What is Aterra?
Aterra is a 3D platform game set in the Elemental Plane of Air, which can be imagined most easily like an infinite sky in every direction, with floating chunks of material from other elemental planes.
Our long term goal is to create a rich role-playing experience and Aterra is the first step towards it by setting a unique environment and control system.
Here's the scoop:
Aterra is a single-player, first-person, puzzle-platform video game.
You will play a single, specific character.
The story-driven game will have a rich monologue system.The game will be developed with the Unreal Developement Kit for PC (Windows) platform.The game will be distributed DRM-free. (You’ll be able to get it from Steam, and other DRM-free download options will be made available.)
Here’s a brief summary of our story:
You are Nelor “Ninefingers”, a young and foolhardy master thief, rich beyond imagination and now seeking fame above everything else. Taking any task that seems impossible, stealing unstealable things, one night you break in to the Caliph's palace, disarming magical traps and evading the most skilled guardsmen in the Thirteen Kingdoms. Then, out of the blue everything goes south: just seconds before you, someone takes the mysterious Hand of Munga’ and escapes through an unusual portal. As the alarm is raised, the whole place getting all stirred up like a beehive, with guards swarming in the room you are in. You see no escape route other than the closing portal, so you jump in after your competitor, hoping to catch a break, just to find yourself on a different Plane of existence, where gravity seems to bend to someone’s will. This is where your story starts, in a building built by some unearthly logic which might contain some clues that can reveal the identity of the one who ruined your reputation.
Aterra is an adventure that reaches back to pen and paper RPG-s, and has great emphasis on realism. You'll play the role of a specific individual. You have specific skills as a master thief, and your abilities to interact with your environment and others will change if you put your hands on special equipment or items with magical capabilities. This is one way to customize your abilities and skills, but farther in your adventure you might find others. We’re taking the approach of having you play a specific individual so that we can focus on telling your personal tale.
Aterra is being developed by VVVaVe, a mid-sized independent game developer team located in the United Kingdom and in Hungary. We believe that good games are made, when developers working directly with the players, not publishers. The player’s feedback is our Bible, we embrace it and live by it to fine-tune the core game to your taste.
Why Kickstarter, why now?
Our experience with crowd funding has been wonderfully positive for us and has opened our eyes to the power of a direct relationship with the gamers. We want to create games in a fashion and style that helped to make the true classics. And along these lines we've abandoned the typical developer/publisher model and placed our future in the hands of gamers who don’t want their game’s design filtered through financial decisions. We've embraced the crowd in every aspect. YOU are our publisher...and you are the best publisher we've ever worked with!
This process allows us to create the games exactly the way you want to see them. There is a purity of development when we can spend 100% of our efforts making the game with an open dialogue throughout the process. We'll start with a strong vision document that details our sensibilities, and from there we'll stay in sync with you, from concept through the execution of the ideas.

We already love this game and we think it's easily going to be worth your money - at the very least it’ll have 10 unique locations, 20 loot/magic items, and will give you hours of enjoyment. But it could be so much more. And it's up to you to make that happen!
Risks and challenges
As you all know, video games are complex projects. Aterra is a small project which is designed to be highly scalable, and it is the first chapter of a longer adventure. We clearly understand what makes this game fun, and focus on those elements. The rest is up to the gamer community - if they find it entertaining, they will decide if they want us to expand the story and the length of the gameplay. We leave it to the wisdom of the crowd how big the game is gonna be. If we don’t get any support, we will still finish the game for fun, but without your support it would take us more time. Waaay more.
This is our first project together as a team. We have great helpers, strong community support and hard working team members. Most importantly, we have a working prototype of the core gameplay mechanics of the game - that was the hardest part and couldn’t be done without our talented lead programmer, who will follow the game through to the finish line.
