About this project

Nutcracker is a family favorite during the holidays and for many has become a family tradition.  The magic of Bruce Steivel's Nutcracker has mesmerized audiences of all ages in Las Vegas, Reno and San Mateo.  The one thing we hear over and over again from our San Mateo audience  is "it’s too bad you don't have live music".

In March of 2015, Bay Pointe Ballet Artistic Director Bruce Steivel and Conductor Derek Tam were commissioned to perform Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals.  Steivel and Tam started talking about how essential live music was for ballet, though the expense often proves to be too great an obstacle.  Tam went to the drawing board, sharpened his pencil and came up with a reasonable budget. After a bit more discussion, Steivel and Tam announced they were planning on adding an orchestra to Bay Pointe Ballet’s 2015 production of Nutcracker.  All that was left to do was raise the funds.

Tam is hand picking musicians to become the first Bay Pointe Ballet Orchestra.  Performances will take place at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center on December 12, 13, 19 and 20.All four performances will include a live orchestra.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest possible obstacle after funding is hiring musicians at the budgeted pay scale. Nutcracker opportunities are plenty. While fewer and fewer ballet companies are hiring an orchestra to accompany their Nutcracker, there is still enough competition for musicians to be a potential problem. It is possible, therefore, that we will have to pay musicians more than budgeted. While Tam is confident he will be able to adhere to the budget, we may have to do some additional fundraising to meet musician payroll.

Once funding and hiring the musicians are accomplished, there are no other foreseeable obstacles.
