Update on Ayn Rand documentary

Dear Ayn Rand supporters,
Once again, thank you for your support of “The Most Dangerous Woman In America” (formerly: “Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand”). Some of you have recently wrote in asking how the documentary is progressing, so I wanted to give you an update:

We are currently editing video and audio footage to test the basic structure and “flow” of the documentary. Once this is evaluated, the script will be refined and decisions will be made regarding new filming as well as the acquisition of additional 3rd party footage.

As most of you know, the project experienced a multi-year delay while I wrote film scripts and consulted for the “Atlas Shrugged” motion picture series. My regular, “bread and butter” work had also been delayed, and I made the decision to focus on that during 2015. Happily though, we have finished the doc’s basic script recently and, because we continued to acquire more great Ayn Rand archival video/audio material during the production delay, we are now incorporating that material into the rough cut.

Thank you for your continued patience. I’m sure you will find the finished film was well worth the wait!

Best regards,

Duncan Scott

"Dangerous Woman" update

Dear Kickstarter Supporters,

Here’s a new update on our documentary, The Most Dangerous Woman in America (previously titled Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand): We resumed work on Dangerous Woman several months ago (following the completion of my work on Atlas Shrugged, Part 3). The main focus has been finalizing the shooting script for the documentary. As you can imagine, since we are presenting the spectrum of Ayn Rand’s ideas, and the controversy those ideas generate, it’s been a massive undertaking, but we recently completed a 94 page draft and are now revising and tweaking it.

Although video editing usually doesn’t begin until after principal photography, we have already started editing segments of the documentary. Because we previously filmed, or acquired, over 40 hours of footage and thousands of still photos for the project, we recently began assembling selected sequences, mainly to test concepts and techniques.

When the script is finalized, and the remaining production funds are in hand, we will begin filming the new sequences. It is full steam ahead at this point!

I’ve been very grateful for your patience during the long delays on this project. Almost all of my work in recent years has been devoted to finding compelling ways to adapt Ayn Rand’s ideas for mass media with the goal of bringing those ideas to a wider public. And that was certainly my goal in working many months on the scripts for Atlas Shrugged, Parts 2 and 3.

The Atlas Shrugged films did result in a two year delay in our Dangerous Woman documentary, and so I believe you should be made aware that, just prior to principal photography of Atlas Shrugged Part 3 this past January, I decided that I could no longer support the production in the direction it was headed due to creative differences with the producers. I resigned from the production team at that time. I can’t go into more detail because of confidentiality agreements.

Returning to Dangerous Woman though has completely energized me. I’m excited to see the film taking shape as an entertaining, accessible and faithful examination of Rand’s ideas. Look for another progress report in a few months.

Thank you again for your support and encouragement.

 All the best,

 Duncan Scott

News About Your Ayn Rand Documentary

Dear Ayn Rand Documentary Supporters and Friends,

I just wanted to touch base with you and give you a long-overdue update on the status of our documentary film project, Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand (“IMAR”).

The documentary continues on temporary hold status while I work on the “Atlas Shrugged” movie series. I was co-screenwriter and consultant on Atlas Shrugged, Part Two (released in Oct, 2012) and I am the primary screenwriter and consultant of Atlas Shrugged, Part Three (projected for release in 2014).

I’m happy to report that a lot of time is being invested into the Part Three script and the producers have voiced their commitment to staying focused on the important themes of the novel. The Part One and Part Two films, already released, have inspired thousands of people to read Rand’s books and learn more about her ideas—exactly the same goal we have for our documentary.

Once principal filming on Part 3 wraps up, we will resume full time work on the documentary. In the meantime, there have been some great new developments with the documentary that I’d like to share with you. Over the past year and a half, I’ve had many discussions about how to introduce Rand's ideas to new audiences and not just preach to the choir. We’ve arrived at new insights that not only apply to the Atlas Shrugged films but to our documentary as well. In recent months we have revamped the overall concept of Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand moving it away from a PBS style scholarly review of Rand’s philosophy (that might only be watched by Rand fans) to something that is much more provocative.

Rand’s ideas are enormously threatening to proponents of big government. She gives her critics nightmares, from the President of the United States, to the New York Times, to countless left-wing bloggers hiding behind their screen names. They say she’s hateful and pitiless…the leader of a cult… a menace to society… In fact, some of her enemies, have called Ayn Rand “The Most Dangerous Woman in America”. We decided to take that charge as a badge of honor. Our documentary disarms her critics by tackling their arguments head-on, using them as a platform to refute their assertions one by one. This technique peels away the misrepresentation to reveal the surprisingly uncomplicated essentials of her philosophy. I’m pleased to announce that we have renamed our documentary…

The Most Dangerous Woman in America.

We think this new approach will draw a broad general audience -- even some who think they hate Ayn Rand! Please go to the link below to see our new promotional trailer:

On behalf of our producing partner, The Moving Picture Institute, co-Producer Dathan Liblik, Associate Producers, Tiffany Pransky and Matt Wood, and Marketing Director Scott DeSapio, I thank you for your continued patience and support.

All the best,

Duncan Scott

P.S. Because it is a completed funding project, the Kickstarter site will continue to show Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand as the title.

A Great Year for the Ideas of Ayn Rand!

Dear Kickstarter Donor,

It’s been quite a while since I’ve updated you on “Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand” (IMAR), and if you’ve been wondering if something was going on, you’re right--exciting things!:

As you know, the goal of IMAR is to bring Rand’s extraordinary ideas to a wider public audience. This is also the goal of the movie version of Rand’s novel, “Atlas Shrugged.” The first part of the trilogy was released last year and, as was just announced, Part Two is going into production and is slated for release in the Fall of 2012!

