About

Produced by Immersive Technology Studios, art, photography, nature, and technology all come together in this ambitious Virtual Reality (VR) art project. Through the immersive power of Virtual Reality, backers of this project will be able to virtually explore Vermont State’s five tallest mountain peaks, including: Mount Mansfield (4,393’), Killington Peak (4,236’), Mount Ellen (4,081’), Camel’s Hump (4,081’), and Pico Peak (2,958’). Through a successful Kickstarter campaign we hope to raise enough to travel throughout the “Green Mountain State” capturing Vermont’s picturesque panoramic mountaintop views in high-definition HDR images, bringing them back to our headquarters in Barre, VT, and assembling them into the finest interactive 360-degree landscape viewing experiences Vermont has ever had to offer.

Virtual reality opens the door to places that might seem difficult or impossible to experience in person. We are working with some of the industry leaders in Virtual Reality to create highly realistic, interactive and immersive environments that transport you to the top of the world - or at least the top of Vermont’s tallest mountains. All “backers” of this project will be provided with a free Virtual Reality headset that can be used to explore the environments we hope to capture.

Nicknamed “The Green Mountain State”, Vermont is regularly ranked one of the best places to live in the country. One of the greatest reasons for this is due to the abundant access to nature Vermonters enjoy. There is no feeling in the world like sitting atop a mountain after a long day’s hike, and enjoying the view from 4,000’ up. We want to share this experience with others—both so that you can enjoy the views for yourself, and so you might be inspired to lace up your hiking boots, and explore creation.

We are still working on refining the technology that will empower us to build these realistic landscape experiences, but in the meanwhile, we invite you to check out some of our demo scenes by visiting any of the following links. Please keep in mind our technology and processes are still being developed, and are currently in their fledgling stages. The final product we aim to create (and we hope you’ll consider backing) will be of a much higher quality, and will be better produced than these proof-of-concept samples. If you happen to have a VR headset already, you can click on “VR Mode” in the top right corner to try out the Virtual Reality features!

Mount Mansfield is the highest mountain in Vermont. The mountain gets its name because when viewed from the east its summit ridge resembles the profile of a human face, and the names of its prominent features reflect this: Adams Apple (4,060'), Chin (4,393', highest point), Nose (4,062') and Forehead (3,940'). For about 2.3 miles (from the Adams Apple to the Forehead) the Long Trail is almost entirely above the tree line, making it the longest (if not the only) stretch of alpine zone in Vermont.

Killington Peak is the second highest summit in the Green Mountains. It is located east of Rutland in south-central Vermont. A ski resort, Killington Ski Resort, nicknamed "the beast of the east”, is located on the mountain. Killington is a stop on the Long Trail, which shares a portion of its route with the Appalachian Trail. Traveling southbound on the Trail, it is the last 4,000 feet (1,200 m) peak until Virginia.

Camel's Hump is Vermont's third-highest mountain and highest undeveloped peak. Because of its distinctive profile, it is perhaps the state's most recognized mountain, featured on the state quarter. It is part of the Green Mountain range. Along with its neighbor to the north, Mount Mansfield, it borders the notch that the Winooski River has carved through the ridgeline of the Green Mountains over eons. The hiking trails on Camel's Hump were among the first cut in the Long Trail system, and Camel's Hump remains a popular summit for through- and day-hiking. The mountain is part of Camel's Hump State Park.

Mount Ellen is located in the Green Mountains in Washington County. Mount Ellen is flanked to the south by Cutts Peak (4,020 ft / 1,225 m), and to the north by Stark Mountain (3,662 ft / 1,116 m). The Long Trail, a 272-mile (438-km) hiking trail running the length of Vermont, traverses the summit ridge of Mount Ellen.

Pico Peak is a mountain located in Rutland County, Vermont. It is the northernmost summit of the Coolidge Range in the Green Mountains, and the second highest in the Coolidge Range after Killington Peak. Pico Peak is flanked to the south by Ramshead Peak, and to the north faces Deer Leap Mountain across Sherburne Pass. The peak's name may stem from the Abenaki for "the pass/opening" or indeed from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "peak", Pico. Seen from Sherburne Pass the summit resembles a cone.

Risks and challenges

Several key components need to come together in order for this project to become a reality. Weather, Equipment (and Redundancy), Hiking Conditions, and Viewing Technology are all key factors, so we’d like to take a moment to elaborate on each of our concerns.

WEATHER:
Unfortunately one of the biggest factors in this project is getting the weather to cooperate. Just because the weather is nice and sunny at ground level doesn’t mean it is the same at an elevation of 4,400’ above sea level. Furthermore, weather conditions can change rapidly, and we fully anticipate multiple hikes in order to achieve the “perfect shot”. Since all of these locations are remote, a full day must be allocated just to travel to and from each—which means that if the weather is not perfect, or takes a turn for the worse, we may have to reschedule an entirely new day to shoot.

EQUIPMENT
As every good photographer knows, the outcome of your shoot is highly dependent on the equipment that you use. When shooting for Virtual Reality this is even more important. We plan on exploring the best equipment available to capture these environments for you. Right now we’re working with expensive, delicate, and heavy camera equipment, tripods, and mounts that will take a lot of effort to get to these locations. If anything is wrong, we can’t simple run back to the car to get a new battery. This means everything about our equipment needs to be not only dialed in, but also transportable, rugged, and dependable.

LOCATION
Vermont is one of the most beautiful locations on the earth. However some of the locations we are planning to capture in VR are highly remote, requiring hours of trekking at high altitudes and through the woods. Our team will need to be able to carry all of the camera equipment in addition to the normal hiking gear required for these types of hikes. In the event that conditions change rapidly, we will need to be prepared for whatever nature decides to throw our way.

TECHNOLOGY
Unlike other art and photography projects, this project will incorporate a significant amount of computer programming in order to complete the professional product that we plan on producing. We are currently working on developing a cross-platform solution that anyone will be able to use, regardless of their device. This means that even people without VR headsets will be able to explore these environments on their mobile phones, tablets, and computers. As you can imagine, this takes quite a bit of work—to get something that is compatible with both Android and iPhone, Macs and PCs, as well as cutting edge VR Headsets (including Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear, and Google Cardboard) isn’t as easy as it might seem. Despite the challenges, we feel confident in what we’ve been able to accomplish thus far, and look forward to taking things to the next level while sharing this project with you!
