About

                   The Ripple Effect

This full length collaborative album is a concept that I have wanted to bring to life for some time. What makes this album unique is the vast array of musical genres that are included and combined - epic orchestral, big band jazz, romantic ballads, progressive rock/metal, electronic dance music - there are no boundaries!

        Who is behind it?

I'm Steve Goldshein, composer and sound designer for media. I write music for games, film, and animation, and I have worked on the award-winning machinima series "Red Vs. Blue" by Rooster Teeth. I studied Electronic Production & Design at Berklee College of Music, with a specialization in Interactive Scoring and Audio Design for Games. I write a lot of very exciting, orchestral action music and incorporate synthesizers and digital production effects to give my music a modern edge. I first got into music as a jazz saxophone player, and my first foray into large ensemble writing was for jazz big bands. I use an Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI) as a MIDI controller, and performed on this instrument with Jeff Williams' Freelance Orchestra in Austin, TX at RTX 2012.

To get a taste of what the music I've been writing lately sounds like, here is my demo reel from the past year:

               Why do a Kickstarter?

I am using this Kickstarter campaign to raise funds so that I can make The Ripple Effect the most sophisticated and high quality production possible. I am also using it as a way to connect with backers who will expose me to exciting new musical horizons.

To bring this album to the next level, I have assembled a fantastic team of guest artists. I have worked with all of these great musicians in the past, and I know that they will be indispensable in the completion of this project.

               Who else is involved?

Liz Lohnes is a very talented singer who has performed at Gillette Stadium, TD Banknorth Garden, Six Flags, and many other venues. She will be providing vocals on several of the tracks.

Jeff Williams is the composer for Rooster Teeth, most notably for "Red Vs. Blue" and "RWBY." Jeff is a great keyboardist and guitarist, and he will be playing on some of the tracks. He also wears great pants.

Casey Williams, daughter of Jeff, is a stunning young vocalist who has appeared on his soundtracks.

Lamar Hall (aka OQuest) is a lyrical mastermind and resident hustler whose rapping skills have graced the soundtracks for "Red Vs. Blue" seasons 9 and 10. I am very excited to have him involved with The Ripple Effect.

Stephen Pierce is an expert guitarist who plays in a metal band called Replacire. He will be shredding some epic solos throughout the album.

Sam Bagala is a classically trained pianist from Boston Conservatory, he will be playing piano and keyboards on the album.

The Videri String Quartet is a group of musicians who perform arrangements of video game music. They have produced their own album of soundtrack covers, and also worked with Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory.

What do you get out of this?

I came up with some great ways to have the backers get personally involved in the direction of the album, and I am really excited to see what kind of ideas I get exposed to over the course of this production.

Anyone who donates $75 or more to this project will be an actual participant in the sound design process. Send recordings of yourself making any sound you want with your mouth (except singing) and I will use digital processing to completely transform these sounds into cool effects that will be used throughout the album. At the point of delivery, you will receive an audio file with what you sent me, what I turned it into, and where I used it

Backers of $250 or more have an opportunity to make a specific request for what they want to hear on the album: send me reference tracks (YouTube links or mp3s) and a description of what you want, and I will write a 90-second piece tailored to your personal guidelines, dedicated to you!

Alternatively, backers who donate $500 or more can take a story that they have written that never became the movie, play or game that it was supposed to, and have me write a 3 minute soundtrack that tells their story. Over the course of the project, these backers will have three Skype meetings with the composer to discuss the creative direction and progress of their personal track. The stories will be included in the digital liner notes, with full credit given to the authors.

             What are the funds for?

Every dollar raised will go towards the production of the album. This includes:

  • Live recording - hiring studio space, recording engineers, renting mics
  • Paying live musicians - the more I raise, the more people I can record!
  • Printing sheet music that will be used at the recording sessions
  • Studio upgrades - enhancing my capabilities with the best new software solutions for recording and production
  • Copyright fees
  • Digital Distribution fees (iTunes, Pandora, Spotify)
  • Kickstarter and Amazon fees

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge in completing this album is coordinating recording sessions. I want to record as many players as possible, but as the sessions get larger and larger, the more unforeseen problems get brought into the mix. However, I have helped to coordinate several large performances and recording sessions in the past, so I know the difficulties involved and how to avoid some of the most challenging scenarios.
Other delays I am likely to face are associated with the video compilation and editing portion of my backer rewards. I am planning to hire talented video editors who I have worked with before and know to be reliable, but again, the more outside help I bring in, the more potential problems arise because of schedules and similar conflicts. I know the people I want to work with to be reliable and professional, and don't anticipate many of the problems that typically arise in collaborative efforts.
