Radio Margate will be an online broadcasting platform and community space presenting everything coming from, passing through or influencing the creative scene in Margate.
Our goal is to launch a cross-genre internet radio station, which we also hope to make home to talk radio shows covering a wide variety of topics: culture, social issues, arts, debates, radio plays, experimental imaginings and all other things close to the hearts of those who live in, or visit our amazing town.
We want to bring together the continually evolving community of Margate and establish a modern platform for cultural exchange.
The founding partners are Obaro and Kate Ejimiwe.
Obaro is a twice Mercury nominated recording artist that goes by the name Ghostpoet and has been part of several international projects that use music to bring communities together, including Africa Express and Mix The City.
Kate Ejimiwe is a creative director and designer that works with numerous brands that combine her passions for design, innovation and social good - Google, Nike, The Natural History Museum, Ikea to name a few. We moved to Margate in 2016 after falling in love with seaside life and are both equally passionate about the role music and culture have in creating community.
The response to our initial call for DJs and producers has been overwhelming and more eclectic and exciting than we had ever imagined it might be.
We have a wealth of amazing talents and organisations from around the UK expressing interest and we're keen to work with as many interesting parties as possible to create a diverse and inclusive programme of music and discussion that is accessible to all.
Initially we will be live 3 days a week (Fri - Sun) and streaming archive programmes, playlists and repeats the rest of the week, with the hope to expand to 7 days of live programming in the future.
During hours when DJ's are live, our in booth webcams will capture the magic and stream it in real time for free via the web, so that listeners all over the world can tune in and connect with sounds from the edge of the British coast.
We've finally found a place to call home. The station will broadcast from 17 Cliff Terrace (formerly Plinth for Margate locals).
This means we have enough space to stage live music and performances, which will also be streamed online via the station.
Our base on Cliff Terrace will eventually be open 7 days a week as a community space, where all are welcome to come and hang out, work, discover music, eat, drink and enjoy the sea views.
We will be partnering with local foodies to revamp the old kitchen space so that we can provide delicious menus throughout the year.
We believe that music and the arts should be open and accessible to all, and that they have a tremendous power to bring people together, and we want to hold that belief at the heart of everything we do as a company.
In time, we hope to open up creative workshops, music production courses, facilities for local talent development, free musical labs for kids and beyond.
But the first step is raising the capital to get the doors open and the mics switched on.
Anyone who donates their time, love and pennies to support this project will receive a joyous shout-out on opening night via the station.
And anyone who goes above and beyond to donate that little bit extra cash can choose from the range of fabulous rewards listed --- >
Risks and challenges
The founding partners are a recording artist and creative director team, both with 10 years + experience bringing large scale commercial creative projects to life.
We want to turn our skillsets to the benefit of our local community.
The major challenge ahead will be managing the day to day running of a radio station and cafe/bar.
Donations made via Kickstarter will go towards the build of the radio studio, renovation of the space, and initial running costs in a bid to keep the station ad free and 100% cost free for listeners always.
We have already received tremendous support from friends and volunteers with a great deal of experience in broadcast, renovations and restaurant management but will continuously be on the hunt for interested parties who can bring their skillsets into the mix.
If you think this project might be for you and would like to get involved further, please feel free to get in touch directly at RadioMargateHQ@gmail.com.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
