Shadowrun Returns brings back one of our most original & cherished game settings as a 2D turn-based RPG for tablets & PC.
36,276 backers pledged $1,836,447 to help bring this project to life.

Hey All!

Tomorrow, we will announce the title of the new Berlin expansion, Shadowrun: Dragonfall. Along with all the details, we’ll also be unveiling the game’s logo and a cool new illustration to go with it. As our Backers, we wanted to share this with you before the rest of the world gets it.

Here’s the official scoop:

BERLIN. The Flux-State: a stable anarchy enforced by an ever-shifting coalition of megacorps, political factions, and savvy power players. A place where almost anything goes and the right connections can be the difference between success and starvation. Dangerous jobs abound and there’s no better place to earn a quick payday - provided you live long enough to spend it. For you and your team of battle-scarred runners, it’s just another day in the Free City of Berlin.

But a new threat is rising, one that could mean untold chaos and devastation. The only clue: whispers of the DRAGONFALL, a long-forgotten event from the earliest days of the Awakened world. As you find yourself drawn into a maze of veiled dangers and strange machinations, you will come face-to-face with a grim spectre of the past… and alter the course of Berlin’s future.

  • Experience a New Full-Length Campaign: Return to the “Tech meets Magic” future of Shadowrun as you and your team of runners get drawn into a treacherous conspiracy. Operating out of an offbeat central hub neighborhood, you’ll choose which missions to accept and how you’ll approach them while navigating the dark underbelly of “the Flux”.
  • An Exciting New Locale: Shadowrun: Dragonfall transports runners to the Free City of Berlin, a thrilling Shadowrun setting full of gorgeous new hi-res environments, a diverse new cast of characters, and a new soundtrack by the composer of the original Sega Genesis Shadowrun game, Sam Powell.
  • Command Your Team: Lead a small team of shadowrunners, each with their own outlook and backstory. Each member of your team is designed to play an interesting role during missions and has a unique set of skills, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • New Weapons, Cyberware, Enemies & More: Try your hand at the long-range sniper rifle, devastating grenade launcher, or stun-inducing taser. Chrome yourself out in the latest cyberware and take on deadly new enemies - including new magical creatures like gargoyles and fire drakes. Dragonfall brings a host of new items, characters, portraits, and improvements to the Shadowrun Returns experience.
  • Save Anywhere: You can save your progress at any time during the game. This functionality will also be added to the original Shadowrun Returns “Dead Man’s Switch” campaign.
  • New Game Editor Features: A wide range of enhancements to the game editor for community content creators - including a scripting system to better control lighting, tracking mission objectives in the main game UI, placing exploding barrels, and allowing players to input keypad passwords and custom text strings in conversations. In addition, content creators will be able to use all of the new Berlin environment art, items and characters in their own stories along with assets from the original Shadowrun Returns campaign.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall will be released January 2014 for Windows, OSX, and Linux and will be free to Backers. You’ll get the same number of Steam keys you received for the original game via our Backer website and details about how you’ll get your DRM-free version will come in a future update. Dragonfall will launch at $14.99 and we’ll also release the Shadowrun Campaign Pack on the same day. The campaign pack contains the original game and the Dragonfall expansion in one package for only $24.99. We think it’s a great way to get new players into Shadowrun.

And finally, here’s a new wallpaper for y’all. We can’t wait to show you more Dragonfall over the next two months!

Talk to you soon,

Can you tell us how Dragonfall will be released on iOS? Will save anywhere and other improvements be added to the existing Shadowrun Returns app? Will Dragonfall be an IAP or a separate standalone release?

    13. Creator Simeon Gavalas on November 19, 2013

Save Anywhere and Shadowrun: Dragonfall free to Backers! The best update so far. Well done!

(I will finally get to play Shadowrun! I did not dare play with the previous save mechanics, I didn't want to have my nerves wrecked).

    14. Creator Mark Mullett on November 19, 2013

I'd love to see more blood and gore when things die in Shadowrun :)

Yeah. I'm so looking forward to this.
As a Berliner (Berlinean? Citizen of Berlin?) I Bad to vote for my home town (sorry Hong Kong, I hope it's your turn next).
Seeing the Berlin TV Tower beside a pyramid looks so strange... can' t wait to see you take of what my City would look like in the shadows.

    20. Creator Joshua R on November 19, 2013

Very cool! Can't wait to play this - just around the corner! Here's hoping for major success with SRR - I'd love to see another HBS content drop somewhere down the line. :]

    23. Creator ☜☆RSF☆☞ on November 19, 2013

Fantastic update HBS. Definitely a lot of work going on behind the scenes - and Berlin is looking awesome!! Thanks heaps & keep up the great work.

    24. Creator The Evolutionary on November 19, 2013

The original release was a good but small start. Was moderately happy I backed the project but the save system was a little annoying and though the original content was small but appreciated the ability to create better game (Maybe I'll design a tech course around it...additional license purchases ;-) ) With the new patches and additional content, this is becoming one of the projects I'm most pleased to have backed. They are doing right by us and improving it all the time. You've earned our trust sincerely and I for one will be happy to back whatever projects you have coming in the future. You guys are proving awesome! I'm kicking myself for missing your last project and I'd really like to add funding for it! Any way I can add more support to your new project? (You tell people you've a loyal fan here.)

