About this project
Interested backers who just missed the end of the campaign can still pledge by emailing email@example.com by March 5, 2014.
If you missed the campaign you can still preorder Alchemy! at a discount and get extras at the Alchemy! website, alchemycardgame.com
In Alchemy! players become apprentice alchemists sharing a laboratory and trying to outdo one another and prove they've got what it takes to become a master of their craft. Players compete to build potions from a random assortment of formulas laid out on the table at the start of the game and play cards to transmute materials, sabotage one another and mix potions faster.
Each potion can only be made once, so it's important to keep your eyes on what your opponents are trying to make. You can keep potions you make to earn points towards your victory or drink them, lowering their value but giving you an extra benefit.
Alchemy! is simple to play and features a mix of art from medieval alchemy books and more quirky, original art for the magical potions that players compete to build.

Pricing and Kickstarter:
Alchemy! will eventually retail for $30 - backing a project on Kickstarter requires a lot of faith, so we're not doing an 'early bird' special, we're just selling it for less and including the Kickstarter extras at no extra charge. Backing any game before it goes to print is 'early' enough to warrant a thank you, in our opinion.
(see below for more complete description)
I don't think of these as rewards, so much as credit where credit is due.
All backers at any tier will be listed in the 'thank you' section of our website. Backers at the "Impatient Alchemist" tier will be listed as testers in our rulebook and backers at "Influential Alchemist" and "Famous Alchemist" tier will receive a 'designer' credit and acknowledgment of the card they helped us out with both on the card and in the rulebook.
Receive a print and play version of Alchemy! Great for trying out the game yourself and with friends.
Apprentice Alchemist ($25)
Get Alchemy! Delivered to your door when the game is completed, as well as Kickstarter backer exclusives and bonus cards. The game will retail for $30 and this level, and all levels above it, will include materials we add as Kickstarter stretch goals.
Impatient Alchemist: ($75)
You don't want to wait. We're flattered. In addition to the Alchemist's Apprentice level we'll send you a beta of the game as soon as the Kickstarter ends, playable and ready to go (though art and art and game mechanics may change- this is a beta). This will be professionally prototyped on playing card stock and sent in tuckboxes. You'll need to supply your own counters. We'd love to hear your feedback too.
Famous Alchemist: ($150)
You're famous! We'll add in an extra Kickstarter exclusive alchemist card depicting you (or a person you designate) as a famous alchemist. We'll work with you to come up with a special ability and every Kickstarter backer at the Apprentice level or above get a copy of your card. (see below for info on Alchemist cards). Your name will appear on the card as 'designed by'. Elena will work from a photo you provide to make a custom card for you. You'll also receive everything the Alchemist's Apprentice level receives. We'll also give you 2 sheets of copies of your card (36 cards in total) to do with as you please.
Influential Alchemist: ($160)
Invent a potion! We'll add in an extra Kickstarter exclusive potion card based on your idea. Tell us a theme and name for a potion and we'll work with you to come up with artwork and a cool effect for the potion and a copy will be sent to EVERY Kickstarter backer at the apprentice level or above. Your name will appear on the card as 'designed by'. Potion concepts need to be appropriate for a family friendly game. You'll also receive everything the Alchemist's Apprentice level receives. We'll also give you 2 sheets of copies of your card (36 cards in total) to do with as you please.
Kickstarter Bonus cards:
All Kickstarter backers at $25 or above will get a set of Kickstarter alchemist cards (these will NOT come with the retail version). These cards add an optional element to the game where players can each randomly become one famous alchemist and get a special ability that sticks with them throughout the game. The list of famous alchemists will include Theophrastus, Albertus Magnus and Sir Isaac Newton just to name a few, and a handful of Kickstarter backers.
We made it! Now the game gets even better!
$10,000: Game is funded!
$12,000: Play Mats - Alchemy! is being produced in its current state with vial and cauldron cards which are the same size as the rest of the cards in the deck. If we come up with the money we'll get 'player mats' produced- heavy sheets which contain a space for tokens in your vial and your cauldron, as well as a designated spot for your equipment card. Similar to those used in games like "Bang!" or Puerto Rico.
$14,500: Lab Upgrade - A bigger lab fits more people. Now the game will have all that you need to go up to 8 players including a handful of extra cards and alternate rules designed to keep game flowing for a more full house. In order to support all that wear and tear the cards will be upgraded to the next grade of stock quality, bluecore. We'll also throw in a couple of extra cards that were cut initially to save on printing costs.
$16,000: Duel! - introducing rules for at least one two player variant for Alchemy!
$18,000: Game Board - A fold out gameboard to help organize play- includes a 'transmutation table' which can be used to randomize which components transmute into which elements.
$20,000: On the go version - a 200mm x 200mm drawstring bag and tuckboxes added to the game so that you can bring it with you wherever you go without having to lug the box around.
$25,000: Potion upgrades - the 4 point version of all of the basic potions will get fancy extra illustrations that will visually differentiate them from the 3 point versions and show off something about the character of the potion.
