What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

How it started

It was a cold and dark night... He had just finished a show. Running the lights. He was frustrated as the scribble in the manuscript made no sense. Misreading his own scribble had caused him to miss a cue and threw him off track. "Why is this happening to me?" [cue: LOUD THUNDER]

It was a night in the theatre never to be heard of again. [Mikkel exit stage, clearly frustrated]

Mikkel posts his frustrations on Facebook [typing hard on his keyboard]. Asking if anyone would help him fix this nightmare of poorly written notes, odd cues and maybe make Theatre more digital. Helle responds [cheerful]. "We can do so much more than just cues. Let us fix the cast list, rehearsal scheduling and stage plans on the iPad. I know just the guy to call". Anders is the go-to guy when it comes to developing websites and mobile apps. With many years of experience, Anders loves and always ready for a challenge.

The three of them teams up and makes the first mockups of Cue-to-Cue. [standing close smiling] They visit theatres all over town and gets positive feedback [sound of footsteps and applause]. They start developing the first version of the app, a singleuser version, in their own time and from their own pockets. [The app has been available in AppStore since January]

Where to go from here

Now they want to take this project to the next level by making a version of Cue-to-Cue that the crews and casts can share, by working in the same script. No more printing hundreds of pages. No more handwritten comments into different manuscripts [firm gaze toward the future]

Together we can make Theatre backstage digital. We need your help to make this a multi-user version of the app. If you help us reach the funding goal, we can have this app ready by this summer.

Kind regards from

Mikkel, Helle and Anders

Risks and challenges

The main challenge is to secure data so that everyone trusts their precious notes on the ipads. We already have a solution to that whereby all the data will be backed up to the cloud.
In addition to that, we are currently working on a clever solution to migrate changes made by 10+ people working on the same script.
We are also making it a priority to make a system that is easy to use even for non-technical Theatre people. This is our point of departure. This app is made by Theatre people for Theatre people. We know the jargon and the ways to working. We know this should be as easy as pen and paper (stacks of paper).
