2 Steps Forward 1 Step Back
Firstly please let me apologise for not having been in touch for so long. In part the reason for the silence earlier this year was that our main character Bisi returned to Nigeria in February for a few weeks. We were busy planning to film this as a crucial part of the documentary narrative, but we had to keep these plans secret for Bisi's security.
However, at the 11th hour, our visas were denied, and we were unable to accompany Bisi to film his return trip to Lagos. After much wrangling and attempts to appeal the decision, our only plan B option was to work with a local producer to film his return trip. Despite constant communication, the restrictions of us not being there in person finally showed in the footage we received back.
However, all is not lost, and in response we feel the right decision is to expand the film slightly, drawing upon 2 other characters who grew up with Bisi in Mushin. The film will tell all three stories, casting a wider net on the experiences of LGBT Nigerians in exile.
This does mean that we are in the process of applying for further funds to complete the extra filming, and that the edit and delivery will be moved back later this year. We have come this far, and it made sense for us to aim for a solution which works in the best interest of the film.
We hope you will bear with us until then and we thank you all for your amazing support and patience.
