We met our initial goal!
Thanks to everyone who has pledged thus far, we met our $4,000 goal within just 27 hours! I am absolutely blown away-- thank you SO much for all the generous pledges.
We've decided to set a stretch goal of $8,000, double the goal we started with. The additional funding will substantially raise the quality of our upcoming building projects. In addition, some of the extra money will go toward purchasing some new instruments for the studio; we've got our eyes on a Juno-106 analog synthesizer, a Fender Precision Bass, and a new bass amplifier.
We truly appreciate your pledges! If you're unable to pledge, we'd be thrilled if you'd consider sharing the campaign via social media and/or telling the musically-inclined people in your life about the discounted studio time we're offering. Thank you!
My name is Andrew Oedel and I’m the owner and engineer at Ghost Hit Recording in Holyoke, Massachusetts. I opened GHR in December 2016 and was promptly sucked into a crazy, beautiful, sometimes terrifying vortex of intense record-making.
Throughout the last year I’ve held onto one goal, which is to offer the highest level of recording and post-production services to musicians I love without obliterating their life savings.
I’m kind of shocked, and definitely super excited, to say that the studio has been booked solid in its first year of being open. I’ve had the honor of working with so many amazing musicians this year, including Heather Maloney, The Sweetback Sisters, Hammydown, The Meadows Brothers, Calico Blue, OroborO, Bay Faction, Royal Street, Little Busy, Ryan Hommel, Wise Old Moon, Sleepy Monks, Crash the Owl Party, Nikita, Janel Munoa, Pax Noble, Fish House, and so many more insanely talented people.
To me, this can only mean one thing: there is a need for a studio like Ghost Hit Recording in our area. This is why I want to start 2018 off with a concerted effort to make GHR as good as it can possibly be. So here we are, with the announcement of our Kickstarter campaign:
Ghost Hit Recording: 1st Anniversary Fundraiser
Ghost Hit Recording is a beautiful, open-concept studio space-- 2,000 sq ft of brick and hardwood on the 4th floor of an old silk mill. It is as cozy as it is inspiring.
Building a studio into this gorgeous room has been insanely fun: we built a fantastic sounding 15’x15’ iso room, refinished the original maple floors, replaced the windows, and made a homey lounge, kitchenette, and bathroom.
So how could GHR get any better? There are still some projects that need to get done to help the studio reach its full potential, including:
- Adding solid doors to the studio’s entrances. The two entrances to the studio are currently secured with sliding fire doors from 1895. We need heavy, airtight doors and insulated framing to improve the climate control and acoustic environment in the space.
- Finishing the window interiors, laying baseboard and trim in the iso room and bathroom, and finishing up with painting. I want this place to be as inviting as possible to help musicians feel comfortable and creative.
- Completing acoustic treatment in the iso room, live room, and control area. I love the way the studio sounds, but I think we can get even closer to acoustic perfection.
The money from this Kickstarter will go towards materials (most notably the doors) and the skilled labor required to finish these projects!
How We’ll Make it Happen
I am committed to Ghost Hit Recording’s democratic, working-class ethos and the core operating principle of keeping studio time affordable. That is why rates at GHR are kept comparatively low: $45/hr, $350/day, including my services as engineer.
This Kickstarter offers the special opportunity to book studio time at a steep discount. If you’re interested in getting into a professional studio environment for an insanely low rate, this campaign is a great way to make that happen.
Days booked via Kickstarter rewards are discounted by a whopping $100. There is an even larger discount when booking three days or more. You can book as many days as you’d like, up to 10. The days never expire and can be gifted to anyone. Simply add a note when you make your pledge and we’ll know how much time you’d like to book.
We’ll also be offering discounted half-day sessions, as well as one-on-one workshops. These workshops are going to be awesome: two hours booked during which we can work on topics including recording, mixing, and production.
We won’t be prioritizing non-Kickstarter clients-- bookings made are first come, first served. We will work to make scheduling as easy as possible!
We’re also offering some awesome rewards for folks who would like to contribute to the campaign but aren’t necessarily interested in studio time.
Even though larger, more expensive commercial studios are declining, fairly-priced recording studios are still a crucial part of any music community. GHR seeks to be a valuable creative resource at the center of what is already a thriving music scene. With your help, I believe this will be a great sophomore year for Ghost Hit Recording. Thank you so much!
Risks and challenges
I've always operated under the guiding principle of keeping overhead low. I believe that this business philosophy mitigates the typical risks and challenges associated with owning a recording studio.
Ghost Hit Recording has had such an incredible first year in business. I am confident that 2018 will be even better with your help! Thank you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
