For future updates and developments please check the updates section here and our website and blogs for the game:
We intend to get this into print one way or another so if you follow our pages you will be able to keep track of the game development.
The Kickstarter is for two books - the full Fortunes Wheel core gamebook and the Witching Tales setting book.
We now have two free pdf adventures added for backers and via the Hidden room we will be offering more of these as a part of what we envisage as an ongoing relationship. The Hidden room will be set up as a free online forum as well as using social media, so every backer should be able to get access and benefit from ongoing extras as they are created. That means ongoing free pdfs, game secrets, discount offers for print backers and access to the designers once the project is completed. This is our way of saying thank you to our backers and is meant to offset what was for us a difficult decision that to be able to reliably complete the project we had to offer books at cost.
This Kickstarter does not involve creating a tarot deck (though if it goes well we may do another Kickstarter for a deck once everything is completed for this one and shipped to backers).
Fortunes Wheel is a role-playing and story game based around using Tarot decks to create an extra layer of story beyond anything you can do with dice. It has been designed to enable various different play styles from traditional role-playing through to referee free and improvised play. It is even possible to play Fortunes Wheel solo for ad hoc games created on the fly. It can even be used a creative writing tool.
The system can be used as an add on to other RPG systems, for your own game worlds (and you can use the system to create them as well) or one of the game worlds we will be making available especially for Fortunes Wheel.
The Kickstarter is for the Core Fortunes Wheel game system book and for a setting book you can play it in. The setting has been created to give an overall framework and meta-plot for other settings we hope to create to simply slot right into it.
The Core book will go much further than the sampler version, providing more examples, more methods of play and more resources for games such as sample edges and antagonists. It will also have more on storytelling and help with improvising games and using the Tarot cards to play.
There will also be more on the linking setting used, the Erebus, and how it works and can be navigated, as well as some of its numerous dangers. The quickstart book introduces the meta-plot and this will also be expanded on.
You can try a basic beta version of the game for free if you want as there is a sample PDF at www.fortuneswheel.co.uk/Fortunes-Wheel-Quickstart.pdf
This will give some idea of the sort of production quality we are aiming for.
There is also a printable summary of the game and a step-by-step guide here which should give you a sense of how the system works so you can try it out for yourself. If you dont have any tarot cards there is a conversion for dice at the back of the sampler and there are many online and app decks out there.

The first setting book for Fortunes Wheel.
A seemingly idyllic section of English countryside has been magically hidden for centuries in a fold in space. Cradled within is a gate to the fountain of creation itself, the Erebus, which infects Witchings inhabitants dreams and gives birth to the greatest hopes and darkest nightmares.
Following on from the fragments of in the Quickstart PDF of the story of 'Icarus' players can explore the mysterious 'Witching Fold' and its inhabitants, along with the various secret ordo, terrifying monsters and numerous plots and conspiracies to be found there.
Inspiration for the setting is found in the work of Tim Powers (with a nod to Roger Zelazny along the way) assuming he met H.P.Lovecraft on a dark night on the coast of Devon. That they discussed Arthurian legends over a cream tea that was laced with a mysterious poison that bought their nightmares to life, and unearthed a centuries old conspiracy concerning myths and legends, the creation of the universe, fallen angels, faeries and alchemy.
What do fallen angels and Faeries have to do with a hidden part of the English countryside, Arthurian romance and the Tarot? There is only one way to really find out - play the game!
A mysterious legacy has been passed on to you. A collection of notes and diary entries, scraps, maps and assorted sundry items was inherited by the designer of this game who is now sharing them with you, the reader. Armed with a pack of Tarot cards you will learn from these and the designers game constructed around them how to build worlds. You will also learn how to create guises with which you can explore them and how to battle the terrors that await.
There are dark secrets waiting to be unlocked, a hidden Nemesis that threatens the fate of worlds and the destruction of our own lurks on the edge of reality. Will you be the one to thwart Nemesis? Or will you fall, crushed beneath the fickle wheel of fate?
In the darkness they call the Erebus, the place where all the creative energy that formed the universe is stored, there is great beauty and great danger - You might battle or befriend ghosts and monsters, faeries and angels and strange creatures from other worlds. The hardest challenge of all though may simply be yourself - your own longings and fears bought to life in the dark. Some say the Erebus is the land of Faerie itself, or the abode of the dead. Others say it is a hole in creation that sucks in all our creations and our subconscious fears and brings them to life.