$30,000: An expansion! An expansion based around the addition of a fifth element that backers will name! All backers at $25 and above will get a print and play of this expansion and the option to buy a printed beta for an extra $15.
More is on the way!
All art and assets used in this Kickstarter are in beta and may change slightly before final release.
Risks and challenges
Alchemy! already exists in a playable form using a mix of placeholder art and public domain images. In order to complete the project we'll need the following:
•Get high resolution versions of all necessary images
•Final layout for all cards
We've already got quotes from various printers and are making a decision about quality and price, illustrations and layout will be provided by Elena over the next few months and final playtesting is under way. All we need is the support of our Kickstarter backers to get together the money for a first printing run and make Alchemy! a hit.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We added two player rules as a stretch goal and hit it. Two player rules aren't up yet because we haven't finished testing and balancing them- suffice to say that the basic mechanics will be the same.
Unfortunately no- the Kickstarter extras are meant to be just for people who support us early. I'm concerned that if the P&P includes files to simply produce those extras that it will make those less of an awesome thing to own.
With that said, I'm thinking of putting in an add-on for P&P level backers which simply adds a hard copy of the extras *only*. I'm not sure how people feel about that. Message me and let me know.
Short answer: Yes, we recommend 13 and up, but younger kids could certainly understand it and parents are unlikely to find any of the material contained within this game unsuitable for children.
Alchemy is a kid friendly game in the sense that it contains no realistic violence (occasionally people may blow everything up with a magic potion, but nobody gets stabbed or maimed) and no sexual themes. It is exceedingly unlikely that anyone would be offended by its content.
The mechanics of the game are relatively simple as compared to the likes of Puerto Rico, Smallworld or other excellent not-yet-classic board games which people who are into board games all know and love. That said, the complexity of the game lies in the strategy and might go over the head of a much younger child even though the grasp the basic mechanics and understands how to play.
So, judge for yourself, I'm fairly confident that anyone over 13 years of age could have fun playing it.
It's pretty simple- just add the price of your add-on to your pledge without adjusting your reward tier. At the end of the campaign there will be a questionnaire which lets you tell me what add-ons you've purchased.
The answer is a firm 'maybe'.
The base 10 alchemist cards will likely be sold as a mini expansion if there's interest at some point in the future.
The alchemist and potion cards created by backers at the Legendary Alchemist, Influential Alchemist and Famous Alchemist tiers *may* be available as part of this mini-expansion. Every backer at these levels will get to decide whether they want the card they help to create to be a Kickstarter exclusive or if they want it to be available in one of these expansion packs which might be produced.
The best way to guarantee that you'll get these cards is by backing the project.
We're looking VERY hard into reducing the cost of international shipping, but we've set it at $15-$20 (depending on the tier) to make sure that we don't go broke trying to get you your reward.
Backers in Canada will likely be able to pay slightly less- we should know soon.
For European backers we're looking into fulfillment that will cost less, but it seems like $15-$20 is close to the actual shipping and handling charge. Rest assured that we will do *everything* we can to reduce these costs and will make sure to reduce the shipping requirement accordingly if we do.
If you want to take matters into your own hands remember that you can add extra copies of the game, including KS extras for $25 without incurring extra S&H charges. I encourage European backers to get in touch with one another (you can use the comments here to find one another) and combine orders with other people in your area to save money. You could even go to your local gaming store and see if they'd like in- I can potentially even give them a discount on the normal version of the game if they want to add that into the order as well.
I am genuinely sorry that backers in other countries have to pay more. I would be (and often am) annoyed to have to pay international shipping on games as well. If you can't afford it I hope you'll at least consider picking up the P&P version so that you can check out the gameplay.
The core game is 144 cards. There may be up to 40 backer cards and a handful (maybe as many as 20) for the 2 and up to 8 player variants.
The expansion will probably include 90-100 cards.
90 without sleeves- roughly 50 with sleeves.
If you want to carry your backer extra cards and variant cards around with you you may want to buy an extra tuckbox.
If you want to use sleeves for the core game and carry the cards in tuckboxes you should get 1 extra tuckbox - 2 if you also want to carry the backer cards.
The expansion should fit in 1 tuckbox snugly or 2 tuckboxes with room to spare. It should fit in 2 tuckboxes in sleeves.
If you want to be ABSOLUTELY SURE you can fit everything in the game+expansion+kickstarter extras in sleeves in tuckboxes you should buy a total of 4 extra tuckboxes.
A full run of something from our main printer has a minimum of 1500 units. Since the expansion probably won't even have half of that we can't get the cards made at the same printer- therefore we're going with the same company that produces our prototypes. They use a high quality stock and the cards are the same size, but they won't be a perfect match. Therefore we're calling it a beta/prototype. The cards will still be of high quality, ready to play with, able to be shuffled, etc.
If, at some point in the future, we do a full run of the expansion anyone who bought the printed beta- including anyone who buys the Platinum Founder's Edition will be contacted and given the opportunity to buy a copy of the official first print run of the expansion at cost (to me) plus shipping and not a single penny more.
Yes. Even in sleeves and tuckboxes, yes.
