A Special One-Year Anniversary Update For Our Backers

As Jordan discusses in the video above, exactly one year ago today we released Shadowrun Returns on Steam. It was a pivotal moment for our little studio here. In 14 months, we’d gone from a dozen developers working out of a storage closet to being a full-fledged indie RPG developer. And the last year has been just as important for Harebrained Schemes - in the weeks and months following launch, Shadowrun Returns received a bunch of great reviews and kind words, from old and new fans alike. We even made several Game of the Year lists for 2013.

But most importantly, we got YOUR feedback. We learned what was working and what wasn’t about the game we’d worked so hard to create. Even better, we were able to take a lot of this feedback and channel it directly into Shadowrun: Dragonfall. Save-anywhere. A more open story with more compelling choices and locations to explore. A fully-realized team of runners to command and grow with over the course of the campaign.

And when Dragonfall launched, we were incredibly happy with the response it received. Reviewers praised the story, characters, and writing as some of the best in the business. For an indie studio like ours, that’s a huge deal! Still, as with Shadowrun Returns, we heard feedback about some things that folks wanted to see improved or simply wanted more of. We also heard many requests for a standalone version of the game - since it’s narratively independent of the Shadowrun Returns campaign, players wanted to be able to dive directly into Dragonfall.

So we thought: Why not just… make Dragonfall better?

We’re excited to announce Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut. Inspired by other passionate, community-focused developers like CD Projekt RED (who continued to improve and add to their Witcher titles post-launch), we decided to make an even bigger & better Dragonfall for you guys. The Shadowrun team has been hard at work taking the existing Dragonfall campaign and making it even better - adding new features, missions, art, and more.

And we’ll be releasing it as a standalone title on Steam, GOG and the Humble Store.

What’s more, as a continued “thank you” for your support, the Director’s Cut will be FREE to all Backers and to all owners of the expansion version of Dragonfall. If you’ve played Dragonfall already, this should be a great opportunity to return to the streets of Berlin and enjoy the improved campaign all over again - to try a new archetype and make different decisions. And if you haven’t played Dragonfall yet, this will be the definitive version of the game to dive into.

We’ll be talking more about the specifics later next month - but we wanted you, our Backers, to be the first to know what we’re working on. The Director’s Cut will be released sometime in September.

Stay tuned for a full announcement in August. Until then - from the entire Shadowrun team - thank you again for your continued support, and for your help making Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall a reality.

I just want to say thank you for Shadowrun Returns, and especially Dragonfall. Dragonfall story was for me one of the best RPG stories I played for a while, short and very sweet. Im looking forward for directors cut and more campaigns in the future!

Super cool, guys! Now if only you could announce another expansion... :-D

    3. Thomas Johnson on July 25, 2014

These games truly are amazing. They are bar none the best Shadowrun experience out there. It's been such an utter blast to jump back into this world as a video game, to actually SEE it all, hear the music, etc. I'm sure you guys must be wanting to make other games after doing this for a few years, but I for one can't help hoping that there's a LOT more Shadowrun games to come from Harebrained. I would /absolutely/ back another Shadowrun kickstarter if you guys made one!

    4. madGamer on July 25, 2014

amazing surprise. Thanks. next do another kickstarter campaign for a new shadowrun with a new city. i will back for sure ;)

    5. Dave, Shadowrunner on July 25, 2014

This is unexpected, but awesome. Of course, I do agree with everyone that has asked for a new official expansion in another city / location. I want to give HBS more money for more Shadowrun Returns :)

    6. Patricia on July 25, 2014

Ah man! I soooo loved Dragon Fall! This is awesome news guys! Thank you!!!!
However, I do hope that sometime in the not too distant future we can start looking forward to a 3rd game, that'll top even Dragon Fall ;)

    7. Joshua Fennema on July 25, 2014

It gives me a great deal of satisfaction knowing that I did not waste my money on this project. What you guys are giving back to us is well beyond what I expected.

      Thank you.

Now, at the risk of sounding greedy, is there a chance in hell that you guys can get the rights to do an Earthdawn RPG?

    8. Phil Creswell on July 25, 2014

      MOAR OFFICIAL EXPANSIONS PLZ!

No, but seriously, I was just about to start Dragonfall and now I have to wait! I need a sound that's like happy and "argh" at the same time.

    9. Gonchi on July 25, 2014

I want one of those Dragonfall posters in the background...

    10. Roger Ramirez on July 25, 2014

While I love Shadowrun, and love free stuff, and love free Shadowrun stuff, I would LOVE to pay you for an all new story with new characters that was bigger and badder than Dragonfall.

    11. Joshua Ouille on July 25, 2014

What an unexpected surprise! Thank you!

