365 Days of New Music is a project I came up with towards the end of 2012. I wanted to find new bands to listen to but had no success using algorithm-based websites like Pandora. I thought about the music I enjoyed and realized that much of it came from going to shows and finding new music to love from many of the opening acts I had seen.
Obviously, I could not go to shows every single night, so instead, I decided to listen to a new band each day, choosing them at random. I scoured the event calendars of local venues around New York City and even some from around the country to compile my list of 365 bands to listen to throughout 2013. I tweeted the daily band I had listened to each day, wrote recaps featuring my favorites from each month for The Ruckus, and was even featured in Library Journal.
After a successful year, I decided to do it again for 2014, but wanted to do something bigger. I started a tumblr for this project that posts a track from each artist every day, but thought I could do something even better than that. Over the winter, I came up with the idea to do live acoustic sessions with some of the bands featured. Most of these bands are just starting out and may not be very well known, and I hope through this project and the proposed live sessions that they can be exposed to even more new listeners.
The goal of this project is to fund a series of live acoustic sessions that will be recorded over the course of 2015.
The base goal of $250 is the minimum I'd need to get this project started. Anything beyond that can fund other productions costs to enhance the quality of the filmed sessions, so the more this project receives, the better it can be!
I wanted to share with you some very early sketches done for the 365 Days of New Music print to give you an example of what I had in mind. I am very pleased with the corgi sketches that Alyssa drew up and cannot wait for the final design, which will feature puppies and kittens!
I am so grateful to everyone who has helped make this successful so far. Thanks again for your support!
Over the past few days, I've reached out to some of my favorite musicians that I found out by doing this project to see if they'd be interested in collaborating. I was so happy with the response and I happy to announce a tentative list of potential sessions for next year! More details can be found in the updates section.
Risks and challenges
I am not a professional musician nor do I have experience in filming and editing video, so there will be learning curve in doing this. However, the biggest challenge is finding a location to do these recordings. I have bands that are interested in participating, so if this fundraising project is successful, I will have the first sessions up by the beginning of next year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
