ATTENTION: Because our backers have helped us reach our initial goal, we're in the spirit of giving more! For each NEW $25 donated to our campaign within the remaining days of our campaign run, you will receive a pair of Emowa socks.
Emowa is derived from the Yoruba phrase, "É mọ wá" (Eh-Mo-Wa). In English, this phrase is translated to mean, "You will know us."
Emowa sock's mission is to bring to life that uniqueness in all of us. Designing socks that highlight symbolic cultural textiles and art found in different cultures around the world, our message is simple: to inspire others to hold on to what makes them unique and highlight their richness and creativity that lie within. We do not believe in compromising our style and values to fit in. We celebrate the bold ones, the brave ones, the cultured ones. Step into Emowa socks and step boldly into the world. Be Bold! Be Known!
Join the movement as we build our tribe one pair of socks at a time….
THE DESIGNS (lots more on the way -and we mean, lots! Below, are just a few of our first releases, which we call Phase 1).
- The Ghanaian name for this textile is Nsu Bra, an Akan word meaning water well. The tiny dots are meant to resemble the ripples that are formed after water has been fetched
- In Togo, it is known as “Gbedze,” which references the straw hats worn as protection from the sun by royalty.
- A design inspired by the fabric mostly worn by the Igbo tribe of Nigeria. Its is significant because the horses resemble the rearing horses on the Nigerian Coat of Arms, which symbolizes dignity and a quality of pride. The Y-like shapes have been attributed to represent the two main rivers that flow through Nigeria (Niger River & Benue River), which can also be seen on the coat of arms.
- In Ivory Coast,it is known as, “Je cours plus vite que ma rivale,” meaning, “I run faster than my rival."
- These socks draws inspiration from the prominent African textile known as Kente.
- It actually originates from the native land of the Akans, an ethnic group located in southern Ghana. Akans refer to the cloth as nwentoma, which translates to woven cloth. At the time of inception, it was the royal and sacred cloth worn during times of importance and was seen as the cloth of kings.
- Nigeria’s Igbo tribe call the original fabric mgbolodi, which means roots. Historically, plant roots are known to be highly medicinal and may be used to cure ailments.
- Metaphorically, it is referred to as legumes because just as legumes are known to enhance soil, it is said that when the fabric is worn or owned it can bring wealth and success to the owner or their family.
To keep things interesting, each design has a variety of unique colorways, which we plan on releasing periodically.
For example, check out some of our models below:
Emowa socks are designed from culturally inspired textiles and art from different cultures around the world. Our premium socks line are manufactured from high quality Egyptian cotton, consistently regarded as the highest quality cotton type produced in the world. Grown from the Gossypium Barbadese plant, the cotton is considered to be the best by many due to their extra long staples. Extra long staples make the fibers stronger, finer, and much softer on the skin.
Our regular socks line are produced from high quality combed cotton, which is breathable, durable, and free of toxins to keep the feet comfortable in your shoes throughout the day.
We have spent over a year researching and developing our socks to make sure we can produce the highest quality of socks possible. We worked with multiple manufacturers both in the U.S and abroad, until we felt confident that we had a manufacturer who could meet the high demands for producing Emowa socks.
We promise to deliver the best socks quality possible to our customers and shortcuts are unacceptable.
At the moment, our size range is 9-13. With adequate funding, we hope to add more sizes in the future to our selection.
We also plan to add kid sizes sometime in the near future.
As a backer, you will receive a notification at the conclusion of the Kickstarter which will ask for your preferred design and style before we ship your goods!
Below, are the two styles of premium quality t-shirt designs we have available. After this campaign, the shirts will not be available for purchase. Shirt sizes range from Small to 3XL.

COME ON GUYS!! LET'S GOOOO!!! "CAN'T STOP, WON'T STOP!" We are on a mission and our backers play a tremendous role! We plan to take this venture to the moon! As of now, we are focusing on our Africa collection because this is our strength. However, in the future, our plan is to widen the scope of our business to include other cultures by collaborating with other designers and artists. We say that to say this: by the time we've reached our potential, the only socks you guys will want to wear is Emowa. This is only the beginning, as there are lots more already designed. Check out Phase 4 products below.
Emowa was founded by visionaries. Three individuals who emigrated from Nigeria to the U.S. at a very young age. Early years of the transition was rough as we tried to fit into this new world we had found ourselves. We didn't speak like the other kids, we didn't dress like the other kids, and we surely weren't cool like the other kids. But as the years passed, we embraced our individuality, we embraced our differences, our African origin, and we forged ahead to embrace our culture.
It was from this deep area that EMOWA was created!
We realized we weren't alone! Others shared similar experiences as we did. Struggling to excel without losing our identity and conforming, we started to wear boldly expressive and culturally inspired socks and the reactions were overwhelmingly popular.
EMOWA Socks represent to us, as it does to others who admire our brand and product, a statement of self-expression, individuality, and cultural appreciation.
We didn’t just set out to create another meaningless commodity. We set out to inspire others to hold on to what makes them unique, without compromising their individuality. When you step into Emowa socks, you are stepping boldly into the world.
Our team is deeply committed to the EMOWA mission and the success of our socks in the hands, or should we say feet, of other visionaries.
Commitment to a better, bolder society!
We are actively working to partner with a charity organization that embodies the EMOWA mission! We believe everyone should be celebrated for their individuality and what makes them unique. Your donations will help EMOWA make impactful contributions to the charity organization of your choice.
Yup, that’s right! You get to decide where we should donate our time and effort to create a better, bolder society!
Inquiries will be made along with the notification you receive about your design and style selection.
