Surely, you have heard about 3D printing already. You know what it is, you know what it can do, and you’ve heard that it’s the next big thing – the technology of the future! Probably, you have also heard that it’s actually affordable. No longer the thing that only Richie Rich can buy – YOU can get it too!
But what are you going to do with it? Is it really of any use to you? Would you know what to print with it? How to design the thing you want to print? Would you even know how to make that thing looks like you want it to look? How to actually print it, once you know?
Above all, the question is: could 3D printing really be something that just about anyone can do? Even you? Or is it only a fancy thing for tech-savvy geeks you see on the Big Bang Theory, but not in real life?

1. What you'll learn with StarterMate
The 3D printing process begins with an idea. To translate that idea into an object, you need to do some 3D modeling using specialized software. A bit like rocket science really, if you look at the software out there that is supposed to help you.

StarterMate Online teaches you all you need to know about 3D printing through a unique, cloud-based platform that we designed especially for you. You won’t find any complicated 3D modeling software there, nor any finished objects ready for download. What you will find is a step-by-step guide on how to make your own designs, print them and put a finishing touch to make your little creations look perfect. Yeah, you heard right – Your OWN products, designed by YOU!
Step-by-step tutorials guide you through the whole process - modeling as well as retouching the desired object, and finally preparing it for 3D printing. No more roaming around the Internet for complex software solutions.
You'll be also able to modify an object downloaded from the Internet to your particular needs. You simply need to upload the STL or OBJ file to our platform. On top of that, you'll learn the 3D printing techniques as well as finishing the object tips and tricks.
2. How you'll learn
The tutorials we have developed come with a little task each week. These weekly tasks introduce you to what’s possible in the world of 3D printing – be it beautiful, practical or simply indispensable. You are assigned a small modeling project every week – simple, but designed to trigger your imagination. It sets off the creative spark, so to speak, while making you work on something concrete and tangible at the same time. This way, you are challenged to be creative and get to put your 3D modeling skills to the test as you move along.
If you still can't get enough, and we know you won't once you have started, you can join our community and compete with other creators in our monthly 3D printing challenge. Get inspired by your peers and show off what you have learned through our kit!
You’ll be able to proudly upload pictures of your creation on our platform and compete with the other users for best creations of the current contest. The winners will be awarded, of course ☺. This way you'll be able to advance your 3D modeling and 3D printing skills with every new challenge successfully accomplished.
3. What perk to choose in order to get the maximum out of your learning?
You are able to choose out of three packages:
- StarterMate Online
- StarterMate Basic kit
- StarterMate Premium kit
Which one of those you’d choose depends on how deep you’d like to get engage in our teaching program and what tools and material you’d need to get your objects printed and finished. For instance, if you want to simply give it a try with the modeling part only, and you probably have all the materials and tools related to the 3D printing itself, you’d rather go with the StarterMate Online. On the other hand, if you have troubles finding the appropriate materials and tools for 3D printing or simply want to save time out of it, you’d rather choose one of the extended StarterMate kits – basic or premium – where you have the StarterMate Online included along with great quality filaments and finishing tools (you’ll learn more about our filaments and tools below in the text).Here’s the differences between the above mentioned options explained in a graphic:

Chances are, your best friend or that shop around the corner you passed by the other day already has one – and with our kit, you’ll know how to make use of it for the world to marvel at your stuff.
PLA Filament and finishing tools
Inside the boxes of the StarterMate Basic and StarterMate Premium kits you’ll find an easy-to-use filament for FDM 3D printers - Filamate’s PLA in a special protection box. On top of that, we’ve also included all the necessary tools you’d need to finish your prints off in a few easy steps.
Filamate's filament is made of a high quality PLA (poly-lactic acid) blend. It is 100% biodegradable and the easiest material to use. The filament itself is packaged in a cardboard box and it stays inside it until it is completely used up. This keeps your filament free from dust and dirt, while the box exit is also protected with filter to clean the filament just before entering the extruder head of your printer. As the filament is meant to be used without unpacking it, there is a scale indicating how much it is left from your filament. The spool is rotating on an axle, built-in inside the box. The holder (included) gives you the freedom to simply place the box on your desk, on the top of your printer or even inside it, which makes the filament printer-agnostic, i.e. it fits any FDM 3D printer on the market.
In the StarterMate Basic kit the above mentioned holder is also the storage place for the finishing tools.
*Filament's diameter: you'll be requested to select the desired diameter of the filament(s) included in the kit after the campaign - i.e. 1,75 mm or 2,85 mm (it depends on your FDM 3D printer's parameters).
Our step-by-step tutorials will guide you not only through the 3D modeling and 3D printing process, but also through all the steps for finishing the printed object to the desired look. It will be explained what is the purpose of each tool included in the kit as well as when and how it comes into use.

Risks and challenges
Our biggest efforts we put in making all the products as easy and as comprehensive as possible. The most challenging one from them is of course the designing platform. Making such kind of application easy to use is something that barely anyone has achieved so far.
