may control either an entire army or a single brigade on one side at a time.  The goal is to allow you to re-create any battle or scenario from the classic Lone Wolf books, and the game comes with pre-made scenarios to start you on your way.

The core game set consists of flat cardboard figures (3 mm thick and die-cut) in a plastic base, played on card maps that are grid-based and modular.  The maps are the same material as in Cry Havoc, a previous (and popular) game of Gary's.  In addition to being fun, Battle for Magnamund is a showcase for Gary Chalk's inimitable 2-D artwork: all components are illustrated by hand.

After 40 years of wargaming, Gary Chalk has tried to boil the game rules down to the simplest, fastest system it can be.  All combat is resolved by a single throw of percentage dice: this means that if you're firing with a unit of 5 figures or 50, you will only need to roll dice once to work out the number of casualties.

How do you know what to roll?  Each race has unique strengths and weaknesses reflected in the statistics on its Play Sheet.  The core set will have three of these sheets and more may be added in expansions.  For example, all Human figures use the same Play Sheet, and so if you are playing "the forces of good" you will find almost everything you need to play is condensed on one brief Play Sheet.

The rulebook describes footsoldiers and leaders, both Human and Giak (and the lizard-man Gourgaz!).  It also includes the first "expansion" to come after early playtests: magicians and magic.  Any player can interrupt play at any time to cast a spell, including traditional lightning bolts as well as more esoteric effects.  The core set includes a small deck of Spell Cards to speed gameplay, just as with the Play Sheets.

In addition, the game has adventure and character progression elements.  The player selects heroes (or monsters!) to lead each army or brigade.  These have special abilities listed on a Hero Card, divided into "Heroic Abilities" and "Evil Tricks."

Lone Wolf himself uses a third category of abilities, Kai Disciplines, such as Mind Over Matter which allows him to knock projectiles out of the air with his mind.  You select disciplines for your Kai Lord and if you survive then you may grow your character between battles.

All in all, the rules shape an incredibly fast yet detailed simulation of the world of Lone Wolf.  See the FAQ section for some examples, or see for yourself: download the (beta) rulebook right here, and download our print-and-play scenario The Fight for Fogwood right here!

Photos on this page are from prototypes.  Final versions will all be sturdier material.  Almost all of your funding will go into printing the first run.  The product is nearly complete, so development costs are low, and the only remaining costs are shipping (which we've included in your pledge levels) and paying the people involved.  We hope to launch the game at Indiecon 2015 in the UK next November.

At launch, there will be two armies and a total of 80 playing pieces in the core set:

The above will come to be if we fund the basic game.  We also hope to add many expansions if we go beyond our basic funding goal.  On the happy day that we pass the goal, we will start marching through stretch goals.  We plan to expand Lone Wolf - The Board Game with:

  • More armies themed around the different civilizations of northeast Magnamund.  Vassagonia, anyone?  The Dwarves of Bor?
  • Variations within existing armies.  The core set Giaks are of the Gorakim regiment, "The Animals."  What of the other Giak regiments . . . ?
  • Monsters, monsters, monsters!  They also "lead" your army, and who wouldn't want to follow a Helghast into battle?
  • And more!  (Not just figures!)

To learn more about our funding and stretch goals, see the links and graphic at the top!

See below for illustrations of what you can get with your pledge, then see the listings on the right for various combinations.  With one important exception (the "thanks" at $55 or more), pledge levels are not cumulative and each description states everything you will receive (most pledges include the game set itself).  Shipping worldwide included - note that Greywood Publishing will ship from the UK.

The following are the products we're trying to "kickstart."  With your help, these will go on sale to the rest of the world if and when the project succeeds.

If we reach stretch goal funding, Kickstarter backers may receive thank-you gifts.  These will include FREE cardboard figures from our expansion sets.  The figures will also go on sale after the campaign.

If you want even more components, see the "add-ons" section just below!

You already know Gary Chalk.  Just scroll back to the top if you forgot.  He's a very creative person who drew or designed every game bit on this page.  He also loves to paint miniatures!

Jamie Wallis of Greywood Publishing last worked with Gary Chalk on Gun Dogs.  He insists that he is not important, but in truth he is the graphic designer on Lone Wolf - The Board Game.  Greywood Publishing will be handling price quotes, publication, and distribution of the game.

Richard S. Hetley and Mikaël Louys of Megara Entertainment have brought a number of classic gamebooks back to life for modern day, including on Kickstarter.  They are Gary's Kickstarter management team, and also will edit the rulebook and participate in other aspects of development.

And how about you?  Would you like a closer role in helping this board game come to life?  You can pledge above and use these images to spread the word far and wide!

. . . And we all THANK YOU MANY TIMES for your support.  Let's make Lone Wolf - The Board Game the best it can be!

Risks and challenges

We already have all the connections and quotes necessary to produce the game. After all, we've already prototyped it. The vast majority of backer funding will go into printing the first run, with a minority going into shipping and paying the people involved.

From our other successful Kickstarter projects, we've learned the biggest challenges with such a "nearly-complete" game are "time" and "changing costs." Anything like preparing expansion figures will take time, not to mention time and money spent if there are defects. A large volume of orders will delay the average backer's delivery. Even a "realistic" funding goal can only allow finite room for error.

We have done our best to accommodate challenges in our plans. We intend to be up-front completely about the process and to give ample notice of any changes in development or production.
