Unofficial encyclopedia of the NES classic Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Funding for this project was canceled by the project creator on October 2, 2012.
Use this space to cheer the creator along, ask questions, and talk to your fellow backers. Please remember to be respectful and considerate. Thanks!
Could you post an updated link to the PDF for the book please?
I would really like to read it. Thanks!
+1, please if possible could we get a new drop box link?
12/1/2014 - Please fix the PDF download link.
I want to make this document work on Blurb. Im stuck at the cover upload part. Apparently the cover isnt "exactly" the right size needed as a pdf.
Do I need to use adobe to create more accuracy?
Thanks so much!
I made the same mistake. Click on the Start and Select Buttons. They bring up the PDF's for the cover and for the pages inside your web browser. There is a lag in those PDF's loading, so it might not look like it's working at first.
Am I the only one who still can't see a PDF link? I want this book SO BAD!!!
The PDF download link doesn't work. Can you fix it? Thanks!
Mike Tyson admits he sucks at playing Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!
Congrats on reaching the goal Dan. Such a cool project!
Congrats on your project. I've known Matt Turk for years. He's intensely knowledgeable about the classics and I'd like to see this thing go all the way. Great job guys!
I think i'd pretty much have to buy the printed version of a Mega Man version of this. Yeah, that would have to happen.
Congratulations on getting the funding! Really excited that the first hurdle is cleared, and extremely hopeful that Nintendo can give their blessing soon. I can't emphasize enough how much I'm looking forward to this book.
I've been following this project for awhile and finally got me to sign up for Kickstarter. I just put in for the hardcover book. I hope everything works out to get it printed. Less than $300 away!
This just reminded me of the Mother 3 translation project. They did a print run of a strategy guide, and continue to make pins and posters and stuff related to that game. Not sure if this falls into that category, as screenshots and boxart are constantly used in all forms of media with no implied ownership (think video game magazines..) There's really no reason for Nintendo to HAVE to sign off on this. But that's my take. It's simply a 3rd party item, unauthorized as it is. Nothing new there.
Only about $900 left, good luck!
If funding is short there may still be avenues to get the book out, which can be explored when the project ends.
Thanks for putting this book together, it really looks like a labor of love. I look forward to one day having this in my hands.
But what happens if you are slightly short of funding?
I noticed that with 9-days ago, we are still about $2,500 short.
Will you still go through with the project?
We are so close!
Yeah Mega Man would be awesome. It's the 25th anniversary of MM2 next year...just sayin'.
The book is currently a PDF, which can be converted to a myriad of eBook formats using a range of different software options.
For my level of detail, Mario would be too huge! It would easily surpass 4 books...a true encyclopedia.
I'd love to see a Mega Man version of this - But just Classic Mega Man maybe X - but none of this Battle Network / Starforce stuff... Although Mega Man Powered Up and 9 and 10 can be included. :D
That said, turning your current book into a mobi or a epub wouldn't be hard. You're already set for the PDF, right? You would just need to convert that. iBooks, Nook, Kindle, Play.... it could be on all of those.
Mario would be a good subject too, a lot of the research was already done in a book called Mario Mania by Nintendo Power back in the day. That would cover the early years. I think I still have a copy in my basement.
007 373 5963 - 10 digits that are forever lodged in my brain.
Thanks Marco for breaking the $20k barrier...
4/5 of the way there. Had to pledge when I heard about this, the numbers in my head made me do it, 007 373 5963. Mario Kart seconded...
Thanks Phil -- Super Mario Kart would make an epic book...
Eric, not sure about the work involved to creating a native iPad version! Any volunteers?
that is the coolest deep dive project i have ever seen. brilliant work!!!!! super mario kart request +1
I can't afford the hardcover, but I LOVE this project. It'd be great to have an official iPad ebook version that is maybe a 20 or 30 dollar reward. The pdf is cool and all but it'd be rad to have full digital version.
That sounds like alot of effort. It sounds cool though. I would hope someone would put it on YouTube though. I also hope no one gets arrested for making a scene.
I have an idea as to how you might gain Nintendo's attention regarding this book, it will require some effort though.
If you can organize a gathering of people outside Nintendo of Americas head quarters and have them dressed as boxers from punch out (one with a rose, one with an empty soda bottle another with a turban, bandaid over belly button, so on and so forth) i am sure you will have people looking out through the office windows wondering what is going on, maybe you could get a couple of the boxers to put on a little show (fake sparing match).
