About

A space shooter for smartphones with a modern heart and soul. Take to the stars and explore a distant, post-apocalyptic galaxy brought to life in a lovingly crafted pixel art style.

Number 51 is 2D space shooter game currently planned for Android devices and if we can secure the funding, we’d love to release it for iOS.

Set in a galaxy ruined by a vicious pandemic and decades of war with marauding aliens, the hero is a youngster who stumbles upon an ancient star-fighter beneath the rubble of his abandoned city. It has the number 51 inscribed on its bonnet. Realising that he has the chance to leave his ruined planet behind, the youngster gets on-board begins an adventure to discover what’s beyond the stars.

You will journey with him aboard Number 51 and discover different and long lost worlds while enjoying classic space shooter action with modern mechanics.

Our vision was to take the best of the space shooter genre: addictive, fast paced sci-fi action, give the game a loose but engaging story for context and beautiful, up to date visuals. We wanted to distance ourselves from the hardcore, arcade gaming stereotype of space shooters and instead have the game appeal as an emotional experience: with a universe of its own, beautiful art and an atmospheric soundtrack.

The gameplay is inspired by the mechanics of both first person shooter and role playing games. We wanted to capture the timeless and addictive mechanics of those genres by having three base classes of ships you can use: 1. the all-rounder, Number 51, 2. the slow but high damage dealer, The Enforcer and 3. the lightning fast but fragile, Valkyrie.

 Combat:

You control your ship with your finger and it fires as you move. As you destroy enemies, your power gauge fills up - when it’s full, you can tap the screen to unleash your ship’s epic ultimate move.

Leveling up:

As you progress, you will level up, boosting your ship’s Attack, Speed and Amour. You will also gain skill points to invest in your ship’s upgrade tree, allowing you to customize gameplay: hit harder, make bigger explosions, get a stronger shield or move at light speed? All up to you to decide.

Enemies:

Your ships will be pit against the enemy fleets consisting of different species of enemies each with 4 classes of ships, grunts, fighters, tanks and speeders.

And of course, giant boss ships as well.

Lovingly put together, pixel by pixel, Number 51 is our dream of creating a free smartphone app with a beautiful and carefully designed art style. We’ve gone through months of brainstorming to create a unique art style that draws not just on what’s aesthetic but is built on having visuals that are thematic with our game’s lore, and create visual hierarchy and clarity for players. Here’s a glimpse of the process we’re going through to get to the finished product.

Number 51 will feature an epic original soundtrack which draws inspiration from our love for post-rock, ambient, and alternative rock music.

We are pair of brothers whose first gaming experience was with Ski Free on an IBM PC in the summer of 1998. Today we’re both artists and avid gamers and have finally decided to make a game of our own.

Sherwesh: director, writer, developer, artist 

Sherwesh is a graphic designer, who loves making visuals that make sense. He’s worked on web design and branding the last couple of years while studying for his Bachelor in Design (which you can check out here). He’s grown up immersed in rpg’s and sci-fi and fantasy novels, dreaming of creating his own world as well. Finally realising that he has enough know-how under his belt, he’s turned to making this dream a reality.

Jajwol: lead artist, composer 

Jajwol is a dreamer, with an eye for art and hands that seem to pick up instruments on their own. In his final year of high school, he’s been composing and recording his own music for over 2 years, hear some of it here. For his visual art major this year he’s been cranking out portraits, which you can check out on his DA plus other bits and pieces from over the years. Having worked out that creating his own game, isn’t as hard as getting to Challenger in LoL, he’s on fire for making Number 51 a reality.

We’ve brought this project to Kickstarter because we want to see Number 51 released on smartphones and to do that we need to purchase developer accounts and export modules for our game-making platform, Multimedia Fusion 2.

For Android, we would use your funding to purchase an Android export module for $100 and an Android developer account for $25.

For iOS, the main obstacle is that we need an Apple Computer in order to export Number 51 for iOS. We don’t have a mac, we’ve always been PC users so we would use your funding to purchase a reasonable second hand macbook for $500, an iOS developer subscription for $99 and an iOS export module for $145.

That’s a total of $869. Plus Kickstarter fees, the goal amounts to $950.

If we meet our goals, Number 51 will be released as a free app on the Apple and Google Play stores.

Stretch Goals

The dream is to release a smartphone app, but if we do smash our goals, we’d be happy to release a version for windows to play on your PC! That’s exciting because it’s a lot easier for us to include extra and custom content on the computer if that’s what you want us to do.

Risks and challenges

Time is our biggest enemy, both of us are using our very scarce amount of free time to work on this project. We're by no means experts or professional game developers yet - this is a learning experience for us and a chance to learn while we develop something awesome and something we want other people to enjoy.

That's why we're here on kickstarter and trying to promote this because we believe that we're not the only ones who'd love to see this project become real!

Developing number 51 isn't going to be easy, but we have people ready to help us, we're more than willing to learn all the ins and out of development and take feedback and criticism wherever we need it. So thank you for your support and being part of this adventure with us.
