Written and Directed By: Gerard Hurley
Executive Producer: Jim Stark
"Among other pictures drawing positive notice was Gerard Hurleyʼs beautifully composed, gorgeously acted The Pier. It tells a common story in Irish literature and film: the returning emigrant confronts what has changed and what has remained the same. The director plays a man who, told his father (Karl Johnson) is dying, travels from New York to Cork to discover the old codger looking a little healthier than expected. An amusing, touching battle of wills then develops. The picture never comes close to striking a bum note."
Donald Clarke - The Irish Times Film Critic
WHY ARE WE RAISING MONEY?
We've made it this far. THE PIER is as an award winning film that has been well received in film festivals all over the world...yet...we still need to get the funds to place it in U.S theaters for a limited run. All money raised will serve the purpose to make certain that THE PIER is seen by an audience...here's hoping that it will be seen with your help.
"In The Pier, it was important to me to stay honest and show humble people bravely facing their lives. I wanted to honor the part of the world I come from - a place which is generally glossed over by a cloud of vapid clichés in Hollywood movies." --Gerard Hurley, THE PIER Director/Writer/Actor
AN AWARD WINNING FILM WITH BIG HEART & SMALL FUNDS
THE PIER was made with only a micro budget of $100,000 Euros (at the time the exchange rate would be approx $130,000 U.S). Despite all odds it has had enormous success at over 30 International festivals. We've come this far, and THE PIER deserves to be seen on the big screen. We have a reasonable request for funds so that we can screen in the major cities across the U.S for a limited run. We can do this if we hit our goal on Kickstarter.
Let's face it, even though our film is called "a little gem" by The Irish Times...it still needs to be seen. Please help us to make that happen.
BEATING THE ODDS
The Cork Independent writes:
The returning emigrant is often filled with conflicted thoughts about Ireland and this is captured beautifully in the film. Hurley shares this apparently contradictory attitude too.
“I feel a deep sadness and anger when I think of Ireland because it’s one of the most beautiful places on the planet and there is a depth and beauty to the Irish psyche, but also a strain of conformity that allowed us to be manipulated historically by the church and the British and in contemporary times by corrupt politicians, the elite and the trappings of consumerism.
“Now that everything has collapsed economically and a lot of people are hurting, my hope is that people will rise and take back what’s theirs,” he adds.
However his reason for making the film was not to highlight this but something entirely different. “Basically I wanted to honor the world I come from; not just West Cork but culturally and emotionally as a person who comes from rural Ireland.
“I am sick to death of the stupid way we are portrayed in cinema as a race, of course there have been exceptions but they are few and far between.”

Risks and challenges
WHY WE NEED YOU?
A decade ago, internationally known Irish Filmmakers were few and far between.
We've made advances but despite significant critical acclaim...filmmakers are still struggling to get Irish films into the world where they belong. Luckily IFB and other amazing organizations have joined to support in spreading the word on THE PIER, as well as other films that are having a hard time reaching a wider audience. They believe that it is important to support our film and to give it a fighting chance to succeed by promoting our film. However THE PIER team has to crowd source in order to reach the final piece of the puzzle, and raise the final money needed for U.S Distribution.
Gerard wrote, and directed this film...and managed to raise the $100,00 Euros (equaling approx $130,000 U.S) needed to create it with the help of some very talented people including veteran Producer, Jim Stark. It's not a matter of if the film gets made...it's a matter of helping us to place it into theaters so that the audience can enjoy a film made on sheer guts, heart, and limited funds.
With that said a challenge we may need to overcome in completing THE PIER's goal of distribution and fulfilling your rewards would be the time frame. Once we receive funding from kickstarter, we will have to arrange theatrical distribution. That time frame may change (for theatrical premiere rewards) and we will make certain to update our backers, as well as honor their rewards (making sure to tell you in ample time so that you can still attend our premiere) via updates.
In addition the Q & A with Jim Stark will have to work according to his schedule as time allows. However we will have at least two time availabilities and dates to confirm.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
