Make the damn game guys! What a loss...

It's just curious and ironic at the same time that The Dark Triad is about to enter the TOP 100 in Greenlight...
What could have happened if only we had found some budget to continue developing the game and to make some marketing? I truly believe we could have been in the TOP 50 maybe. i think then it would have been easier to find some investor or publisher (I think now it's a necessary evil if one can't fund the game through crowdfunding).
Can you imagine that? what would happen if next year we happen to be in the TOP50? Or eventually have the chance to be published on Steam when the game development has been cancelled due to lack of funds? I don't know if this can be possible. I though it was not possible either to enter the TOP100 and we are at just one step...
What would you do if you were in our position?
And last. I don't think TDT will ever see the light of day. Even if we miraculously received the necessary budget, the team was working remotely, and if you want to make a good crpg, you need to be on the same physical location. Besides there would be many other issues to be addressed. Some day I'll write a postmortem so you can know what went wrong during the development. As a personal note, I'll use my spare time to learn more about storytelling and of Articy: Draft 2, it looks like an awesome tool! I also plan to continue developing some crpg plots and dialogues. But I won't rush anything... maybe in 10 years we release the game by surprise as happened with Inquisitor! just joking =P
About the future of TDT, I talked to Miguel and JM to release the code we developed before cancelling the project by using a Creative Commons Licence, so it can be available to the public. I don't want this project to die forsaken on a dirty drawer. That's why everybody will have access to the 3D Isometric editor that we made, the model importer and also a compiler to test their maps and move the group around, even to try some very basic and ugly turn-based combat. We will also make the code available for if anyone wants to modify/create or continue developing the game on his own, or create another type of game, with the condition that any new change or addition in the code will be freely available for the community to use for their own projects. If anyone made a game using part of our code, we won't ask for royalties.
BUT it's important to notice we won't provide any technical support. Even this, we'll try to document the code a bit so anyone knows what classes, methods, etc, do. We plan to release this to the public in March-June.
Hi Kahuna. If you followed the latest updates, we cancelled the development of TDT. With our scarce resources, we would have needed 8 more months to show a good gameplay video on a new KS relaunch. So the team has been dismantled even we are in touch to each other. I must also add a last thing: Miguel and me ended up financially broken. We burned our personal savings and we've been struggling to find work to cover our basic living needs. We must pay the last months of Rafater, the 2D graphic artist, and David Lucena, one of the coders. Also we must refund all the backers that supported us on our official site and on indiegogo ($1000 in total for both sites). I will start working the next 4 November on a social videogames company, so Miguel and me will give your money back as soon I we can start saving some coins. I reckon by January everybody will have been paid. I ask for your pardon and apologize for this silence, but things have been really though these months.
Are you ever going to relaunch???
I'm with Alex, Please continue to update.
Good luck! I'm still ready to back you when you come back.
My wallet likes this decision, but I'm sad to see this project's Kickstarter end. I am glad that you guys are planning to relaunch it though!
Tiny little concern here. In the picture we've seen of the body lying on the floor with the severed hand beside it .... it's the wrong hand. Unless the poor man was some kind of mutant with two left hands, that is :p. Is there any possibility that could be changed/corrected? Probably not but it's been bugging me for weeks now. I know, I know. I'm just being fussy and finnicky. But I just thought I'd mention it.
At the moment we've set up a couple of surveys on our forums, we would be grateful if you give us your feedback! We will keep posting more surveys addressed to the backers in the coming days, many thanks for your suggestion MikeHumphreys! =)
@The Dark Triad
I'd suggest setting up a survey for backers to get ideas on what they'd like to see you add to make the campaign even stronger for the May 6th relaunch.
You can use SurveyMonkey.com or if your site is hosted by a Cpanel Fantastico-based package, there's a free survey program that is a one-click install to use.
I strongly suggest including at least one open-ended essay style question where backers can share in their own words any ideas that they may have. It's a bit more work to compile and read through but I promise you that you will find some GREAT ideas that you'll want to implement.
OK, cool :).
@Devean, in such case, if you want something extra from our new KS campaign tiers just let me know =) We'll try to have an add-ons page ready for that!
Sure, this time we'll work on add-ons and announce stretch goals sooner.
We didn't expect to have so many headaches adding new rewards to a tier. Actually you can't if at least there's one backer that has already pledged. That was bad for newcomers as if they checked the tiers at the right, they would not see the new rewards we had included on the updates.
MikeHumphreys made some great suggestions. I would just like to add : dont' use black and red colors for the project's picture. As dumb as it may sound, more warm and saturated, "positive" colors catch the eye better and do better effect.
Thanks for the great piece of advice guys, we'll sure do it much better next time! =)
@The Dark Triad:
Last but not least, put together a marketing & PR plan. You need to have 6 week plan (minimum) for interviews, PR, marketing, etc. to promote your Kickstarter.
If budget permits, hire a pro.
If budget doesn't permit, then look at what the mega-successful Kickstarters did and model what they did. Contact the sites that they did interviews with... hit the same PR sites... same style updates on the game... etc etc.
