Thanks to the Kickstarter community, two years ago we launched Nitroxbuddy, the world's first smartphone based Oxygen analyzer for SCUBA divers.
Since then we received multiple requests to develop a new product that could simultaneously analyze both Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide and that could be used as a stand alone device too.
We listened and, over the last two years, have invested quite some time testing new sensors and defining a new product.
Today we are honored to bring to the Kickstarter community cootwo: the world's first integrated, patent pending, smartphone controlled, dual-gas Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide Analyzer and Data Logger specifically designed for SCUBA divers.
cootwo is a gas analyzer that can be used to measure the percent of Oxygen in a breathing gas while also monitoring presence of Carbon Monoxide.
cootwo includes a factory calibrated Carbon Monoxide sensor, a temperature sensor, an ambient pressure sensor and a user replaceable Oxygen sensor.
cootwo is designed to operate with any Oxygen sensor that provides an output signal in the 7-15 mV range. More specifically, the cootwo housing is designed to accept any of the following Oxygen sensors: Analytical Industries Inc. PSR-11-39-MD, DiveNav Nitroxbuddy O2 sensor, Maxtec MAX-305 and MAX-305F, Teledyne R-22S.
As shown in the image below, cootwo is just a little bit bigger than our existing Nitroxbuddy Oxygen Analyzer.
cootwo also includes also a rechargeable Li-Ion battery that can be charged via a standard USB Micro B port, flash memory to record logs of the analysis and a Bluetooth low energy radio.
The cootwo housing includes a tank adapter so it can be used to analyze a gas directly from SCUBA tanks. Additionally we offer a low pressure BC adapter accessory that mounts directly on the housing.
cootwo could be used in three ways; Smartphone Connected, Stand Alone and Data Logger.
When cootwo is connected to a smartphone it behaves like our current Nitroxbuddy product; the user can program it, calibrate it and perform analysis. Upon completion of an analysis the smartphone creates a log automatically.
When cootwo is in Stand Alone mode, the user initiates an analysis by pressing the button and sees the results on the integrated display. The device will internally save the log of the analysis that could be retrieved later on with the smartphone.
Lastly, cootwo could be used as an environmental data logger to sample and record Temperature, Pressure, Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide content of the surrounding environment. Users will be able to program start and stop dates and times and sampling interval of the logging events.
Please note that settings, calibration and logbook can only be done via the app and require the use of a smartphone / tablet.
On the app front, cootwo will be supported by our My Nitroxbuddy app.
cootwo's innovative architecture and advanced integration allows a diver to analyze both Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide content of a tank without having to use 2 different devices.

We started working on a dual-gas analyzer project more than three years ago and in fall 2012 we had a proof of concept which we demonstrated to selected parties at DEMA 2012.
Unfortunately at that time, the cost and size of Carbon Monoxide sensors were not aligned with our goals so we decided to focus on a single-gas Oxygen analyzer and we launched Nitroxbuddy in summer 2013.
Thanks to recent advances in Carbon Monoxide sensors technology we have decided to resume the project. We have completed the definition of the system and we are now working on the schematics and PCB layout.
In the video below we show the current status of the cootwo development board and test app. More specifically we are showing that we have already implemented the core feature of the product; the capability to collect data from 4 different sensors (temperature, pressure, Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide) and send such data to the smartphone.
We have also completed the design of the housing and have a first 3D printed prototype.
We expect to have pre-production units of the board by early August and we plan to use them for fine-tuning the code and product characterization.
On the app front, our prior work gives us substantial expertise in the design of gas sensing apps and we plan to modify the existing My Nitroxbuddy app (available for both Android and iOS devices) to add support for cootwo . We expect to have a beta version, for both iOS and Android devices, by September and a production version by November.
Upon completion of this Kickstarter campaign we will finalize the design of the housing and proceed with the design and manufacturing of the production molds.
The other major activity is related to product certification and we plan to submit our board to a certified FCC lab to obtain FCC Part 15 certification for USA (and ICES for Canada) and for other countries based on market demand.

Right now we have an early prototype of the housing and a functional lab prototype, but the development of cootwo is not yet finished. We still need to complete the design of the PCB so it could fit the (very small) housing. We also need to build the production molds and modify the Nitroxbuddy app to be compatible with cootwo .

Risks and challenges
cootwo is quite an innovative product that pushes the boundaries of integration and features in gas analyzers for SCUBA divers. While we are on track to begin shipping rewards in December, the challenges of designing and manufacturing this kind of product are significant, and any minor issue in one of the project components could lead to significant delays.
Here are the areas where we see most of the challenges, along with our plans to mitigate the related risks.
While the system architecture is finalized and tested at the bench, we still need to complete the design and testing of the final board, and there are still a few potential risks related to the design that could force us to modify and / or redesign the board. The most critical area is EMI Compliance: cootwo is a wireless product and as such it must meet established regulations. In the design of the cootwo board we will use state-of-the-art methodologies and leverage the RF portion of our existing products (that have already obtained FCC certification). Nevertheless, Radio Frequency design is a "dark-art" and "surprises" are not uncommon.
While we have already identified the manufacturers for the main board, we are still evaluating vendors for the housing and, while we plan to provide them with necessary design documents, there could still be delays in creating production tools, setting up production lines and production test fixtures. To mitigate those risks, we plan to have weekly reviews with the vendors and address any potential issues as soon as we become aware of them.
