This is a film I've had in my head since the early days of college. I've been a nerd all my life, and attending various types of conventions since at least 8th grade, if not earlier. The convention culture is such a fascinating one, one that is almost an entire world all on it's own. So naturally, I wanted to have a film take place in one. The surrealism, the culture, the sense of brotherhood, it all makes for an interesting dynamic.
At the same time, I wanted to make a film that is entertaining as well, and one that can tell a funny, sometimes heartbreaking story. So I came up with Unengaged, a romantic dramedy about a young artist, heartbroken and just kind of coasting along in his life. I chose to have the setting be a convention, because I felt it would really add something to the story. The setting is so big and bold, that it is, in a sense, a character itself.
Brad Jones, someone who's work I have followed for several years now, immediately fell in love with his character, as well as the film itself. Having him on board is like a dream come true, and I can't wait to work with him. I highly recommend you all check out his work at www.thecinemasnob.com
Along with Brad, I'll be working with several gifted actors/cosplayers. For those who don't know, Cosplay is short for "Costume Play", which is, to put it simply, dressing in a costume of a character. Typically, con-goers will dress as their favorite character, think Spider-Man or Batman. Some do it for fun, others do it professionally, and others still due it for the craftsmanship. Cosplay plays a major roll in the film's overall story, because it's a fascinating topic that I really hope to help folks not in the know, better understand. I'm confident that with the help of my advisers as well as my actors, I can show cosplay for how truly awesome it is.
The budget will be small, but the challenge has been graciously accepted. Shooting on location at a convention, working with tons of extras, the thrill of it all is what excites me most. Not every film needs a huge budget, some people need millions, others thousands. Every single dime donated will go towards not only completing this film, but fulfilling all of your rewards. After all, you guys, the backers, are just as important to this process as the rest of us. I want to make the best possible product I can, and make every penny donated matter.
This is a film I have wanted to make for a while now, and I am glad a service like Kickstarter, is allowing me to take a chance of making that dream a reality. There will be some bumps in the road, as there have been already. However, I won't let a few roadblocks stop me from telling my story, and most importantly, entertaining all of you.
Risks and challenges
And here is where i take a moment to address possible issues with the production. It's true, even with all my meticulous planning, things could go wrong. So, I will try to think of the most common, or most likely issues, and address them here.
1) What if someone doesn't show.
This one is the most troubling. While I have hired a professional group of people that I feel I can trust, I am aware that sometimes life just sucks. If one of the main stars suddenly could no longer appear, adjustments would have to be made. Depending on the timing, the films shooting schedule could potentially have to be pushed back. If this were to happen, I would address on this Kickstarter page, and keep you guys in the loop of alternate plans
2) What if something happens to the equipment
Well, that's why we have insurance!
3) What if you miss something during shooting.
Once the shooting is done, there won't be much I can do, as the convention only lasts so long, and some of the cast members are not from Chicago. However, that's why we have the magic of editing! No scenes would be missed, but if somehow that DID happen, no CRUCIAL, plot-driven scenes would be missed.
4) What if my Reward gets lost in the mail?
If someone doesn't receive their DVD, simply contact me and I would issue out a new one. You guys are putting your trust in me by backing, the least i can do is return the favor by trusting someone to be upfront with me if they didn't receive their rewards, or received the wrong reward.
5) Other concerns
If you guys have any other concerns, just reach out to me, and I'll answer them as best I can. Honestly, I know I can't be prepared for everything, but I like to think I'm quick enough on my toes to adapt.