Maybe when you see they are looking you could hold up a copy of the book and yell out something like "i want to get this published and i need to speak to one of you to do so" something along those lines.
And if you get someone with a camera on hand they can take some happy snaps and send them out to game websites (ign, kotaku, gametrailers etc. etc.) with a bit of info on what was going on, which may will bring more people here to the Kickstarter page.
This is of course a best case scenario, i don't know what the laws are like in America and they might get in trouble from the police for something or another, so i would look into that before trying anything like this.
Anyway just an idea, take it as you will. :)
Um, ok. Not sure you needed to post that comment.
I'm not sure if i want this book or need this book.
Thanks Ronjan -- I have a few ideas for the next book, but not thinking about it too much...
This looks incredible. I hope all permissions go through, and either way you have made me a buyer of any books you create in the future. Any thoughts on your next project, or taking it one at a time? A lot of great anniversaries coming up ....
This was probably my favorite game for the nes. I still play it today. Along with super punch out and punch out for the Wii.
When i saw this kick starter i knew i needed to be involved. I hope this gets funded.
Solid points Daniel. I've re-iterated my approach in the latest project update.
I will start to aggressively contact Nintendo from next week as the project now has great momentum. I've also been contacted by someone who works closely with Nintendo, which I will follow up on.
I'm aware I'll personally lose 10% to do a full refund, but sometimes you have to just go for it! It would only become a problem over $40,000 so I'll cross that bridge if I ever come to it.
If a refund was inevitable I would contact all backers first to see if anyone would optionally donate $10 for just the digital version (not worried about copyright because similar to any fan website with a donate button).
I really want this to happen, the book looks fantastic... but i have my doubts about this project.
If this project makes it's required $25,000 goal, there is no guarantee that Nintendo will green light the production of this book, further more you have not been able to get in contact with them i don't see how this will change when the kickstarter is over, you need to contact them before the kickstarter is over and get there okay.
Further more if you reach the $25,000 and Nintendo stops you from making the book you will need to refund the entire amount to the people that have pledged, have you taken into account the 5% that kickstarter will take and the 3 to 5% amazon will take, that money will have to come out of your pocket to be refunded to the people that pledged, just on $25,000 you will need to hand over $2,500 out of your pocket and the higher the amount is them more you will have to fork out, are you prepared for this outcome?
I wish you the best of luck and am willing to up my pledge from $1 to $125 if you can provide evidence that Nintendo has given you the go ahead to make and distribute these books before the end of the kickstarter.
Well, since no one else is going to say it...50%!!!
Well played Vangough for the $1 to place funding at $9,999...
Sure thing! You can either purchase using a second account or increase your original pledge and I'll know to send you a second copy. Cheers.
I just backed the TKO package, can I also back the package with just the hard cover book? so I would get two copies and be able to give one as a gift? Thanks great project.
I would love to keep making new books about every 6 months!
Pixel Perfect: Metal Gear?
Pixel Perfect: Mega Man?
Pixel Perfect: Super Mario Bros. 3?
Just need the right support (community, editor, designer, printer)!
If this does well, do you have plans to do books on other retro games as well?
This looks fantastic; very excited to see the finished project! :)
Seems a bit harsh, but it's your money.
I'm pretty sure the only reason those records exist is because the site Speed Demos Archive only accepts runs on the original consoles. To see the best in action visit: http://speeddemosarchive.com/PunchOut.html
well cant back the project then
Thanks for making me aware of the Virtual Console records (http://www.wii-records.com/en-us/records.php…).
Unfortunately the times are slower than those already in the book and because the Virtual Console is an emulation, I can't justify a whole new column. Sorry!
Yeah you need to add the virtual console records for punch out!
The book has a page dedicated to records, which you can review at: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/27314354/records.jpg (apologies for the low quality)
Let me know if you believe there should be any amendments and I will review them!
Awesome book! Any plans on including the world records? I still have 4 of them on the Wii Virtual Console version of this game.
Thanks for the support Roger! There will be a maximum of 25 limited hardcovers and people can have whatever number they want "first come first served" -- just let me know.
Also, if funding is successful I'd love to get a few extra signatures in the limited edition book (e.g. Adelikat, RedTom), but no promises!
Hiaya! MTPO is my favorite NES game and this book looks great!
How many copies are being made of the limited hardcover book and what decides which number you'll get?
