Whether it's a short film, feature film, a music video or a documentary, I love making films. Like all directors, if a story intrigues me, I want to share it with the world. Since I became a filmmaker in 2007, I set a goal to make one film per year. I've achieved that. This past year I premiered my 8th film, "A Musical Heartache," which is in a category all by itself - a music video-documentary short.
I am now raising funds for my latest project, a short film called 'Rotten Mangos' that I started writing last April. The screenplay has gone through several revisions and I'm confident it's ready to be filmed and put on the big screen.
First and foremost, I will need the funding for purchasing a million dollar insurance policy and city permits, which is not an easy process but doable for sure. I'll be hiring a crew; a unit production manager, a director of photography, an audio engineer, an assistant director, a script supervisor, a production assistant, one or two grips and one security officer. And most importantly, a catering service! Also, I'll need to rent a limousine for one night to shoot a few scenes.
Production will consist of three (3) nights, with security. The movie will be 90 percent filmed in an alleyway in Lake Worth, FL, with 5 percent being filmed in the rear parking area behind the alleyway. The last 5 percent will be filmed on the back side streets of Lake Worth filming the limousine driving towards the parking area.
Once the funding is successful, I will immediately finalize the cast and crew and purchase the insurance policy and secure permits. Then comes the table read with the actors, and a couple of rehearsals on location with a skeleton crew to get all the lighting, camera angles and blocking ironed out before the official shoot dates.
I will be directing, acting and editing this film. That, at least, will keep some of the costs down. This will be my third narrative film as a director/actor/editor so I'm comfortable wearing those hats.
To recap, the production will be three nights, but these shoot dates will not be consecutive. I estimate we'll have the production wrapped up within a week or two depending on the city requirements, crew and cast availability. Editing will take about two to three months to thoroughly complete the film, followed by a Premiere screening of 'Rotten Mangos'!
Here is another project that I was pleased to have the opportunity to direct, film and edit for musician/singer/songwriter, Bobby Gugliuzza. The music video is part of a documentary film that I directed in 2014 called 'A Musical Heartache'. The song is called 'She'll Be Ok' and stars Actress Catherine Windecker. This music video won BEST MUSIC VIDEO at the 2015 L-DUB Film Festival in Lake Worth, FL.
I added the below video on March 20, 2015; MEL's FILMMAKING REEL (2007-2012). Unfortunately, the quality is weak and it wasn't filmed in High Definition, but I wanted to share the earlier work I've done as a Director, Director of Photographer, Production Manager and Teacher/Mentor. This is the extended version as I hope that this video would help convince anyone that my passion is 100% real, my heart is 100% in this business and my life goes 100mph everyday to try and cram a lifetime of great film experiences to entertain movie goers all over the world. Thank you so much. -MEL
Risks and challenges
I know for a fact that there will be interruptions, delays and problems that will be out of my control. I'm an extremely positive person but the reality is, you have to expect these conditions on every film shoot. I'll be very well prepared (if not already) once we're on location filming, and because of that, I feel I can account for such delays (noise, rain, traffic, tardiness) in my schedule.
One of the main reasons I wanted to do this fundraiser was so that I could pay qualified, professional crew that can handle unforeseen problems and are experienced enough to handle them thoroughly to get the project completed.
'Rotten Mangos' is an exciting challenge for me. I get to direct and act again and work with passionate filmmakers who would do anything to work on set and assist in getting a new movie on the big screen. -MELLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