Because of Witching's unnaturally close proximity to the Erebus it also helps to prevent the mysterious ghost-like shards that form within it from escaping into the wider world. Icarus believed that the protections of the Witching Fold are breaking down and that this could lead to our world, perhaps even all worlds, collapsing permanently into the Erebus and being swallowed up by darkness and chaos. He detected the involvement of traitors in his own faction, or ordo, that was pledged to protecting the fold and stopping such an event with the hidden hand of the powerful enemy he called Nemesis.
Witching is full of secrets. Various factions exist with their own agendas and sometimes even their own members plot against their factions goals. Players may be outsiders who have found a way into the fold (or been bought in by someone on the inside...) or they may be already established in the Fold as players in the great game of conspiracy and betrayal that have made them vulnerable to manipulation by Nemesis.
Exploring Witching will bring you into these conspiracies and plots but will also enable you to uncover their secrets. It will also bring you to the threshold of the Erebus itself and the countless worlds that form there and the other game settings we intend to create. There will also be some puzzles and secret codes hidden in the game and setting that will help you to unlock some of its mysteries.
The final game will include an expanded character creation system for more detailed crafting of the Elements and skills. We will also show you more ways of using the wheel in the game to 'read' your characters and creations. It will look at cards in their own Element or in an opposing one in more detail and internal psychological conflicts.
We plan for the final book to include some fun variants of this including things like hit locations and a 'fencing' system for duels. There will also be more task examples and information on using your other Elements for struggles of will power, emotional battles to shame your enemies and boost the moral of your friends, and sample weapons and armour.
We will also put up more demo videos from time to time on our youtube page https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpvmQvgZkupOcprU5dZBkxGjB56e_jn2M
The deck used in the demo videos above is the beautiful 'Golden Tarot of the Renaissance'

When the Kickstarter concludes, we will work on completing the books, integrating backer contributions, creating artworks and finalising the text based on our drafts and feedback from players. We will then create the PDF versions and submit for print-on-demand proofs through DriveThruRPG. After the books are reviewed and we are happy they are of a high enough quality we will send the PDF versions to PDF only and all print backers and we will move onto the next stage.
Mortal Print Backers
Our basic Mortal backer levels are NOT fully inclusive of physical copies of the print book we're producing. You get access to the printed books at cost and pay for shipping. If you want a printed copy, this part is VERY IMPORTANT.
When everything has been reviewed, backers who pledged for a physical copy of the book can visit DriveThruRPG.com to purchase the print copy of the book at varying levels of binding and printing quality. The printing cost will be roughly another £6 to £25 per book depending upon the quality level the backer desires (B/W, standard colour or Premium colour and softback or hardback). MSRP for these books will be around £12 - £50 each, depending upon binding and print quality so you will make a big saving against MSRP (we have tried to get a small overall saving after factoring in pledges as well where we can). An additional shipping cost is also incurred at this point. Shipping costs vary by location depending upon the availability of local printing facilities. (They print books in the US, the UK, and some other countries.)
Neither the printing cost nor the shipping cost is included in the amount pledged as part of this Kickstarter campaign for basic backers, and you will be responsible for paying DriveThruRPG directly. You will get a coupon from us for the print-on-demand copy at-cost (i.e., you are only paying material and distribution costs, and we do not receive additional profits from your purchase), then you pay DriveThruRPG the cost of the book + shipping and they will print (via Lightning Source) and ship to you directly. The coupon will be for the type of printed book you opted for as a backer.
Doing this means that more backer money can be used on the project itself, enabling us to deliver a better product to you. We also don't have to charge additional money upfront in the backer levels or increase the goal to cover the costs of printing and shipping. Our goal here is to finish the books to the highest standard we can for you so you will get a comprehensive quality game.
Estimated cost to backers (including books at cost and pledge but excluding shipping). Estimates based on a 300 page book. Keep in mind you are also getting 2x pdfs and at upper backer levels custom art and hand-crafted/customised items.

Premium vs Standard Colour Books
This is how Drivethrurpg describes the different options for colour books:
"What is the difference between Premium Colour and Standard Colour?
The primary difference between Standard and Premium colour books is the paper stock the books are printed on.
Standard Colour uses the same paper as the Black & White books, so it is a bit thinner and does not hold the colour ink quite as well as the thicker, premium, paper does. This means the colours won't be as sharp or bright as a Premium book.
The Premium colour uses a thicker paper that can hold heavier ink saturation and thus the colour pages look a little brighter and the contrast is much more powerful. Premium is more expensive to produce in part because of the heavier paper and there is more ink used in the process.
Both B&W and standard colour books are printed on 50-lb. standard white paper. Premium colour books are printed on 70-lb. white paper".

