In the abandoned and uncharted spaces of the solar system a small group of daredevil pilots fly their spacecraft through dangerous race courses known as Circuits. Set up in advance by a shadowy group of scouts and bookies, each Circuit is unique. Some wind through planetary canyons, others through old mining tunnels bored through asteroids or through the swirling rocks of planetary rings. Racers must dodge obstacles as well as the weapons fire of their opponents to cross the finish line first to win fame and fortune!
Solar Circuit Racing is a sci-fi board game for 2 to 6 players. Each player takes the role of one of six different race pilots, each with his or her own unique ship and abilities, and tries to beat the other players across the finish line.
I really wanted to create a game where you feel like you're whipping through classic sci-fi locations at breakneck speeds. I wanted playing this game to feel like fighting your flight yoke for control as you carom off asteroids, dodge enemy weapons fire, or bounce down space station tunnels. This game does just that. It puts control of your ship squarely in your hands, and different racing styles will result in very different playing experiences.
The game takes place on a fully customizable course made up of location tiles. You can set up your course however you want to. Game duration and difficulty can be adjusted by changing the number of tiles in the course and the number of difficult obstacles. The game will come with several pre-designed courses as well, so you can jump right into the action.
Some tiles offer you different options about how to proceed. In planetary rings for example, you can choose to weave around each rock, which is hard to do but spares you from taking any damage, or you can plow through and hope your armor protects you from the automatic damage you'll take. Each of the included racers is suited to a different racing style, from big, slow, heavy ships that smash through everything in their path to nimble but fragile ships that rely on their agility to survive.
Moving into a tile with an obstacle requires a piloting roll. Failing the piloting roll results in something bad happening, like smashing into an asteroid or scraping a wing along a canyon wall. Once you pass the roll, you can advance into the space and move on.
Each turn, you will have to manage your limited engine power, and make decisions about how to spend it. Engine power can be used to advance through the course, to evade enemy weapons, and to make maneuvering through obstacles easier. Spend too much power on maneuvering and your opponents will jump into the lead, too much on advancing and you'll splatter against the obstacles.
Right now the game is in final playtesting phase. Kian Ng (www.artofkian.com) is on board as our artist, and a manufacturer has been selected. Kickstarter funding will cover art and manufacturing costs for the first production run. The dominoes are all lined up, but I need your help to knock them down and get this game into production. If this project gets funded beyond 100%, it will allow a larger production run and the inclusion of goodies like free expansions.
Solar Circuit Racing is a great game, and a lot of fun to play, but it needs your help. Without your pledge, this game will never make it off the drawing board and onto players' tables. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the race!
