“Imagine ‘Law and Order’ on Middle Earth, and you’d have the Chronicles of the Tal Nor.” – R. Lawrence McFee II, Writer of “5 Deals, One Devil.”
Sophie, Kat and the rest of the Tal Nor have returned for a brand new, standalone issue. This is your opportunity to get your hands on the comic before anyone else. While issue two does build on issue one, it’s a completely self-contained narrative that provides a fantastic jumping-on point for new readers.
The basic idea: Kat and Sophie travel to the outskirts of western Kren -- the edge of their jurisdiction -- to investigate a murder. There, our heroes discover why the town’s mayor felt this was a case only the Rytiers of the Tal Nor could handle. Are they up to the task? Will they find the killer in time?
In this issue, we get to see the girls not only in the heat of battle, but also showing off their investigative prowess. And in one of my favorite scenes, we get our first glimpse of Kat interrogating a suspect (I drew inspiration from “Homicide: Life on the Street” for that particular moment). I hope you’ll have as much fun reading it as I did writing it!
I’m once again joined on this quest by the incomparable Kelsea Jewell, adding her killer line work and mind boggling watercolors. Looking at how she handles light and shadow, I’m convinced it’s some sort of witchcraft. I’m overjoyed that she is back, weaving her magic into this issue. Here’s a little taste of what you’ll find this time around:

We’ve added two new creators to the team. Due to other commitments, the fantastic Rose Petretcz was unable to work on this issue, but we were able to get (as-yet unknown but still talented when sufficiently caffeinated) copy wrangler Jenny Fengler to step up to the plate and take over editorial duties.
The other new member of the team is our cover artist Noella Whitney. Yes, that Noella Whitney: the one who does Broadside (which if you haven’t checked out, you should, because it’s so good http://broadsidecomic.com/). Look at all the awesomeness she’s bringing to the cover!

Funding:
The big question for each Kickstarter campaign is, “What are you going to do with the money?” In our case, I’m raising funds to help offset the cost of printing the book and to pay for some of the cool swag you’ll get as rewards. That’s it! The rest of the cost of making this comic – writing, art, editorial – is all coming out of pocket. A bonus from my “day job” paid for the first half of the book, and the second half was funded by my tax return. Here are a couple of pie charts (because who doesn’t love a delicious pie chart?), breaking down where your pledge money goes:

If we exceed our goal, there will be some stretch goals, and the extra money will go toward bringing the comic to new comic cons, as well as toward creating future issues. Now for the bit you’ve all been waiting for...

Risks and challenges
The risks for this Kickstarter are minimal, but real. There is a chance – because there’s always a chance, no matter how slim, right? – that something could happen and we wouldn’t get the book out. There are always little things that could cause delays, but based on how far along we already are in production (thanks again, tax return!), I don’t see anything happening that wouldn’t be insurmountable. With the successful Kickstarter for issue #1 under our belts, I have a high level of confidence that this Kickstarter will be successful as well. Join us for the ride!