I am very pleased to tell you that I have officially joined the production team of “Atlas Shrugged, Part 2”! My job will be working to help ensure that Rand’s ideas are presented in a dramatic, cinematic and compelling manner. Specifically, the producers commissioned me to draft a screenplay that brings out the crucial themes of Rand’s novel. I have been working on the screenplay for several weeks and I’m happy to report that it will be completed soon. In addition, during the course of production and editing of the film, I will continue in an on-going role that might best be described as creative advisor, although details are still being worked out.

As you can imagine, I’m thrilled to be working on a second project that parallels the goals of “Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand”: to spread the ideas of Ayn Rand, especially at this critical time in our nation’s history.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, my work on the “Atlas Shrugged, Part 2” will delay completion of our documentary. While that does mean waiting longer to see IMAR, new opportunities have opened up for promotion, visibility, financing and other ongoing support that is essential to completing the film. With each release of the Atlas Shrugged trilogy, curiosity about Rand’s ideas is sure to grow. IMAR will be a more detailed and systematic non-fiction examination of the ideas presented in dramatic form in “Atlas”.

Please keep in mind that all first-phase pre-production of “Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand” has been completed. This is the part of this production that you made possible with your Kickstarter donations. Your support helped launch the first film project to present Ayn Rand’s ideas with both an independent and comprehensive approach.

All Kickstarter rewards have been shipped (other than rewards that must wait for the completion of the IMAR film, of course). The single exception is T-shirts. After long negotiations, we were unable to license the key art we planned to use on the shirts. We are already going forward on a new design and look forward to sending out the shirts in the near future.

I thank you once again for believing in what we are doing. I hope you share my excitement that there is now a second way to bring Rand’s ideas to a wide audience--one that that could potentially number in the millions.

“Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand” will move forward to completion as soon as humanly possible. I will continue to keep you updated. Film-making can be a marathon--often a grueling and harrowing one, and I’m honored to have your support through to the finish!

Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand

Dear Kickstarter Donors,

A lot has happened since the Kickstarter campaign for Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand ended on May 10th, and I wanted to bring you the latest news!

Writing of the “treatment” for the documentary has progressed significantly over the past several weeks and is now approximately 60% completed.  The treatment describes, in detail, the creative approach for each component of the film and is essentially the blueprint for the film, and the basis of the final shooting script.

For Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand we started with Rand’s own assessment of what is essential about her philosophy.  She was once challenged to describe Objectivism while standing on one foot and she easily did so by identifying its four major components:

Metaphysics - Objective Reality

Epistemology - Reason

Ethics - Self-interest

Politics - Capitalism

Given our subject matter, the biggest challenge of writing a treatment such as this is finding the most effective way to showcase these four key concepts in a cinematic way--with clarity and depth--and to also seamlessly blend in the epic story of Rand’s life and times.   The intent is to delve deep inside Rand’s mind and communicate her ideas in an accessible and engaging manner. Our goal is to inspire a mainstream audience that tends to be resistant or indifferent to the importance of philosophy in general, and perhaps Rand’s ideas in particular. At the same time we are making sure that the treatment powerfully demonstrates the relevance of her ideas to the disturbing problems facing the world today.

Ambitious goals, but we are putting together a talented team that can meet the challenge!

We have been pulling together the key team members for the upcoming production.  This includes co-producers, associate producers, co-writers, videographers, video editors, graphic artists, animators, and so much more.  We’re taking special care that each new member is not only exceptionally talented but, wherever feasible, shares our passion for the subject matter.

Additionally, we have approached a politically sympathetic film star about providing the voice-over for our film, and will keep you updated as more key talent joins our team.

In the past two months we have acquired over 1200 historic still photos and an additional 16 hours of archival film and video.  This is in addition to well over 40 hours of material we already had before we launched our Kickstarter campaign.

Once the film is edited together with newly filmed segments, this rich treasure chest of material will provide deeper visual context and background.  We anticipate that by early August we will have sufficient archival footage to begin assembling some sections of the film that are particularly biographical or historical in nature. (Special thanks to those of you who made additional media recommendations!)

We continue to seek the additional funding that will allow us to see this documentary to completion.  We continue to encourage donations and, in recent weeks we have focused our efforts on individuals and organizations that are potential investors in the film. We are thrilled to have the support of the Moving Picture Institute in our fundraising efforts.  New promotional materials were created in late June, and in the coming weeks look for expanded use of our web page,, our Facebook page, and other social network outlets.

We encourage you to contact us if you know of any person, or any organization, that shares our passion for Ayn Rand’s ideas and might consider donating or investing in this vitally important film endeavor.

We are happy to tell you that some Kickstarter donor awards will be shipping in early August.  The DVDs of We the Living, Objectivist History Project Part 1 and  Objectivist History Project Part 2 are standing by.  The brand new Objectivist History Project Part 3 is at the manufacturer’s and we expect to receive the first shipment within a few weeks.  All these DVDs will be shipped together in August.  The original We the Living poster will also be shipped in August.

We are in the process of licensing the graphic image that will be used in much of our promotion, including the donor award t-shirts, which will be shipped at a later date.

Most of the other donor awards will be available after the completion of Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand.

On behalf of everyone involved with Inside the Mind of Ayn Rand, thank you again for your generous support and your messages of encouragement.  We look forward to updating you with all the details as we move deeper into the production.

All the best,

Duncan Scott
