Shadowrun Returns brings back one of our most original & cherished game settings as a 2D turn-based RPG for tablets & PC.
Shadowrun Returns brings back one of our most original & cherished game settings as a 2D turn-based RPG for tablets & PC.
36,276 backers pledged $1,836,447 to help bring this project to life.

Today is the day!!

At 10am PST February 27, your Steam, GOG and Humble Store keys were officially activated. Backers and folks who bought the Collectors Edition of SRR can now download their free copy of Shadowrun: Dragonfall.

In addition, we have updated Shadowrun Returns to version 1.2, and added the ability to save your game at any time (and in any story, including Dead Man’s Switch AND User-Generated Content).

It’s hard to believe that one of our Kickstarter stretch goals has grown into such a major release for our little studio. Dragonfall is actually much bigger than our original campaign - some completionist-type folks are reporting as much as 18 hours long!

Beyond the new campaign, city, characters, equipment, portraits, enemies, save functionality, and editor features, you’ll find lots of small improvements in the game. We really went all out for this expansion and we hope you like it as much as we do.

We've had a blast developing Dragonfall and would love to continue making stories in the Shadowrun Universe!

To do that, we’re gonna need your help getting the word out about Dragonfall. Remember, we’re an indie studio and work directly for our audience - no publisher with deep marketing pockets here!

So please take a moment RIGHT NOW to post one of the links below to your favorite social media sites, fan forums, store forums - anywhere you think they’ll get some positive attention.

  • Kotaku’s Mike Fahey says, “Dragonfall is the Shadowrun I Know and Love"
  • DanW accidentally got a hold of an early copy of Dragonfall while helping us beta test version 1.2. We felt pretty bad about “giving and then taking away”, so we gave him an early look at the campaign. His impressions can be read in “Road Movie to Berlin: One Fan's Semi-Official Preview of Dragonfall”.
  • Swedish Tavern posted this wonderful SPOILER FILLED "Let's Play" video recording of his first hour impressions of the campaign. Mikael’s emotion and enthusiasm is absolutely infectious and we loved listening to his reactions to what’s happening on screen.
  • Now, if you’d prefer to remain RELATIVELY spoiler free, you can watch Harebrained Scheme’sLightly Edited Let's Play” and see what sort of choices and options you’ll have in the game.
  • And, of course, any great reviews you find!
And here are a few more links suitable for sharing (um, right now):
As you can imagine, we’re anxiously waiting to see how the world receives our new story. We put a lot into it and hope it shows how hard we’ll work to grow and improve the Shadowrun experience if we get the chance.

We’re very grateful for all the support you’ve given us over the last 23 months. It’s been a pleasure bringing Shadowrun back to the screen for you.

Danke schön!!!

Shadowrun: Dragonfall Keys Away!

We are excited to let you know that we have begun emailing Shadowrun: Dragonfall keys to all Backers and anyone who ordered the Shadowrun Returns Collector’s Edition from the HBS website. You can add the game to your Library with your key when you receive it, but note that it will not pre-load. You can download the game when it unlocks on Thursday, February 27 at 10am PST.

It will take a few days to get all the emails out, so watch your inbox and be sure to check your spam folder. If you don’t receive it by the end of the day on Monday, please contact us at . We thank you for your patience in advance!

Please note that if you previously requested a key for Shadowrun Returns, we will begin sending Dragonfall GOG keys early next week. If you have not requested a GOG or Humble Store key yet and would like one, no problem! Just shoot us an email and we’ll get that to you as soon as we can.

Update on the DRM-free Version of the Game
We've been so impressed with the level of service that our partners at and Humble Store have been able to provide that we have decided to let them handle all future DRM-free updates. This will allow us to stay focused on Shadowrun. If you haven’t requested DRM-free keys yet, and would like one, please send us your Kickstarter email address along with which partner you prefer so you can continue to have access to those updates.

