Finding an innovative solution to one of the most harmful forms of ocean plastic, the Ocean Collection prevents discarded fishing nets from entering the ocean through the creation of premium eyewear. The collection contains three unique frame designs with a modern take on a classic look.
We started Bureo to protect a place we love, the Ocean. Through the tremendous support we received on Kickstarter just over a year ago, we successfully launched ‘the Minnow’, the first skateboard made from recycled fishing nets. Overwhelmed by a global outpouring of encouragement and support for our mission, we have continued the expansion of our recycling program, collecting 20,000 kg of fishing nets to date.
We are excited to announce a new collaboration with our friends at Karün Eyewear in Chile, a progressive company focused on producing the best quality eyewear from natural and noble materials. We set out to make the 'Ocean Collection', first sunglasses made from recycled fishing nets collected along the coast of Chile.
The Ocean Collection offers three models made entirely from Bureo’s Net+Positiva plastic, an incredibly unique, fully traceable 100% recycled and recyclable nylon fishing net material. Designed based on Karün's design philosophy, and inspired from the native whale species off the coast, the glasses are complete with premium Carl Zeiss Polarized lenses. Designed and sourced in Chile, all frames are made in Italy.
Each style includes your choice of premium Carl Zeiss CR-39 lenses, which are polarized, scratch resistant and completed with an anti-reflective coating. In addition, CR-39 lenses are light weight and offer superior impact resistance.
Everyone has their own taste in sunglasses, but we recommend The Yuco for small to medium faces, The Newen for medium to large faces, and The Kayu for small faces.
We are offering the Ocean Collection at an exclusive Kickstarter price of $99 for premium polarized lenses (market comparable at $140-180), with a planned retail price of $129 later this year. Our reward levels also allow for additional savings when you combine orders with friends and family!
Each reward level includes your choice of frames and lenses. We’ll send out a survey for your model choice (Yuco, Newen, Kayu) and lens choice (Amber or Grey) following the campaign.
Through your purchase of frames, you are preventing harmful discarded fishing nets from entering our oceans while funding programs to empower coastal communities. Funds from this purchase are used for better resources and education for low-income fishing communities most affected by these forms of waste.
Bureo's Net Positiva program prevents harmful fishnets from entering the environment, a material that makes up 10% of the oceans’ plastic pollution, while sourcing durable raw materials. Fishing communities are given the opportunity to take an active role in keeping their environment clean and now understand the impact of their fishnet materials if mismanaged. Net+Positiva provides incentives in the form of compensation to local contracted workers and a commodity price for every kilogram of net collected.
Each model in the Ocean Collection was inspired from the native whale species off the coast of Patagonia, Chile. The frames are a reflection of the whale's co-existance in their habitat; their constant movement through the ocean and how the warm and cold currents meet to proliferate sea life. Designed for a spectrum of face shapes, the Ocean Collection offers three styles, The Yuco, The Newen, and The Kayu introduced below.
The Yuco is inspired by the Minke Whale which inhabits the depths of our ocean. Characterized by a short extension, the side of the frames follows the whales morphology through the small scale and shape. Derived from the Mapudungun name for ‘sharp’, Yuco represents the Minke whales’ sharp features.
The Newen design is influenced by the native Fin Whale, found in the depths of the Chilean ocean. Displaying speed and size, the Fin Whale’s morphology is found in the design of the Newen. Named after the Mapudungun word for ‘strength’ and energy, the Newen is characterized by greater coverage and a strong frame.
Kayu’s design is inspired by the Right Whale, a cetacean that lives deep in our Chilean ocean. The Right Whale is defined by a heavy mass through the center of the body, which is translated into the lens shape of the Kayu style. Referencing prominent growths on the whales bodies, the name Kayu was selected as an analogy to the key feature of the Right Whales.
Bureo was founded through a group of friends’ deep connection with the ocean environment and an awareness of the threats to our waterways. We are on a mission to create innovative solutions to positively impact the environment, inspire future generations and initiate social change. Launching our 'Push For Tomorrow' campaign, we are rallying younger generations to become a part of the solution by living sustainable lifestyles, supporting local cleanup and recycling efforts and bringing awareness to the threats facing our natural playgrounds. Bureo is a participating venture of Patagonia's internal fund focused on supporting likeminded start-up companies having a positive impact on the environment.

With sunglass designs complete and prototypes constructed, we are now prepared to launch the first production run of glasses with your support. Our funding need of $30,000 will facilitate our final production setup costs, the recycling cost for several tons of fishnets, and delivery of the final sunglasses. In order to have an impact we have decided to offer the highest quality eyewear at an affordable price point, which we have achieved by offering the first glasses directly to you. We know you will be satisfied with the quality and performance of the glasses, and be proud to wear and we are excited to share our story with you!
Risks and challenges
Thanks to the tremendous support provided by our industry partners and advisors, we believe we have done everything we can to mitigate the remaining risks and challenges for this project. We have taken our production setup and prototypes as far as feasibly possible, and we are reaching out to the Kickstarter community now to fund our first major production run.
As with any recycling project, a consistent supply of materials is a minimum requirement. We have collected several tons of fishing nets, which have been personally prepared for recycling on the ground in Chile. The nets are now ready to go at our recycling and manufacturing facility in Santiago for our first large production run.
We have contracted one of Italy's leading sunglass production teams, to manufacture our products. We have completed the fabrication of our injection mold plates require for production. We have manufactured and worn several prototypes, which have been tested for performance. We acknowledge that achieving consistent performance between recycled products is a challenge and risks remain in any manufacturing operation. However, we consider these low risks given the extensive testing we have completed and the industry knowledge of our selected manufacturer.
To achieve our proposed Kickstarter schedule, we are reliant on the timely shipping and processing of our product from Italy to Los Angeles. We have secured trusted industry partners to handle this process, and we will be doing everything possible to meet our proposed timeline. We are excited about delivering our first products to our Kickstarter backers, and we will be completely engaged with our supporters during this process. Any updates will be relayed in a timely manner, and we are open to any feedback or questions that arise along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