I want you guys to succeed (so do many who don't even know of this project yet), and one way or another it WILL succeed. I could name you 3-4 old school RPGs that failed their first kickstarter but even reached stretch goals with their second attempt. Don't give up on these sites. And I do think it would be great to have the American version instead. That was a very good tip. I'm sure there's someone who can help out with getting that done. Wish you guys all the luck in the world.
Sorry to hear you're cancelling this Kickstarter but I'm glad to hear you're not giving up.
Some marketing/PR pointers for your next effort:
1. If possible, run it through Kickstarter regular instead of Kickstarter UK so the pledge amounts are in dollars, not pounds. Many potential backers who aren't Brits may be confused with the currency conversion (I wasn't because I deal with it at times with my marketing business).
2. If it has to be a Kickstarter UK campaign, then make the pledges amounts in dollars more visible at the beginning of each pledge tier. Bolding is possible... otherwise use something like (this) or ** this ** to note that 13 pounds is about $19.6 dollars.
3. Backers get excited about stretch goals so tell us a few of them early on. Give people incentives to pledge higher amounts. You can look at any Kickstarter campaign that did well on kicktraq.com and see the average pledge amounts.
4. Offer a link to your own website instead of Facebook. On your website, have a place where people can pledge via PayPal.
5. Have a list of add-ons that you can offer once you hit the minimum funding goal. I'd look at what some of the big-name games like Mass Effect 3 or XCom have done for pre-launch add-on bonuses... I thinking things like a special intermediate level armour or weapon set would be great add-on options.
6. Take some time and study what the mega-successful Kickstarter campaigns like Wasteland 2, Torment, Project Eternity have done. Look at how they've structured their salesletters... the order they presented things... the clarity of their marketing/sales video. Model your next campaign using their successful blueprint.
Hope that helps,
Maybe Jog, but if you have spent money on both projects, you an average backer would reconsider pledging on a game with a less scope as ours within the same month, but that's not the only reason why the pledges have slowed down of course.
I also think that Torment and SotA should actually bring in more roleplayers than usual.
Kickstarter UK might be an obstacle; folks in the US aren't as used to converting currencies as we Europeans (still) are, and having to search for your credit card gives you time to reconsider, while it's all convenient and easy with Amazon.
If somebody from inXile or Obsidian reads this, let us know! =D
I don't think this will be possible Jakub. We know that not having the tiers in $ may affect potential backers in deciding to support us, but unless somebody worth of trust could give us a hand on managing this, the next KS campaig will be in £ too.
Also, what if I jump on the bandwagon now through Indiegogo, and then decide I want something extra from the next Kickstarter?
(I assume the KS will have $1 tier to just join for the comments :) ).
Read the update: So the next KS will be a USD one with Amazon payments?
OTOH, if not for Torment, I would never learn about this project. And $20 is not that high for entry level.
Hm, this project has come to KS at the wrong time. Most RPG fans are backing Torment and/or Shroud right now and don't have money left for Dragon's Death I suppose.... :/
Thanks to Cornelius over at the Torment ks for giving me the heads up. Looks like a great project, and hopefully I can increase my pledge a bit in the future. In the meantime, I'll try to spread the word about as much as possible. Good luck guys!
Didn't notice this one till RPS did their Kickstarter Katchup review. Glad noticed it though and backing too now seems like cross between the isometic style of BG crossed with Eschalon and Banner Saga. I hope gets funded and look forward to playing it when comes out. :)
And I'm in. I would've backed earlier but I didn't notice the project go live. It was the fact that it's turn based that sold me. Please don't change that :).
@MIke Kahuna actually made it available just for that purpose.
The game looks great! :)
@Edgardo, I hope you don't mind but I swiped your Dark Triad Backer graphic until they come up with some official ones. Hopefully it helps get some more backers behind this game.
Just joined as a backer a little earlier today.
Are there any backer graphics available that we can use as profile photos to help promote Dark Triad?
What caught my eye was the customization of the sub-plots and side-quests mentioned in update #3. A really interesting idea that makes the story seem much more personal in a sense.
The one thing I'm hesitant about is that there's only three party members, and from the looks of it, they've got predetermined classes? That makes choosing your own class more annoying from a gameplay perspective. It would be interesting if you could customize what class the other members in the party are as well, at least to some degree.
@Riggo lol, well hopefully I'll find a few more people who blame me for being here.
I would like to blame Edgardo for my presence here!!! It is all his fault!!!
Thanks KahunazKevin, I'll use the icon to see if it draws more attention to this game.
< I made a Dark Triad user icon. Feel free to snag it and use it yourself. Let's get this game going viral and get it ported to other OS.
The video works well for me...
I can see the story videos and the others down the page, but the pitch video is just a picture.
hi Edgardo, can't you see the main video?
BTW, what happenned to the KS video? is it being red0ne?
I really like what I see from this KS, it is definitely the kind of game I like to play. I hope this KS is a success but it needs more promotion. Good luck!
I went to vote at Greenlight (I rarely use Steam) and found out that I had already voted for this one like two weeks ago. This game must have something I like! I hope it gets funded!
The game definitely looks promising. I'm looking forward to it :)
I might say that the logo on the video was working better?