Spreading the News Far and Wide
As you know, Dragonfall originally started as the promise of a "second city" during our Kickstarter campaign, but the length and breadth of this story has been expanded into a full-fledged 12+ hour stand alone campaign. The expansion features a memorable team, compelling choices, strategic depth, and a bunch of new gameplay and editor features, including the ability to save your progress anytime. (And remember, you’ll be able to save anywhere in the original Dead Man’s Switch campaign, too.) We're really proud of Dragonfall, and we'd love your help making sure your friends know just how much adventure awaits them!

A great way to do that is to share this awesome preview that Kotaku's Mike Fahey wrote this week. We sent Mike a preview of the first couple hours of the game, and we were thrilled to see that he really "gets" what we're doing with Dragonfall - listening to YOU, our audience, to evolve and improve the Shadowrun experience. Below are a couple of new screen shots we shared with him. You can find more screen shots along with the Dragonfall trailer and wallpaper on the HBS website.
Finally, here are a couple more things to note:

More Localizations!
As part the of Kickstarter, we promised German localization of Shadowrun Returns and we're happy to announce that it is now available on Steam. Russian localization is also currently available and Chinese is in the works.

We want to make sure you all know that the Beta for Version 1.2 of Shadowrun Returns is now LIVE on Steam. This version includes the new and improved Save Game functionality, including the ability to save in the middle of scenes, and a variety of fixes and improvements to the core game. If you’re interested in looking under the hood at those changes, be sure to read the Release Notes located on the Shadowrun Returns forum here: And feel free to jump into the Beta to help us test it! Here’s the best place to report any bugs you find.

The update will be released to the public alongside the Dragonfall expansion, but v1.2 does not require the purchase of Dragonfall to use.

Localization Update

The German translation of Shadowrun Returns is still in process but has been delayed due to some production hiccups. We are working with our localization partner to ensure a high quality translation, and look forward to releasing it in an update that will coincide with the release of Dragonfall. As an added bonus, we are happy to announce we will also release a Russian and Chinese translation at the same time, February 27th, 2014!

As always, thanks for the opportunity to make this happen. We’re excited to get all of our hard work on Dragonfall into your hands next month!

Shadowrun Returns Version 1.1.1 Released - Includes French, Spanish and Italian!

Happy Holidays!

As we head toward the release of Shadowrun: Dragonfall at the end of January, we also continue to improve on, add features to, and fix bugs in Shadowrun Returns and the SR Editor.

Since our last update we’ve fixed lots of bugs but the most notable addition in Version 1.1.1 is that French, Italian and Spanish language options are now available. We are (anxiously) awaiting the German and Russian files back from the company doing those translations for us so that we can finish our localization work and make it available to German and Russian speakers.

Version 1.1.1 also contains more of the new Editor features we’ve been using to create Shadowrun: Dragonfall so you can use them too. These include a revamped Thermometer to display more detailed scene performance metrics, a Get Count of Alive Actors data function trigger and a new Display Popup with image and caption. There are quite a few more as well.

You can check out a list of the bug fixes, features and additions on the New Releases page of the Shadowrun Returns wiki.

The end of the year always brings out “Best of” lists and we’re really thrilled to find ourselves on a few of those lists including:

You can still vote for Shadowrun Returns at two different websites. has nominated us as Best Crowdfunded Game of 2013 and has us up for a BLACK BETA SELECT AWARD as 2013 Best Indie. Voting is ongoing so you can still head over to both those sites to vote. (You’ll be eligible for a $2000 gift card over at the site, too. You’ll need to add 0111 to your phone number if you’re in the US.)

SNES Reboot

We want to give a heads up to all the SNES Shadowrun fans out there! JR Riedel and his team are creating a reboot of the SNES Shadowrun game using the Shadowrun Returns Editor. A Joystiq article about this effort just came out today and we can’t wait to play it ourselves!

And Finally...

It’s been a hell of a year here and none of it would be possible without the continued support of our amazing Kickstarter Backers. THE YEAR OF SHADOWRUN has been fun and exciting and heartwarming and very, very challenging and we deeply appreciative of the opportunity to make Shadowrun Returns for you.

From Jordan, Mitch, and everyone at Harebrained Schemes, we wish you a very happy holiday season!

See you in 2014!

And remember - “Never trust a dead man.”