    12. Aaron Roudabush on July 25, 2014

Not saying I don't like this, but it'd have been nice to see Dead Man's Switch get revised to maybe more be like Dragonfall than to make the already great Dragonfall better.

I Loved Returns, loved Dragonfall and loved the anniversary update, and it feels good to know you guys are giving your best and giving us something for free, BUT what I really want right now is something to spend my money on. Happy Rebirth day. :)

    15. Evgeni Petrov on July 25, 2014

You guys rock because I was lazy to play it... now I will be waiting for the Director's Cut!!! AWEEEESSOOOOOME!

    16. Michael Bentley on July 25, 2014

I really appreciate videos like this. I've been a part of so many kickstarters where it felt like people just sort of took our money and the hell with us. Dragonfall really showed that you did take our feedback to heart and I truly appreciate you offering the director's cut of Dragonfall free of charge. It is a really nice gesture that you are under no obligation to do.

      @Brian Sfinas

As I said I have a feeling they'll be honing their skills on that one: cutting their teeth on some new tech, upgrading the software alongside the game to prepare for a smoother, better controlled release of the hypothetical (but hopefully to come) third module, who'll be able to be released as an independent thing without having to fear too many launch issues because the water will have been already tested on that director's cut.

Seems like the smart thing to do, especially since it leaves them the manpower to deal with Golem Arcaan - which must take most of their energy/work time right now.

And remember: it's September, barely in a couple of month. The director's cut doesn't hinder any true third module to be made at a later date, quite the contrary.

    19. Christoph Wagner on July 25, 2014

Great news, wanted to do a replay of DF anyway, guess now I'll have to wait for the DC ;)

And great to hear you are doing well!

Well, I look forward to it since I haven't played dragonfall yet! I finished the original campaign around the time it launched (hectic life schedule!)

As others have kindly(and not so kindly) mentioned, going for another campaign of shadowrun returns would be pretty awesome. Since you guys have all the dev tools and resources handy, it shouldn't be too difficult to touch everything up and start a 3rd campaign in the same engine!~

      Good luck!

    21. Brian Sfinas on July 25, 2014

I've gotta be honest, I'm disappointed with this announcement. As others have mentioned, I was hoping you had been working on a new campaign. I mean, making a director's cut is cute but if you guys want more money and more fans a new adventure seems like a no-brainer. Please re-consider this pet project and give us a new, more expansive campaign.

    22. James Bowe on July 25, 2014

If you guys keep making DLC as good as Dragonfall, I'll cough up the money. Seriously, that was one of the best RPGs I've played all decade.

Fantastic new and update all around!

totally killer. i was just thinking i should replay dragonfall again, now i guess i'll have to run through once or twice before september.

Happy anniversary. Thanks for making it all happen Hope you guys are doing great and the Kickstarter did kick-start you.

I have no doubt you're being smart about it and using the relaunch of Dragon Fall to hone your skills for whatever may come later, if it can come to pass. Which will all be for the better of course.

Can't wait to replay that module a fourth time.

While I certainly enjoyed the first campaign, I did feel that 'Dragonfall' improved on that experience in almost every conceivable way, and I absolutely loved it. And it's cool that you're improving it and all, but honestly, what I was hoping for in that video was an announcement that you're taking what you learned from that and are developing a brand new campaign that I could buy. So, I'm cool waiting for that (and I get the 'one thing at a time' thing), and I guess it's nice to get more free stuff, but the sooner a new thing comes out, the better, as far as I'm concerned! Go team!

    29. Gavan Lim-Joon on July 25, 2014

I'd much rather you focused on a new standalone expansion with a new story that we pay for. That's win win. Most people want a new game rather than replay an old one.

At this point I will also support anything Harebrained does that you feel would draw more modders to the game. The thing I think Shadowrun needs most right now is more community members making custom content. I think the Dragonfall director's cut will help with that.

Paul Brown on July 25, 2014

Yeah it would be cool, moving forward, to see some additional campaigns set in different cities. This game is designed with user created content in mind, so each additional official campaign would give more environments, enemies and so forth to use.

    39. Spacebug on July 25, 2014

      Woah, nice!

Now I am curious how you're going to choose to do this...is the current SRR BASE GAME VERSION on Dragonfall going to:
      - be deleted from base game because it will be replaced with something more awesome
      - be updated so people can choose stand alone or not
      - be left in it's current state
      - all of the above
      - none of the above
      - bacon

If standalone only, will it be launchable from within SRR base game anyway?

      :)

Given that you've put so much work into updating the Dragonfall campaign, I wonder, has any thought been given to a similar treatment of the original campaign? Taking what you've learned from both and expanding the original seems like a logical next step.

How about another expansion? I personally would have no objection to throwing your guys more money, the engine is already great so no reason to start over there. You can call it a "game" if you want and sell it standalone, point is, I'd love to see more content.
