About this project
Who are we?
We are Stokbikes, bringing you brand new Dutch design & ready to rock your bicycle world!
What are we making?
We have developed a revolutionary space-saving system for storing and parking bicycles. This unique system adjusts the bicycle’s handlebar and pedals, giving the bicycle a superslim shape so that it can be stored or parked in a very limited space without breaking into a sweat. Almost any type of bicycle can be fitted with our inexpensive system. With the price per square metre for parking in urban areas at a premium, this slick space-saver has definite cost benefits. So, do you also feel the constant need to keep your beloved bike indoors, just like we do, safe from the elements and thieves? Now is your chance.
By completely re-designing the bicycle pedal we not only save a maximum amount of space, it now also functions as a magnetic kickstand. When folded out, these magnetic parts allow you to stick your bicycle to any metal object. This will help prevent your bicycle from falling down or rolling over. And did we already mention that our pedals are even slimmer & sexier than the thinnest foldable pedals currently available on the market? Oh yeah.
Our newly designed bicycle stem has a rotatable point, enabling the handlebar to rotate by a 90 degree angle so that it completely lines up with the bicycle frame. Say what? Yes, our stem has a rotational point situated in the middle of the bicycle stem, saving you a maximum amount of space when parking your bicycle. The cleverly designed mechanism inside the stem ensures that our system is safe for use and functional at the same time. MacGyver, eat your heart out.
Easy to install!
If you think you need to be a rocket scientist to install these babies yourself, guess again! It's as easy as walking your dog (or your girlfriend, or your granny...without the leash of course) during a sunny day in June, in a field of blossoming tulips in the Netherlands (which is really, really flat so it's super easy). Here, have a look yourself:
Okay, enough with the talking, time for some sweet pictures!
Where did the project come from?
In 2014, after numerous complaints from his girlfriend about 'that bicycle in the living room that takes up a lot of space and keeps falling over', Michael had a EUREKA! moment and set out to make the thinnest bike the world has ever seen (seriously)!
Michael quickly realized that he needed help to realize his dream, and this is when Wilbert came into the picture. After taking a few moments to complain about their girlfriends' complaining about their bikes that kept falling over, they started the development of a prototype. Many 3D drawings saw the light of day (in contrary of Michael and Wilbert who made long hours during the night) before they finally made their first 3D printed prototype at the beginning of 2015. A new bicycle era has begun!
What's our plan and schedule?
What’s our budget?
Our goal is to start the production and testing of our bicycle stem and pedals. We want to create a high quality product that will be both safe and functional to use. More than 10% of our Kickstarter budget will go towards extensive testing and certification of our bicycle stem and pedals, making sure we deliver on quality and safety. Our cost breakdown is compiled out of different parts such as tooling, production and materials, a golden sample, testing, marketing and additional fees.
The budget we need for the production, testing, materials, marketing, shipping and additional fees is 90.000 euros.
Testing and Certification
Before our product is ready to reach the market we will conduct many tests in order to get our products ISO certified (ISO 4210-5:2014 and ISO 4210-8:2014), ensuring that our products are from the highest quality standard, safe to use and durable. We have been testing our current prototypes for nearly a year and have made adjustments along the way. We are now ready to start production and industrial testing to ensure we deliver great products to the world.
Why do we care?
We love bicycles and truly believe in the power of this wonderful transportation device. We want to create high quality, functional bicycles and bicycle products that will help people around the world, and thereby encourage more people to start cycling.
Risks and challenges
Nobody likes to see a great idea being executed in a bad way, that is why we have worked very hard to ensure that our product is ready for Kickstarter. Obviously there are always risks involved when starting a project of this magnitude:
The tooling we need to start manufacturing is expensive and requires the right people to ensure the process runs smoothly. There is a slight chance to get delayed on the creation of the molds due to the fact that we are creating two products (pedals and stem) that require a lot of technical knowledge. To minimize the possibility of delays we will be working with trusted partners that have a track record for deadlines and quality.
To ensure the final product is up to the standards we believe in, we will make several Golden Samples in pre-production. These will be tested extensively and if needed, some minor adjustments will be made so we can start production. Besides the required test standards (ISO 4210-5:2014 Cycles / Safety requirements for bicycles / Part 5: Steering test methods & Part 8: Pedal and drive system test methods) we will be using computer simulations and testing facilities to guaranty the quality, strenght and durability. This is to ensure that we deliver on quality and safe to use products.
On rare occasions, things might happen that can´t be planned: There's always a chance that a deadline is missed by a supplier, a machine breaks down or a shipment that gets lost. For this reason, we have a made a selection of suppliers we know personally and therefore have a known track record. This ensures us that we minimize these risks in any way possible.
Our production partner has worked with our chief engineer (Wilbert) for more than 6 years and those were some happy 6 years (if you know what I mean). We think that this is very important in ensuring that the entire production process runs smoothly. Our partner has worked on various high quality projects in previous years and for this reason we believe his experience will help us to deliver on every aspect. As said before, there is always a chance of unexpected problems but with our expertise and the expertise of our partners we are confident that we can resolve any issues that might come up. We feel ensured that we can deliver you, our backer, a wonderful product that you can enjoy for many years to come.
Any pledge amount, even the smallest amount, will bring us one step closer to our goal. So back our project and help us spread the word and bring Stokbikes to life!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
