Meet Hoot.

Hoot is a brand new party game that brings out your witty side. The rules are pretty easy: create phrases from random strings of letters. You’ll be trying to impress your friends by creating the best acronym for a given category, and most definitely writing something ridiculous down. Guaranteed belly laugh and inside joke creator.

It's similar to Cards Against Humanity- except that every single time you play it it's different, depending on whatever insanity you or your friends think up. Most importantly, it's a Hoot.

How to Play:

A word game built for people who hate word games. Hoot takes under 30 seconds to understand. You can play for 5 minutes, or you can keep the game rolling until you get sick of it. Up to you. Here's how it works:

Each round, one player is a judge. First, the judge selects a category card.

The judge then rolls the dice, and takes out that number of letter tiles from the bag.

Players must then write a phrase for which those letters are an acronym! If you rolled a 4, and pulled out HOOT, you might write:

The judge reads out the phrases, and picks a winner. The winner keeps the letter tiles, and the player with the largest stack of tiles at the end wins the game! So easy to learn, but produces endless and always original fun. Your friends who love games will love it, and your friends who usually hate games will love it even more.

Some Rules & Add Ons

Here's some things that keep Hoot running smoothly:

  • Acronyms must be in the correct order of the letters, with no added words, but punctuation and creative spelling are both fair game!
  • There's no time limit, but social pressure seems to move it along pretty quickly.

Looking to shake things up? The OG Hoot is enough entertainment to be different each time, but if you're looking to put a twist on it, here's a few ways!

  •  Speed Rounds: Set a timer for 2 minutes, and have players write down as many as they can think up. It's a good way to create weird phrases, fast.
  •  Crosswords: As you play (and win), create words out of the letter tiles you've won. See if you can connect them!
  •  Final Round: At the very end, have each player create one final, jumbo acronym from all the letter tiles they won through out the game. It's a nice way to finish off strong.

What You Get

Each copy of Hoot comes with everything you need to start making silly acronyms with 6 friends. To add more, just find more writing utensils and paper scraps- the game will never end! What's in the box:

  • 32 Category Cards featuring custom illustrations
  • 90 Letter tiles
  • 1 Custom, 20 sided dice to determine the length of your acronym
  • 6 Mini pencils
  • 6 Notepads
  • Instructions

The tin: Hoot comes in a lovely, 7 x 4 inch tin meaning it's light and easy to take with you wherever you go. And yes, we've play tested it in the backcountry.

What's behind it?

Hoot was designed and created by Kika Macfarlane, a student at Quest University Canada and digital designer. The game came about almost on accident- after driving people a little crazy on road trips by turning every license plate into a phrase, Kika realized she might have stumbled upon something deliciously fun and weird. The design, development, and psychology of Hoot are also part of Kika's undergraduate thesis project.

Why Kickstarter? Truly, the dream is to just share Hoot and all the laughter it brings with as many people as possible. There is no place like Kickstarter when it comes to community and games, especially for small scale projects and new games like ours. We can't wait to see what the Kickstarter community thinks of Hoot!

So how's it being made?

Since it's both her thesis project and the pride of her life, Kika is working around the clock to make sure Hoot makes it out of her dreamland and in to the hands of people who will actually enjoy playing it. To create the custom pieces as we needed, Hoot will be manufactured overseas. To make that happen, we're partnering with Fulfillrite to ensure it gets from the manufacturer, into your hands. Fulfillrite is one the most trusted shipping facilities on Kickstarter! (Click on their logo to see what they do!)

Timeline & Money Talk

As a lot of you probably know, manufacturing a product (especially a crowdfunded one) takes time. We've done a lot of the grunt work ensuring our manufacturer can make Hoot and deliver it on time!

  •  October 2018: Kickstarter campaign launches
  •  November 2018: Kickstarter ends, manufacturing begins!
  •  December 2018 to February 2019: Production & shipment
  •  March 2019: Hoot is sent out to all of you lovely folks!

So where's the money going? Good question! My funding goal is set simply to cover the cost of producing the first manufacturing round of Hoot, shipping it to you, and some of the expenses to get us to this point.

What happens if you raise more than the funding goal? Right now, my funding goal is set to purchase 500 units, give one or more to each of my backers, and then sell whatever Kickstarter backers don't buy up. If somehow the funding goal is surpassed (that would be very cool), I'll be able to order 1000 (or more) copies of the game and continue selling them online at the Hoot website, and eventually on Amazon!

Thanks, baby owls.

Hoot did not come about by itself. Special thanks:

  • the product design program at University of Wales Trinity St. David
  • every student and faculty at Quest University Canada
  • the creative crew at Goatsocial
  • Jeremy & Caylin A-Frame Brewing
  •  Ben Grayzel for his wicked film skills and endless kindness.
  • Rachel, Tala, and Matt for laughing in the video!
  • Mathias and Tala for giving me enough advice to almost claim 50% invention rights
  • Andrew Luba and Oscar Bonilla Jr. for the Kickstarter advice and kindness
  • Eva Schipper for teaching me to be a good designer and dog loving human.

A special thank you to everyone who played at the earliest stages- Mathias, Wilson, Anne, Tom, Rachel, Kate, Tala, Lauren, Maia, Matt, Jordan, Ian, Riann, Jack, Cameron (x2!), Varsha, Claire, Liam, Keenan, Mason, Ben, Molly, Lars, Josie, Dan, Elsa, Marcela, Chloe, Zoe, Nico, Hunter, Graham, Parker, Bayle, Gabe, Alec, Evan, Joe, Beppe, Anna, Andrea & everyone else!

And to each and every person on this page- Thank YOU for supporting this and believing in my dream.

Risks and challenges

Risk: This is my first Kickstarter campaign and I am new to the world of product design.
Mitigation: Luckily I am surrounded by some incredible mentors in my life, many of whom have successfully run Kickstarter campaign's in the past. I've spent the last 6 months reading about every blog post and advice article out there and building up relationships with my manufacturer and facilities. I'm dedicated to this project, and dedicated to getting it to you!
