Hello, we are UK based artists Duncan McKellar and David Martin and with your help, we will stage an incredible art event towards the end of 2017 that will promote peace, tolerance and unity at one of the most contentious dividing lines of them all. The USA Mexico border.
Reflect - a ray of hope.
We aim to create a simple yet ground breaking film and series of photographs recording 100 people standing in a perfectly straight line, crossing the USA/Mexican border.
50 Mexicans on one side, 50 Americans on the other, each spaced 10 metres apart. Each mask will cover only the top half of each person’s face. In the strong desert sun these masks will reflect a dazzling sun flash back to a series of video cameras (static and drones).
These flashes will join together to become a single brilliant light burning across the border. A ray of hope.
Everything from beginning to end will be recorded to create the most beautiful film and series of photographs, that will demonstrate to the whole world that when we work together we can do amazing things. It will look remarkable.
Each person in the line will have their own thoughts about the border now and their fears for the future. We want our film to give those most affected a voice and the opportunity to tell the world.
The project will welcome people local to the area (currently shortlisted as the Sierra Vista region of Arizona, USA / Sonora, Mexico) from all walks of life, regardless of their age, gender, race, sexuality or physical ability. The lower half of their faces will be exposed to reveal this diversity. 100 identical masks worn by 100 very different people, all standing together as one.
As Reflect is about people working together to create something amazing, we thought it would be most appropriate to use crowd funding, so here we are!
Your investment will enable us to further test, plan, promote and implement our artwork down to the very last detail. This is your chance to be part of something spectacular. We have tested the idea in a country not known for it's sunshine (UK) and it really works - imagine how it will look in the desert? We have made all of the masks and we are now ready to take the project to the next level and make it happen.
We have some great rewards on offer to investors, unique or limited edition, big or small from hand printed mirror badges, original painted canvasses, even your chance to send a handwritten postcard to Mr President himself.
Your investment, big or small can make you part of this truly amazing project. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
We have built and tested the masks, and they work brilliantly.
Our biggest obstacle currently is deciding which out of our current shortlist of potential locations (three so far) will best deliver the required natural beauty for the film/event setting and access to within five metres either side of the border fence/wall for our overall 10 metre participant spacing.
To address this we have already reached out to local border communities through skype and facebook (through mainly 'Indivisible' groups - See https://www.indivisibleguide.com/act-locally/ ) in our desired current locations and have, so far, had exceptionally warm and willing feedback, as well as kind offers of help. We are however still open to suggestions from any border communities who would like us to highlight their region and the issues they face as a result of the border. So, if you know the ideal spot for us to do this, it's not too late to offer your suggestions.
Local support will further help us identify line participants, working with local border authorities regarding permits and general logistical support and advice. In terms of dealing directly with Mexican authorities in Spanish we also have a Mexican national as part of our project team.
We clearly want the Kickstarter campaign to enable us to promote the project not only in terms of funding but also exposure to logistical support. We also plan to contact local TV, radio and press outlets as the planning phase develops, asking for those willing to help us to get in touch.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
