What is Too Tired for Sunshine?
1. the experience of feeling so melancholy that not even a sunny day can raise your spirits. "Dorothea wanted to enjoy the crisp winter afternoon, but she was simply too tired for sunshine."
2. a fine art photobook by Tara Wray, hardcover, 140 pages, approximately 80 color images, 7x9, to be published by Yoffy Press, March 2018.
Ok, So What's the Book About?
Too Tired For Sunshine is a collection of photographs made largely in Vermont, beginning in 2011. Centered on rural landscapes, animals, and strangers, these deeply personal images reflect my state of mind during a period spent battling depression.
Drawn from daily life and wanderings, the photographs in this work focus on unsettling subjects - backyard slaughterhouses, melancholic dogs, disrepair in various forms - as well as depictions of isolation in people, animals, and objects. Often I find myself photographing subjects that appear drastically out of place, seemingly devoid of context.
Making photographs and sharing them allows me to get outside of my head and connect more fully with the world around me. I hope this work will inspire others to discover a sense of unreality in their own world.
How Will My Donation be Spent?
The money raised from this campaign will be used to produce an initial print run of 350 copies (with a stretch goal of 500) as a high quality, offset-printed, 7x9 inch, hardcover monograph made up of approximately 80 color photographs. Your donation will go towards the physical production of the book and producing the rewards.
While the Kickstarter goal is set at $12,000, we have some extra special design tricks up our sleeves. In order for us to realize our full (and totally rad) vision for this book, we need to raise $15,000. We hope you will help us reach not just our minimum goal but our stretch goal as well. It will be worth it. Promise.
The costs of producing high quality, limited print-run photography books are significantly high. Publishers often work together with artists to find ways to fund their books, hence here we are on Kickstarter! By pre-ordering a copy, making a contribution to the campaign, and spreading the word, you will help us reach our goal of bringing you this beautiful hardcover book.
A Note From the Publisher
We all experience and feel things differently. Some people take life in stride, staying even-keel, absorbing the good and the bad and moving forward at a steady clip. Others feel life wash over them in waves of emotion, with every sensory nerve on high alert, a floodgate waiting for a sign. While the first seems like a lovely way to move through the world, I am thankful every day for the second. Art would be pretty bland without some pathos and the creativity that complicated emotions inspire.
Too Tired for Sunshine puts a fine point on channeling the darkness into creative expression. We are both witnessing the process and experiencing the result. Tara Wray takes us on a visual and emotional journey with disarming humor that lets us lean in to the sadness a bit.
Yoffy Press is grateful to be associated with this project and thrilled to publish it. Kickstarter is allowing us to reach a wider audience and build community around this powerful work, while also raising the money needed to include the unique, experiential design elements that will elevate the book to a distinct art object.
Praise for Tara's Previous Work
"There is nothing more powerful in the arts than the expression of vulnerability. But there is also nothing more challenging for an artist than finding an eloquent way to express this vulnerability. In fear of being maudlin or downright dreary, many artists choose to look away. But in her films, photographs and writing, Tara Wray has consistently looked vulnerability in the eye. With Come Again, Tara Wray perfectly balances humor, pathos and tenderness in her exploration of the sensitive topic of aging and loneliness. There are few artist’s books I can think of that manage to be as simultaneously entertaining and heart-wrenching..."

Risks and challenges
Production costs represent the biggest challenge to photo book publishers and photographers. All of the work for Too Tired For Sunshine has been created, along with the interior layout and design. Working together with Yoffy Press, which has significant experience in the production of photobooks, we will publish this book by March 2018.
