Post-PAX Post: Our First In-game Assets Revealed!

Hey guys! Hopefully, you all got a chance to see the Kotaku article that came out this weekend, but in case you haven't (or even if you have), we've posted a more in-depth version on our website. So check it out at your leisure!

(p.s. do not actually rely on lighting & shader work to save your art style if you actually agree with me, but hopefully you know this)

I gotta say, I expected it to echo the art style from the sourcebooks a little more closely. I didn't expect low poly comic book characters. I guess they're not going to be seen up close, so you can use that WoW-style blocky design with large swaths of colour, but so far, the SNES/Genesis games did a better job of 80's cyberpunk, which I thought was the point. Maybe it will get rescued by lightning & shader work.

I think the art direction is amazing. About the "gritty" there, I think the combat animations should be gritty. This way the characters have that unique look and feel AND we have the sober, brutal world we expect from Shadowrun :)

    4. Valashar on September 11, 2012

Yes, the characters could have a grittier look. But how they look is good to me, and I think is a good direction to go when you consider that the idea is to make not only a game that all of we fans will love, but that will take Shadowrun as a whole to a larger audience that hasn't had the chance to enjoy the feel of a Predator II in their hands, or wash the dust out of their throat after a battle with a refreshing mug of hurlg and a handful of NERPS.

And hey, you just KNOW that for those who want a grittier look, there will almost certainly be a reskin mod down the line, either from Harebrained or a skilled and devoted fan.

    5. Jan S on September 10, 2012

very nice look! the characters could be grittier, but oh well.

I think the art direction is awesome. It gives the game a distinct look from all the other "me too" turn based games out there. The latest that comes to mind is the luke warm remake of Jagged Alliance. Based on the screenshots I am happy and confident that the team is moving in the right direction.
Id like to see some gameplay and conversation tree mechanics, but this wet my appetite and satisfied me for now.

Thanks so much for a great discussion at PAX!

      Woo hoo! Level Editor-!

    9. russell on September 5, 2012

Hope thoose troll deckers legs are bone augmented or they are gonna snap under his massive frame.... i think plastic bone lacing is all he would need and still let him go through the metal detecrors.
im trying to be light hearted in my want for "fun" looking chars and more "dark", its hard to put into words exactly what id love to see and I guese this while still cool and playable is not what I had in mind.

    10. Brandon 'Link' Copp-Millward on September 4, 2012

That concept art is like.... OH MAN!

    11. RC on September 4, 2012

Hoi Jens, Da Mayor & Tim!

HBS has said they're working on reopening Paypal donations, and I believe you'll be able to "add to" your pledge to go to a higher tier. Give them a little more time to work it out, then I'm sure they'll announce it to every chummer ^_^

      Ja Mata!

I like where I am at but is there a chance that I could maybe order a plat doc wagon card?

    13. James McKendrew on September 4, 2012

I'm with Jens. Any way I can up from my current backer level to a slightly higher one?

    14. Levi on September 4, 2012

      Looks great!

    15. Mike Loftus on September 4, 2012

Awesome. Sauce. Can't wait to get my Doc Wagon Card IRL too.

    16. Raymond Croteau on September 4, 2012

Now to try and learn how to build environments when the editor comes out!

    17. Reinoud on September 4, 2012

Environments are stunning. I also really like the line drawing versions of the characters. The 3D versions are a bit cartoonish for my taste. Especially the disproportionately small legs and large chests. Hope that can be fixed in the final version. Keep it up! :)

    18. CletusVanDamme on September 4, 2012

Looks awesome, definitely a fan of both the environment and the character art.

    19. o8livion on September 4, 2012

      well hello!

the first impression i had when watching the characters was, that i hope i may configure them later...
or at least there should be a possibility to edit the models with an / or THE editor.
the environment looks so well, so dirty, so... SR-like, and the characters, except the mage, look so goofy.

but, on a second thought, i came to the conclusion that it's your game, you know what you wanted to do, and too many cooks are ruining the menue.
i am a fan of SR since childhood, and i dont care about graphics, as long as the gameplay is awesome.

Your choice of that art mix between real and comic is awesome, please continue the dragon approves for the moment :)

    21. Michal Kepinski on September 4, 2012

yup, location is great but characters - definitely too cartoonish - this will make lack of immersion in the game.

I like the background. But the characters look like a cartoon. The art from the books i would prefer.

I didn't even see you guys at PAX, you must not've had a very strong presence.

    26. Jens Krebs on September 4, 2012

Is it still possible to go to a higher pledge level?

    27. Ian Perley on September 4, 2012

I have to say that this looks simply amazing. Keep up the great work, and keep the updates coming! :)

This looks wonderful - the only thing I fear is whether my laptop can handle it (since it handles Skyrim I am sure it will be fine).

    29. Bronson on September 4, 2012

wow looks great, keep up the good work!

    30. James P. Wong on September 4, 2012