    25. Creator Kraken on November 19, 2013

Still disappointed they didn't add Astral Perception to the game.
It was promised in the original pitch and it could work with only some kind of additional shader (that's why I'm not asking about projection).

    26. Creator twincast~Eternally Tormented WoOS-o-DOoD on November 19, 2013

      Me likey. :D

Not feeling articulate enough for further elaborations right now. ;P

    27. Creator Ursula Maria Brand on November 19, 2013

Thanks for the new save system. That was the only thing that annoyed me in your beautiful game. Keep up the great work!

    28. Creator gandalf.nho on November 19, 2013

Great news, hope we can get GOG keys too

    29. Creator British on November 19, 2013

    30. Creator Juez on November 19, 2013

      Can't wait till january !

    32. Creator Ryan "Keokuk" Smith on November 19, 2013

Great :) Like that the packaged deal is only 5 bucks more than the original price point.

      Seems like a good deal.

    33. Creator Lost-brain -Obsidian Order Dark Goddess on November 19, 2013

Cool for the save system. the basic campaign doesn't needed it, but the mods... it's another story !

    34. Creator ET3D on November 19, 2013

Save system is great news. I'll be waiting for this to make its way to Android so I can continue the game.

    35. Creator Mikkel Kjær Jensen - Cynic of the OO on November 19, 2013

Will the save feature be a part of the core game logic, so it also propagates to fan modules, or will modders have to implement their own solution?

    36. Creator Dunkare on November 19, 2013

"Save Anywhere: You can save your progress at any time during the game. This functionality will also be added to the original Shadowrun Returns “Dead Man’s Switch” campaign."

great! so i will be able to play this game after all! thanks for not ignoring this problem!

    37. Creator S.D. on November 19, 2013

Thanks for the update, HBS. Berlin is looking real good, and I'm still digging on the main campaign while poking the mod editor a bit, here and there.
Between the newly-arranged DRM-free distribution agreement, and the Linux game & editor working so well for me... well, you keep making new campaigns, and I'll keep buying them! B-)

    38. Creator Hody72 on November 19, 2013

Any chance to get that wallpaper for Dual Screens would look awesome...

    39. Creator Andinel on November 19, 2013

Any chance the iPad version of the game will see the expansion and the updated features?

    40. Creator RC on November 19, 2013

SUH-WHEEEEET! Lookin good, Chummers! Lookin real good! What an AWESOME way 'ta start off da nu-year! 2013 wuz da year 'o Shadowrun, an 2014 looks 'ta be all about us, da year 'o da Shadowrunner! Eh, Chums!? Can't wait ta play SRR: DragonFall!! ^_^

    41. Creator Azriel on November 19, 2013

Hell yea! Save anywhere and will be added to the original game also. After this comes out and the original game is patched, I can finally tell everybody to get it.

I hope the devs listened to the fans on the other stuff. Specifically alternative options of play for each level (for every class of character besides combat oriented) and non violent solutions to problems without every game turning into a fight/gun fest. I specifically hope the decker (my favorite class) has been improved and can be more useful this time around. In dead mans switch, he was pretty useless because you rarely got to use him till near the end. I also did not like the dialog hacking, I MUCH preferred the matrix hacking which was more fun, but had the same problem of everything being action oriented instead of a stealth.sneaky hacker solution. Still, was fun, but could have been improved. Hope it is better in this campaign.

    42. Creator Cutter on November 19, 2013

"First we take Manhattan. Then we take Berlin!"

So is the Save function for everything now or just the two campaigns - because that would be odd and disappointing. Honestly, the lack of save has relegated it to a niche game. If the save works for everything there'll be some longevity in this title yet.

    43. Creator Josh on November 18, 2013

"Save Anywhere: You can save your progress at any time during the game. This functionality will also be added to the original Shadowrun Returns “Dead Man’s Switch” campaign."

Yay! This is really my only complaint about the game, so it's good you guys are still looking into that for serious =)

    44. Creator EvAk on November 18, 2013

How many save slots are there for save anywhere, how does it compare to the checkpoint system?

    45. Creator Ryan on November 18, 2013

Not that it really matters to me cause I want as many people to hear about the game as possible because you guys deserve the attention.. but you said you were announcing this tomorrow, but you didn't make this a backer only update, so it is possible that some news vultures might post this before you announce it.

Other than that CANT WAIT! especially for that save anywhere feature, i haven't played the game in a while and that was kinda wanna the things that was keeping me away. I just don't have time to play through an entire mission just to save. Was looking for a new game to play any way guess returning to an old one I haven't beat yet counts XD. Sad that this function isn't coming till January but maybe I'll get back into it before then, just so I can beat "dead mans switch" before berlin comes out.

    46. Creator Marc Aranha on November 18, 2013

Looks great, HBS! Can't wait :) Love the new artwork.

    47. Creator daskindt on November 18, 2013

Will we see more weapons of existing types? Missing pistols, smgs, rifles, ect? What about other types like machine pistols?

Any changes to the cyberware system so we can actually install multiple systems into the same area? Like bone sheathing and wired reflexes both going in the body? Not much point to more cyberware if we still can't install it.

    48. Creator Jim Todd on November 18, 2013

I am not so much in a hurry to get save anywhere in the first campaign but I would like to know how we will get it...I am assuming we do not have to buy the new stuff to get the fix to the old. Will instructions come later?