Immortal Print Backers
The upper backer levels have print books as inclusive, with nothing extra to pay. When the books have been proofed and we are happy with them, we will have Drivethrurpg ship you your books, or in the case of the highest level of backing we will have them shipped to us for signing and integrating with the presentation box and then ship to you along with your mystery props and secrets box and everything else.
Mystery Boxes and Art Prints
At some of the higher backer levels we will create unique mystery boxes for backers. We will hand craft several game props for each box and no two boxes will be exactly the same. You will get a mix of a few small prop items and paper clues and some special in game secrets and story seeds. If you create a character with us to be added into the game books these will be tailored to that character. If we were to create these on commission it would normally be for around £100 to £500.
We will send your Mystery Box to you separately when both the books and the boxes are ready. We will also send any art prints at the same time.
In Game Creations and Art
If you have opted for a backing level that includes the creation of in game creations such as characters, locations, monsters and so on we will contact you once the Kickstarter has finished if we are fully funded to guide you through the process. Your custom creation will then be integrated into the game books when we create the final products and before we release anything. We want to ensure that your creation plays a significant role in the game and is not just incidental and inconsequential. This is about enabling backers to have a meaningful input into the game setting. If we were to create these on commission it would normally be for around £100 to £500.
UPDATE - THE HIDDEN ROOM
Following feedback we are looking into giving the Hidden Room a long term home outside of social media (facebook) so those who do not like using social media/Facebook can join in there. See the FAQ below for more on this.
£5,000 - Reference cards for the game through Drivethrurpg.
These would be for quick reference for the basic system, the cards and correspondences.
£10,000 - A free PDF mini campaign for the Witching setting for all backers.
This would involve at least one of the four great families of Witching and their ordo - the Knights of the Rose. It will feature some locations in the fold in more depth but will also take players into the Erebus itself to the stronghold of the Knights of the Rose where characters from legend have slept for centuries and a very well known and much loved character from fiction rules.
Once the main books are created and shipped we will continue working on this as an addition we will send later in the year.
£15,000 - Another setting book, Ironfall.
Ironfall is a pseudo-medieval setting in a distant world in the far future reminiscent of classic book series such as Gene Wolfe's 'books of the New Sun', Robert Silverberg's 'Maijapoor Chronicles', Andre Norton's 'Witchworld' and Katherine Kurt's 'Deryni' books.
Following a war with the original inhabitants of the planet, colonists of an alien world lost access to the massive colony bioships that held the supplies, technology and knowledge they needed. One ship, 'Silence' broke contact and still orbits the planet of Ironfall as a second moon, another, 'Sorrow' went insane and crashed. The twisted remnants of it's crew now bioengineer monsters in a dark parody of their original mission. The third bioship, 'Hope' was lost.
Centuries later those who escaped the bioship 'Sorrow' have established a society ruled by a powerful feudal theocracy in the land of Fashven. As the remnants of salvaged and seemingly magical bio-technology start to fail them the colony is riven by factions and heresies and are increasingly struggling to battle the abominations still being spawned by Sorrow's servants. Those following the story of Icarus can attempt to thwart the plans of a servant of Nemesis to build a secret army to assault those trying to protect our world.
Once the main books are created and shipped and the mini-campaign has been completed we will continue working on this as an addition we will send toward the end of the year.
Last but not least, our mascot, the General and the designers say thank you for checking out our Kickstarter and to all those getting involved - lets make this game awesome - together!
Risks and challenges
This is our first game that we have made for production. The game designer. Peter, has 38 years of rpg experience as a referee and has been creating games for his own group for most of that time. He is also a prize winning artist and illustrator who has created book covers for established authors such as Storm Constantine, Ian Watson and David Barnett. The layout designer and main prop-maker, his wife Suzette, studied fine art and photography at OCAD in Toronto and does all the desk top publishing as well as working on her own art projects.
Between us we have the skills and the vision, as well as experience of working on various creative projects to deadlines and to a high standard.
The Core System book for Fortunes Wheel is already 90% written but the Setting book and most of the art still needs to be created. Funding is essentially to enable us to work flat out on the project to complete it, but should the project face significant delays for any reason this could mean we run out of funds before it is completed. This should not stop the game from being finished, but could mean we do not include as much material or to as high a standard as we wish to aim for. The game material is being created in a modular fashion to make sure that we produce a good product even if there is a major disaster, such as the team being tracked down by Nemesis and cast into the Erebus to wander lost forever. We also have a backup computer which means we can keep working on the project even if we have a major computer failure and we have tried to ensure there is a buffer in the funding in case of delays.
The more we raise though the more of a buffer we get to ensure the game is completed to the highest standard we can produce.
Both of us do other work as well, but the intention is for this to become our priority and effectively a full time project for at least one of us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
